The Height of Arrogance! We will NOT be back!
Submitted Tuesday, August 11, 2015 - 4:21pm [Dine in]

We were so happy to find this place, the decor is cute, like in France — the waiters all dressed the part and they were even French. However, everything stopped being cute as soon as we started to (or should I say, tried to) interact with any of the arrogant waiters.

We sat at the bar and ordered drinks and some pomme frites. At one point the bartender made some drinks right in front of us and I tried to talk to him and he just contradicted what I said — I said, "wow, so close you can almost taste the drink" (the bar was super narrow, so he literally was right where we were) and he said "ah, maybe smell them". No biggy I thought, then I asked him something in French (I lived in France when I was younger, so I speak some French) and of course he immediately answered me in English.

Then when my partner accidentally knocked over his champagne glass (because the bartender had left all of his drink mix stuff right in front of us), he merely came over and said "would you like to order another drink?" Not, oh darn, can I get you another drink or anything.

I also heard the waiters talking and whenever a customer came in and wanted to sit in the window (like we did), they said "no, we have to save it for a table of 4" - but then some wanna-be big shot guy came in with his girlfriend, they let him sit there, even though they didn't know him either.

Anyway, we were very unhappy with the service and or civility with this restaurant. For sure we will not be returning.

NOT Vegan-Friendly, even if they say they are...
Submitted Monday, December 29, 2014 - 9:14am [Dine in]

After eating here a few times and thinking it was really good, I was informed by our waitress (who was vegetarian and very nice) that in fact, their roasted potatoes, which we loved, we NOT vegan-friendly — even though we had been assured the times before that EVERYTHING we had order used no animal products at all. I think because the waitress was vegetarian she took our request more seriously and found out that the potatoes are cooked in chicken stock. So long Apollonia, it was nice knowing you :-(

Still Not Great — At least not consistently
Submitted Sunday, April 6, 2014 - 10:21am [Dine in]

We have eaten here a few times over the last several weeks and unfortunately the food is just not consistent. Today we waited almost 45 minutes for our food—and there were only 4 tables in the restaurant—and then when it came out, wow, was it under-whelming. The sandwiches had barely any ingredients on them. I have to say that both of our sandwiches were maybe two of the worst sandwiches we have ever had, which might not be so bad if the sandwiches weren't $13.95 each. Another unfortunate thing is that no one came by to ask how our food was until they saw me holding up our visa card so that we could pay :-(

Too bad, but I don't think we will be going here anymore. But then again, they likely won't even notice, as they never even seem to recognize us when we go in anyway, even though we had been there so often lately.

Really Good Burgers!!!!!
Submitted Tuesday, May 21, 2013 - 9:15am [Dine in]

We ordered two burgers, the "No Bull" burger and the "Barbecued Tempeh Burger". We also order the fries. I would recommend both burgers to anyone, whether vegan, vegetarian or a carnivore. They were delicious. Personally, we both preferred the tempeh burger, but the no-bull burger was also really good and apparently the most popular. I also like the fries—sure they may not be as the best French fries you have ever had, but they are not deep fried, instead they are baked, but I still found them to be very good.

The price was also reasonable. We had 2 burgers and 2 orders of fries it it was about $20. We will definitely be back...soon!

Nothing Good Here - Move On!
Submitted Monday, February 18, 2013 - 9:01am [Dine in]

Five of us went to eat here the other night and we were all so surprised at the lack of flavor and seasoning in almost every single dish. The gyozas were boring, boring, boring. They were gummy little pockets of dough with flavorless filling (both the shittake mushroom ones and the lamb ones). We also had several other appetizers and main courses and they were all pretty flavorless. Seriously, we had more flavorful Asian food at almost every food fair in a mall. Generally, Asian food is anything but boring and flavorless. The only that was remotely "okay" was the Kung Pao, but I think that was partly due to the fact that it just had a little bit of flavor. I would certainly not order it again. Actually, we will not go back for sure.

This was our second time here, the first time was several years ago and we couldn't remember why we hadn't been back. Ah, I guess we remember now! It wasn't very good—end of Story. On top of that, the place was dead, yet we couldn't get a reservation until 7:30 p.m or 9:00 pm - say what? Guys, you have not tables to serve.

On top of the bad food, the service was not much better. Actually, to be fair, it started out pretty good. But then we very politely mentioned that seasoning was lacking in most of the dishes that we had tried so far and that was pretty much the last we saw of our waitress. We couldn't eve get a glass of water after that. We had to actually call over another waitress to order our second bottle of wine.

Therefore, due to the bad food + bad service + bad atmosphere, we give this a making of poor!

Never Disappoints!!! So GOOD!
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2012 - 1:59pm [Dine in]

The food is so good here that we now eat here once a week (sometimes twice). We eat the vegetarian platter with the mushroom dish and it is outstanding! We have brought many people here since we found this gem and they all say how delicious it is.

And besides the food being fantastic, the service and warmth from the family that own and operate the restaurant is hard to find these days.

Thank you for existing Axum!!!

Really really good!!! And they had Vegan options as well.
Submitted Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - 6:31pm [Dine in]

The food was very good as was the service. They also had a separate vegan menu. Even if you are or or not vegan the vegan selections had a ton of flavor and texture. I would definitely order from the vegan menu again. We had the asparagus and sunchokes and another dish that was with artichokes and tomatoes...both had amazing flavor. In fact, the asparagus was so good that we ordered another one.

The room was also very nice and the service from our waiter David was excellent.

Our only complaint (from all of us at the table) was that the seats make your legs sweat—weird, I know, but we all commented on it at the end of the meal. With that said, we will still definitely be back!!! Thanks.

We gave it a second chance...we WON'T give it a third :-(
Submitted Tuesday, November 20, 2012 - 12:00pm [Dine in]

I am so sad to say that the whip was just as we remembered it about 4 or 5 years ago. We decided after all this time that we should give it another try, so 3 of us went for dinner. First impression, nice enough room...then they handed us the menus - I am pretty sure that they were not meant to be scratch and sniff menus. The menus were all wrinkled and super dirty, but we thought "don't judge yet", so we moved on. Two of us order veggie burgers as well as the arugula and fig salad. Let's start with the burger. It was terrible. The bun was so hard that the roof of my mouth is all cut up - awesome! And because we asked for no mayo, we just got a dry bun. But that is not the worst part, the worst part is that the burger itself was void of any flavor or seasoning. It was really one of the MOST boring veggie burgers I have ever had. I take a store bought veggie burger over theirs any day. Okay the salad...holy ginger Bateman! There was so much ginger in the dressing that it actually burned our tongues. There was also so much dressing that you could hear the arugula drowning. And then the figs...imagine big chunks of super sweet dried figs in your salad...no thanks! We all started picking out the figs and pushing them to the side. In the end, no one asked us how our meal was so we never got a chance to give them any feedback.

Too bad, we were looking for another local hang out, but this will most certainly NOT be it.

We Will Definitely NOT Be Back!
Submitted Tuesday, November 13, 2012 - 3:48pm [Dine in]

We have been wanting to try this restaurant for sometime now, so 5 of us went there last night for dinner. I cannot tell you how disappointed we all were. Each and every dish was just not that good. I have had better Indian food at a food fair before.

Besides the food being really not that good, the decor was really run down. Even though the restaurant was not that busy, we were stuck in the corner at this old very lopsided table. I actually thought that the food was going to roll off onto my lap. Then right beside us was this huge hot serving cart that just had a big table cloth over it. And then when we looked up there the a large chunk of plaster on the balcony was all dirty and damaged.

I think that a few years ago this restaurant may have been nice inside but it looks like they haven't spent a dime on up keep. Everything just looks like it is kind of old and tired. Even the menus were dirty and the paper was all wrinkled and had food marks on them. Oh ya, that reminds me, on their menu they have an appetizer that says "Voted best appetizer 2009" right under the dish...ah, that was like 4 years ago people. After last nights experience, I think 4 years is a long time for this particular restaurant.

Sadly, we will not be back.

We Will Definitely Be Back!
Submitted Monday, November 5, 2012 - 2:50pm [Dine in]

Four of us ate here the other night and it was delicious. Two of us are vegan and the restaurant was very helpful and accommodating. The food had good complex flavors and it was a big hit with all of us. We will definitely eat here again. We had the eggplant bharta, chickpea masala, roti, some delicious cauliflower potato dish and a few appies. Our friends also had the butter chicken and a couple of other dishes and they also really enjoyed their dishes. The owner who came over to our table was also SUPER nice! Thanks!

Really Not Great
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2012 - 3:26pm [Dine in]

I am sorry to say that we really did not enjoy this place. I feel bad though, as the people there were very nice. We really wanted to like it but it was just a bunch of fake meat products and a bunch of gummy sauces. If you like that sort of stuff, then you will really like this place as the flavours were not too bad. But this just does not seem like real food to us. There were 3 of us and unfortunately, we all said we would never go back. Not even for one of the 6 dishes that we tried. And one other note, if you are going to go here, be sure you have plenty of time because each dish comes out one at a time. It took us almost 2 hours to eat. But again, they were at least friendly.

The BEST SERVICE - Above and Beyond Good
Submitted Monday, July 2, 2012 - 3:28pm [Dine in]

This weekend we decided to check out el Camino. Every single one of us (there were 6 of us) would go back and will go back. "Meg's" (short for Meghan, but she said "call me Meg's), was THE BEST SERVER!! She went out of her way to make sure we were happy, well fed and always had a delicious margarita in front of us. She even bought our whole table a round of delicious shooters. She made our night. The bartender was also very nice and seemed genuinely happy to be there. Thanks El Camino for a stellar night, we will most definitely be back!

Really Delicious Food and Even Good Service. Yeah!
Submitted Monday, May 21, 2012 - 9:50am [Dine in]

We used to go to The Naam a long time ago. In fact, we were not even vegetarian but the food was pretty good. The service however was not always so great. Fast forward to 2012 and we are currently no eating any meat or dairy so there are not as many restaurants to choose from that offer more than one thing. So we decided to go The Naam yesterday for an early dinner. Wowow!!!! so glad that we did. The food was it's usual good food. In fact, The sesame fries and miso gravy was better than I remember and the naam bread with veggie buter...yum yum yum!! We also had the Naam salad and the Thai noodles. The noodles were maybe a bit overloaded with tofu but I am sure tofu lovers would not complain. Next time I would just ask for no tofu.

But the best part of the dinner was the nice friendly service. Thanks Michael for helping to break the bad reputation that The Naam has for less than good service. Michael was friendly, efficient and really made sure that everyone in our section was happy and had everything that they needed. He was workin' his butt off :-)

Will definitely be frequenting The Naam once again. Cheers!!!!

Really Good Food and Even Better Service
Submitted Thursday, May 10, 2012 - 1:07pm [Dine in]

I am new to eating a more vegan or plant-based diet, which means that my choices for going out for dinner have changed significantly. Once you cut out things like meat or even cheese for that matter you realize the world of eating out is not at all geared towards you. In fact, you might be lucky if there is even one thing on the menu you can eat. So recently I have been trying out a few local vegetarian restaurants and the main thing that we have noticed is that the service is always not that great. For instance, the foundation makes pretty good food but their idea of service is "here's the table, here's your food (usually on a severely chipped plate)...here's where you pay" - end of story. Same goes for the Naam but that's nothing new.

This leads me to my experience today at Bandidas. Today six of us went for lunch there and not only was the food very good but the service was exceptional. Our waitress "kir" (not sure of spelling) was really nice and friendly. She also made it very clear that they could make anything vegan if needed, she made sure we didn't need anything before and after we got our food, which came super fast btw. I would totally recommend this place to anyone. Thanks Bandidas, I'll be back for sure!

Great Beer and Service...Food Not Bad
Submitted Monday, March 26, 2012 - 5:36pm [Dine in]

Good room and great service/beer, but the food is not that great. It's okay but certainly not great or even really good. The chicken and biscuits was just some shredded chicken bits and again it was not super warm. The seasoning was also totally void and no one came to ask us if it was good (nor did we get the opportunity to offer or feedback) on the meal overall. Also, for the type of food and the fact that I think it's just reheated, it is sort of expensive. The dessert however was really good. It was not described to us as something that would even be tasty and apparently the staff was 50/50 on the dessert themselves but we said what the heck. Turns out it was way better than it was described. It was like a banana cream pie panna cotta.

Worth EVERY Penny!!!!!!!!
Submitted Monday, July 18, 2011 - 3:26pm [Dine in]

Wow!!! Finally somewhere to restore my faith in restaurants. Of course it's from the people who have La Regalade in West Van (which is also fantastic). Six of us went to Cafe Regalade on the weekend and all 6 of us were EXTREMELY happy with our food, the service and really everything else. I can still taste my deliciously prepared breakfast. The espresso was also very good. As was the service. There was always someone around to make sure we had enough water and/or coffee or anything else we may have needed.

If you are tired of crappy food and tired of being "underwhelmed" then GO TO CAFE REGALADE - I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised. In fact, it was so good that my partner and I tried to go there for dinner that same night. Unfortunately, they were fully booked but they were very apologetic and told us to try again during the week. I was glad they are busy though as it means they won't be going anywhere so that's a good thing.

We will most definitely go back for both breakfast and for dinner. Oh ya, also great that they open at 8:30 (or 9:00 am, can't remember) for breakfast which is nice for those that don't sleep in until 11 am on weekends :-)

Thanks to all the folks at Cafe Regalada and La Regalade for having high standards and for knowing how to cook and how to take care of your customers, it's much appreciated! :-)

Not Worth the View!
Submitted Monday, July 18, 2011 - 3:17pm [Dine in]

Sadly disappointed, almost mad about going to Monks tonight. As background, I've been a professional chef for over 25 years at some really great places.

Yes, the view is great, but you have to expect more than just the view for the prices charges (entrees between $25 and $35ish). Service was just okay (had to ask for bread 3 times), waitress likely busy but left us looking around for service on more than one occasion. Appetizer of scallops not bad (rice was really boring, as in no flavor at all, but scallops pretty tasty but quite oily). Two of us ordered the special Cobb Salad (I know, not really exciting but a good Cobb Salad can be delicious). As advertised on the menu, it was a Tiger Prawn Cobb Salad with heirloom tomatoes, pork belly, a 6-minute egg, baby spinach and blue cheese. Sounds pretty good hey? NOT! The pork belly was more like fried thick cut bacon. The prawns were unseasoned pre-cooked prawns - small, like the kind you'd find on a VERY cheap pre-made appy platter from a grocery store - only minus the cocktail sauce which would have least given them some flavor). Then there was the deep fried breaded egg (interesting I guess). As for the blue cheese....ah, I don't remember any blue cheese...enough said. The tomatoes were heirloomLESS imports I'm pretty sure (china maybe), really they were just two cheery tomatoes cut in half. Salad dressing was for sure below par and very unseasoned.

All in all, we were totally not impressed. We were at least happy that we ate semi-heathy and came home not feeling too stuffed.

We should have listened to the previous reviews they were right. But our friend said that we should try it out as it was under new management and/or they had a new chef or something and apparently it's way better now...don't believe anyone btw...it's not true.

Monk's it not worth the money. I think that they believe the view is enough but in reality if the food, service, decor (very old but not in a classy way, more in a "ya were old but who cares, maybe no one will notice kind of way) are not good then no view is really that good. Next time I would rather make a sandwich, grab a beer and look at the view from a park bench on the sea wall.

Definitely will not be repeat customers!

Service Lame - Atmosphere None - Food Tasty
Submitted Thursday, September 23, 2010 - 9:19am [Dine in]

If service and atmosphere are not a priority for you then you are in luck because the food is really quite good. The server I would describe as meek and just generally way too shy to be a server. It was like she was afraid and insecure to the point that you could feel how uncomfortable she was and it's not like we were a scary table or anything. The manager person was much more friendly but he never came by our table once, though he did repeatedly make sure the other 2 tables (that were only 2 feet away from us) were more than happy and content.

The atmosphere was more than dead. When we arrived at 6:30 pm, we were the only table (besides a few people at the bar). We were there until about 8:30 pm and there were only 2 other tables (of 2 people) that came in after we did. The music was not really something that I would say fits the room and or cuisine either. I think at one point there was a Michael Jackson song playing (not dissing Michael or anything, it's just not the most fitting for a "wanna-be-funky" Asian restaurant). I could go on about the atmosphere and the room but honestly it bores me so I will move onto something good...the food.

The food was very nicely done. Good flavors, well cooked and very nice and hot! That being said I am not sure that we will go back (in all honesty we won't, I was just being polite). I feel bad for the chef though as he obviously knows what he is doing and has a good handle on how to cook and make food taste really good but his food is not being matched by the rest of the restaurant.

3 X'S LUCKY!!! Been Great Everytime!
Submitted Sunday, August 8, 2010 - 6:36pm [Dine in]

We have now been to this restaurant 3x's and each time it has been really good. In fact, we sometimes plan trips to Whistler just to go to this restaurant.

Each time we have been with 6 other friends and each time argue that "mine is the best meal, not mine is". How often does that really happen? These days not very often. And on top of all that the service has always been fantastic as well.

It is more expensive yes, but you get what you pay for and honestly if you go when they have their 3 or 4 course meals it is totally worth it.

Can't wait for our next trip to Whistler and the Rim Rock Cafe.

Really Terrible Food - We'll Never Go Back!
Submitted Sunday, August 8, 2010 - 6:30pm [Dine in]

After reading the reviews we thought "we can take not much atmosphere in exchange for some decent food". Only problem is the food is worse than the atmosphere. The butter chicken tasted like Campbells tomato soup with cream and dried chicken.

The vegetable pakoras had to have been deep fried a week earlier and then re-deep fried for us - they were so dry it was almost comical. The rice tasted like ultra-plain (i mean not even a drop of salt) white rice - not even basmati rice. The pea and paneer dish was the best of the bunch - if beige peas are appealing I suppose.

The garlic naan was old dry crunch bread that was lathered in raw garlic and butter. Nothing like waking up the next morning with terrible over-the-top garlic breath. It is just a bad reminder of the terrible meal you ate the night before.

We will most definitely not be back! The Indian food at Oakridge mall is 10 x's better than this was and that's just a food fair for crying out loud.

I am disappointed that people think that this is good food, come on people has no one even had remotely good Indian food before? Try the Indian restaurant in White Rock (I think it's called Little India) and then tell me you still think this is even close to be good.
