Dining without food!
Submitted Friday, July 10, 2009 - 11:43pm [Dine in]

My husband and I visited this new funky-looking Mexican restaurant to celebrate a Friday night. We were both hungry. The ambiance was okay, but nothing to write home about. There was a live DJ, but for what purpose (other than an excuse to charge more) i do not know. We shared a pitcher of guava margarita, which was nothing special.

The most disappointing and shocking thing was the tiny portion sizes. I ordered the Ceviche, which looked like a few table spoonfuls of salsa served with 2 chips. My husband had the chicken taco and the queso salad. I am a petite 5'2 asian, and still found my portion was not enough to feed my cat. My husband is an active, 6 ft mountain climber, who needed a decent size meal. The final bill came up to over $50 and we were starving. We asked to speak with the manager about this, and she gave us a condescending lecture on the meaning of "tapas" - even though nowhere on the menu or on the restaurant was the word tapas posted. We left and went straight to a second restaurant to have a REAL dinner.

Don't go to this place if you actually want to eat.

expectations up in smoke
Submitted Monday, June 22, 2009 - 9:47am [Dine in]

We made a reservation on Father's Day. The restaurant was not even that full. After being seated, we waited at least 30 minutes before anyone even gave us water, and we had to try hard to get their attention. The food took a long time to arrive, and we saw it go to various wrong tables before the server finally found us. We had been sitting there quite hungry and asked the waitress if we could order some bread and she rudely replied that "I'm sure it's coming!."

I ordered the mussels in tomato and cilantro broth and it was horrible. Really tasteless. The mussels were a bit cold and tasted really not good so I asked them to send it back to heat it up. The waitress promptly came back and proceeded to give me a 5 minute lecture on how they were cooked properly, and that maybe I wasn't used to the "freshness" of their ingredients. It was incredibly rude. My father also ordered the mussels and was equally unhappy with the results - watery broth, tasteless, mussels did NOT seem fresh. My husband ordered spaghetti and my mom a sandwich and those were okay - nothing very spectacular but decent.

The total bill came to over about $80 NOT including drinks. We did not order anything other what was mentioned above. I thought for this price, the food should at least be solid without any rudeness from the staff. On our way out of the restaurant, there was a cloud of smoke hovering over the entrance - apparently there was a minor fire in the kitchen and blew into the room.

Delicious Dumplings
Submitted Tuesday, February 3, 2009 - 11:06pm [Dine in]

Been here several times, for lunch and for dinner. Great dumplings!! The steamed pork dumplings with the consume still wrapped inside as you put it in your mouth is excellent! I also really like the steamed vegetarian dumplings. Their pan-fried dumplings - also great. Of course it's fantastic to see all the nice chinese ladies wrapping your dumplings fresh behind the glass counter.

Other main dishes - Spare ribs were very tasty. Szechuan shrimp quite good. The oyster soup/broth/congee concoction was surprisingly pleasant (though it was quite interesting to see oysters cooked in broth.)

Overall, a good chinese restaurant. Always busy, need reservations.

Never served, unapologetic.

The single worst service in any restaurant we have ever been to. Was there with my husband on a weeknight. They were not particularly busy. We ordered two dishes. After waiting about 45min, only one dish arrived with no explanation for the missing second one. Another 15 min pass and a waitress told us the kitchen had made a mistake and not even started on our second dish yet. Waited another long period of time and finally decided to give up and get the bill. My husband never got his food! We were very upset and told the waitress specifically that we didn't think it was reasonable to pay the full price... so they gave us a TWO DOLLAR discount!!!!!!

Bascially, never eating here again. The worst dining experience ever. It was like pulling teeth to get anyone to even talk to us, much less apologize; just full of excuses.

Submitted a review before but it disappeared! Was there twice in the last couple of months. Not a very busy place and did not have reservations or have to wait either time. T

he Saag Ghost is my favourite.. was delicious with the lemon juice mixed in... really flavourful and highly recommended. Chicken Goa was also good. Bhindi was nothing very exciting but maybe that's the way it's meant to be. Butter chicken also very tasty. They kept rolling out an unlimited supply of fresh naan for us with no extra charge. We also had chicken Vindaloo, quite good. Service was impeccable (although a bit slow when there were more people there on the second night). The Sauvignon Blanc was surprisingly good.

Dessert - I love, LOVE the rice pudding there. Just try it. My friends really liked the Pistachio Kulfi - very rich and creamy. Overall a very pleasant dining experience. It'd be nice to see them get more busy and hire more staff!

Worst Chinese Restaurant
Submitted Sunday, January 11, 2009 - 1:20am [Dine in]

I know this is a budget, quickie Hong Kong style eatery, but....
IT'S REALLY BAD!!!
We have never had worse BBQ duck or pork, ever, anywhere.
The service is HOSTILE! Waitress acts like it's a chore to take your order. The meat tastes generally like yesterdays scraps. Noodle soups are often watery with bits of bad meat. There are tons of other restuarants with similar food around the same area but superior quality.
We will never go here again!
The End.

Would have been good, If...
Submitted Sunday, January 11, 2009 - 1:07am [Dine in]

Had reservations but had to wait almost 30min for our table standing by the freezing door, although we did get a bit of complimentary bubbly. The place was so crowded and loud we couldn't talk to each other without shouting and my husband "couldn't hear himself think."

I had the scallop salad and it was fresh and tasty. The duck was very good. My husband ordered a pasta dish and had to order another because it was not nearly big enough. The food was good. Spaghetti bologneise quite good. Did not have dessert. Would go back if only the dining experience was better (less noise, less wait, more space).

Healthy Food, Cheerful Dining
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 10:51pm [Dine in]

Incredibly healthy food - everything organic or made-in-store. We had the pepperoni pizza - the ingredients were so fresh and wholesome! The cream of broccoli soup and the pasta were a bit bland, but it was nice having such a healthy meal. Great place for families with young kids. I admire their comittment to the community & promoting healthy eating and lifestyles.

Big Disappointment for a Previously Great Restaurant
Submitted Friday, May 2, 2008 - 10:35pm [Dine in]

Shijo must have changed management in the last year. It used to be a consistently high quality japanese restaurant with excellent service, fresh sashimi and authentic maki rolls. Service is now unacceptably slow due to understaffing and inexperienced servers. Orders came out one at a time, 15-20min in between, and very disorganized. Maki rolls were a disappointment - the chef opting for trendy mayonnaise sauces rather than authenticity. Shijo is a decent restaurant, but for the prices charged, I was expecting much better service and much better food. And what's with the decor? black from ceiling to floor is not so appealing. It used to be a much more interesting place with a real Japanese flare.

great date night
Submitted Saturday, April 26, 2008 - 11:12pm [Dine in]

Great venue for casual weekend or dress-up dinner. Good choices for 3-course menu, reasonably priced and generous portions. Delicious appetizers, very solid entrees. Extensive dessert selection. I had the steamed mussels - they were perfectly done and not overcooked. The striploin is very good, so is the duck breast. Cozy & romantic atmosphere. Will require reservation most of the time since it's a popular place.

The pasta is GREAT!
You can pick a pasta, then pick a sauce, and
they're all delicious. A genuine and friendly waitress,
tasty appetizers, cold beer and wine in a cozy ambiance.
The broccoli cheddar soup is fantastic.
Don't miss out on this restaurant.
