My friends and I were looking for relaxing dinner for our yearly "guys night out" get together (Thanks Nath!). We thought that Tropika would be a good place to go. There were seven of us, and most of us had been there before. We all had favourable prior experiences. It was a busy Friday night, which didn't favour the relaxing part of our dinner goal. Still, the behavior of the servers bordered on outrageous. They expected us to select dishes from their fine menu within 5 minutes of our arrival. As we politely said "No, not quite ready" for the next 10 minutes, we finally settled on 6 dishes picked out under duress.
The dishes came out in rapid fire fashion, all within minutes of each other and not long after ordering it. The food was pretty good for the most part, just as I remembered it. The Tropika fried chicken and the Lamb curry were "to die for". The pineapple fried rise and Pad Thai were good as well. However, as we enjoyed the meal, the constant nagging from the server saying "Anything else?" will always haunt me.
Although they didn't have the signature deep fried banana and ice cream, we managed to get two dessert orders in. The second dessert didn't arrive and I forget what it was, but they didn't charge us for it. The dessert I had was the Rambutan ice cream - don't bother. The Rabutan slices surrounded the smallest "scoop" of ice cream you can imagine.
Soon after finishing the dessert, we felt the pressure to leave. Dinner from start to finish was about an hour. The bottom line: good food, annoying service. In fact, you'd have a better time grabbing takeout and eating it in front of the restaurant. We'll cross this place off for our future annual dinners.
