If you're looking for an authentic english tea go to Murchies or the Blethering Place.
The empress high tea is a big scam. The sandwiches are dry. The strawberries are of poor quality and the variety of sandwiches is pathetic. Even the little pastries aren't that good.
I've had high teas all over Canada and I've never seen such hype with such poor quality.
You're paying for the ambience, full stop.
If you have a hankering for an omelette - this is the place! You can pick your own ingredients or choose from the menu. The ingredients are always fresh.
The scrambled eggs are just perfect - they're steamed. (note that they go a bit 'gray' if you don't eat them right away - nothing wrong with them, just due to the way they're cooked).
Soups are very good. Never had one I didn't like.
The salad with the side of veggie burger is fantastic. (now I'm hungry!)
I used to work nearby and have had most items on the menu. Never had a meal I didn't like.
Baked goods are also first class.
Potatos are much better, they've changed them recently.
Friendly and cheerful staff - they seem to be able to retain good people!
A little pricey, but worth it - you know you're getting good quality food.
I've had a number of items from their menu - my favourite is the southwest chicken wrap. Very Good!! Really interesting blend of flavours and textures and a really good price.
Salads are good. Unusual and tasty salsa.
Tortilla pie is great.
Call ahead if you're going to be picking up at lunch hour, they get really busy.
This is one of the places in Victoria that I really hope doesn't go out of business.
Staff are great.
Decor is tacky as has been noted in another review. Seats are very uncomfortable.
I have had bad food there, the waitress asked me how my food was and I said it's making me feel sick - she giggled and walked away. I went up to the bar to pay my bill and the woman (owner I think) had the good sense not to charge me. I think a lot of restaurants in Victoria are having a hard time finding good staff.
Good salsa. Skimpy servings of guac and sour cream. Had a few items, but the only one that I know will be good is the chilli flautas.
Margheritas are not drinkable.
One step up from Taco Time, two steps down from Adrianas
I've been eating here for 6 years! This used to be my favourite chinese food restaurant... In 2006 something changed. The noodles aren't as good, and the overall quality seems to have gone down a notch. For instance the green bean dish - I don't know what they're putting in it now, but it tastes bad, maybe it's the sauce and the beans aren't crisp and fresh like I have come to expect. The ginger fried beef is hard and dry, not crispy anymore. I've been let down every time I've eaten there in the past year. Very disappointing, but still better than a lot of chinese food places in town - I would keep recommending it, just not as much as I used to.
Serving sizes are smaller, but the prices haven't gone up.
If you're looking for good quality authentic english food, come here!
If you're looking for a gourmet meal with all the trimmings - go someplace else.
Bangers and mash - outstanding. (personally I prefer my fried tomatoes to be slices not wedges, but that's the only 'fault' I can find!)
Curry - fantastic.
Haven't had the high tea yet, but many assure me it is far superiour to the Empress (which is overpriced and of poor quality).
Good concept, some good ideas (flipping a coin for a free special).
The quality of the food is not good. I could get a better hamburger patty from the the grocery store. I've eaten there three times as it's cheap enough to be a favoured location with everyone at work; I won't be going there anymore though.
Fries are soft and get soggy easily.
They seem to be more focused on the idea of a restaurant than providing good food.
The place could be a lot cleaner too.
Interesting menu, I've eaten most items on it and only found one I don't like! (the falafel).
Favourites are the curry chicken crepes and the risotto with chicken.
Great garden salad.
Very good drinks.
