Big Meh

Inian food is subpar to other I have had. Nothing special, but nothing that bad either. Service is ok. Par for the course.

Delivery for their pizza however was a gong show.

First took FOUR times to get the woman answering the phone to get the address right, she kept yelling "WHAT?" in my ear. Should have hung up here. Pizza took an hour and 15 to arrive, not cool, pizza was however. So now cold pizza very hungry, and low and behold they forgot the pineapple on a Hawaiian, sort of turns the Hawaiian into a ham pizza. Pretty disappointing. Didn't bother to call and complain, just wont frequent here again.

Not authentic, not even close...
Submitted Tuesday, August 2, 2011 - 9:11pm [Dine in]

Food is bland and not even close to being southern.

Brisket sandwich was actually pretty good, however the rub they use is bland and does little for the meat.Too bad it was served on a grocery store bun that was dry and had little taste. The same here goes for the pulled pork sandwich.

Sides are underwhelming, beans were just plain baked beans with some smoke, no sausage or zing like real southern beans. Collard greens tasted like boiled pork and bland beans, no vinegar (a essential for collard greens) or anything else, just that same old smoket taste that was in all the food.

The sauce wasnt bad, but again too smokey with no other flavors to be had except molasses, and for sometthing with so much moleasses it was quite bland.

The servers were great and friendly, the ambiance wasnt bad, goofy junk on the walls, some obscure jazzy blues playing (shocking). In all I got the feel that this was a west coast Canadian take on southern food. Much like vancouver "Sushi' or "Chinese food".

I wont be back, I can make better at home...

Underwhelming

Im going to be quick on this,

Food - Not good not bad, not a good way to have a great restaurant. Had some "rib tips" were deep fried smoked dry ribs. WAY over cooked and hard as hell. Main dishes were ok, more braised than authentic BBQ. sauce is mediocre. I guess if you can't make your own pulled pork this would seem decent, but I can, and I know whats better... mine. The sides were pretty plain, too much vinegar in the beans and coleslaw. Mashed potatoes were just like mom used to make, dry and boring. All pretty mellow.

Service - Ok I guess, seemed a little flaky. I have experienced alot worse though.

Value - Very bad. They write on the menu how they cut their own meat to save the customer money. I don't think that $18.95 for 4 slices of brisket and mass-made sides (coleslaw, mashed potatoes, and beans) is a very good deal at all. Brisket is a pretty cheap cut.

Ambiance - Oh the humanity, too much spiky hair and affliction t-shirts with bad tribal tattoos, too much wine gobbling suits and overall more people drinking like its a bar then enjoying the food, but hey, if you had the food you would drink to enjoy it too. It was very loud and very "open" not that I am against open floor plans, but when you have a table of 10+ drunks beside you cussing and swearing during your meal it gets old fast.

Been here tried this, not coming back.

Mediocre & Small Portions
Submitted Wednesday, August 5, 2009 - 8:58am [Dine in]

Went here last night. Service was good, nothing exceptional, nothing horrible so that was nice.

Seated quickly, order taken and arrived in an allowable time. Too bad the portions can be small depending on what you order. I had some sort of buffalo chicken burger. It was ok, but the "side" of mashed potatoes was nothing but a small ice cream scoop size serving. No other sides, just a regular sized burger and a lil bit of potatoes. Way too small and not worth the $12 they ask for it.

It was probably the last time I eat here, everything is well overpriced for what you get (both in quality and quantity). Too bad that they changed their menu so much, it used to be decent.

Went here on a whim. Turned out to be the right decision. Our server was friendly and very attentive. Never had to wait on anything. For once a waitress actually made us feel welcome to a place. It was a nice change.

The food was actually really good. We had the "shared platter" which was a smattering of different things, kalamari, wings, potato skins etc etc. It was great. Everything was cooked well and each item stood out and held its own. For $18 it filled both of us well and tasted good going down. We also got a pound of wings on the side. Very tasty, well done. Right amount of sauce, right amount of cooking. Good wings are good wings.

All in all it was a great experience.

What a gyp. Their breakfast is better quality and value than the rest of the drivel on the menu. I had a "panini" It was under 1/4" thick and tasted of cardboard. Lousy ingredients, lack of presentation, and an overall feeling of "we don't give a F***"

We had 4 different servers throughout the time there, no one could get us anything we asked for. My fiancee had to go and ask for butter for her english muffin. They toasted it and served it dry. Never mind having to track down ketchup and salt & pepper for her omelette. The omellette was actually palatable, decent size, ingredients were ok. Too bad the hashbrowns were pre-made and soaked with oil until they were inedible.

The food was beloe medocre, the music was WAY too loud for 11:30am. The servers were more worried about collecting tips (which we did NOT leave) than actually serving (maybe if they did they would have gotten a tip). The place was just brutal. i will never be back to any of these places again...

Stopped here Sunday morning to grab some breakfast. We arrived at 9:30 as we were informed that after 10am it can get quite hectic with long wait times. Luckily we got there early and were seated within 5 minutes. Our server was great, attentive and friendly, even though she was working a large area she did not disappoint!

The food was pretty good. Nice selection of bennies, traditional breakfast, and omelets as well. Food arrived in a relatively short amount of time and was fresh. Everything is home made, no store bough sauces!

This is what we have been looking for, nothing fancy, no chain-restaurant frozen food. Just good solid homemade food and at a decent price too!

We will be back!

Disappointed...

'bout sums it up.

We had tried to come here a while back in the summer but the place was packed. I put that in the back of my head as usually when you have to wait 45 minutes at a diner the food ain't bad. So we arrived here after we decided that Mc Donald's just wasn't gonna cut it (boy were we wrong).

Lets start, its a nice place, pretty clean besides the black dried ketchup lid and leaking vinegar on the table.

We were seated and drink orders placed. All seemed well so far. Then we ordered...

Myself I went on a limb and tried the "Xtreme Poppers" Mistake number one. I did expect some sort of frozen jalapeno popper concoction-snack, but a Costco special? Come on. I could have had a whole box for less than they charged for these. The coleslaw was alright, as was the fries. Nothing special, nothing bad. Reminded me more of what you would get at a concession stand. Not a diner.

For my fiancee, it was different. She ordered a "World Famous" one piece of halibut. The staple of fish-n-chip shops... Firstly, it arrived without tarter... This struck us as odd as it's a FISH N CHIPS shop, usually tarter is pretty free flowing...So she asked and it arrived after the airy waitress remembered on her third pass by the table. To top it off, its very upscale KRAFT tarter, nothing home made, nothing even special, just a dollop of soybean oil based crap.

Then the actual "fish" The portion was actually quite large and looked quite tasty (from my perspective) until however you cut it open and the grease starts to flow... This was by far the greasiest and bottom soggy fish I have ever seen or tasted. My fiancee is now regretting ordering it (and I'm regretting suggesting the place) as the grease is upsetting her stomach (as well mine).

As some reviewers have stated here before, 'there are too many good restaurants in Vancouver and area to waste time and money here".

Sub-par food, mediocre service, and no reason for this place to hold a "World Famous" title guarantee's that I won't be back.

Best Ribs I Ever Had!
Submitted Thursday, July 17, 2008 - 11:14pm [Dine in]

Ok,

I am a fan of southern soul food. My fiancée however had never experienced this culinary delight before. So after some e-research and some luck from dine-here we decided to go. And I'm glad we did.

First as stated in some other reviews this is in the Cloverdale Curling Rink. Access is off 176 (nortbound), it is well marked (with signs for Boonie's) for those intimidated by the thought of venturing abroad. The ambiance isn't great, but it was quiet and quite serene as the curling clubs are in hiatus until September. There was good southern / blues music playing at a nice level which added alot for us personally.

Now to the good, and I mean goooooood stuff. Them ribs that are slathered in the best sauce I have had in a long time. Add the fact that they are so tender you cant pick them up with out the meat falling off the bones as you eat. From talking to the staff I learned that the rive are smoked for three hours before cooking and then sauced. I will state again, we both decided that these are the best ribs we have ever had! (sorry mom) Top that with portions that blanketed over half the plate, and thats only a 1/2 order!

The portions were great value. I had the large dinner which contained two sides, I chose red beans on rice and the collard greens. Both were above expectations and were inundated with fresh tasting ingredients and homemade care. Add a piece of sweet cornbread with melted butter, and you have yourself one hell of a meal. I was beyond full, never mind my fiancée who had the "small meal" and only was able to eat three of her nine ribs (and a good dollop of oven baked home-style mac n cheese and cornbread)

I hope that they stay going as they are trying to keep it going with the curlers out of the building. So they are relying on people like me (and hopefully you!) that love and can appreciate good soul food.

i usually hate Chinese food... but..
Submitted Saturday, December 29, 2007 - 6:33pm [Dine in]

i usually HATE Chinese food of any kind...I find it dull, boring and frankly it all tastes the same. So anyways my fiancee has been bugging me to go out for some Chinese as we almost never do because I hate it.

So I read some reviews here and decided that if we're to go out we might as well find something thats supposed to be good...

And it WAS, the staff were on top of it we were promptly seated and drink orders were taken. They were very attentive almost obtrusive ALMOST, they were very polite and respectful.

We started with the usual spring rolls, They were delivered very promptly. First thing I noticed was that they were HUGE, usually you get the same old small tasteless deep-fried crap rolls, not these, the ingredients were fresh and even still crisp. More flavour than even my Asian cuisine indulging bride to be was used to.

The main course was a combo of a mushroom and chicken chow mien with soft noodle. Real shitake mushrooms and lots of fresh chicken. Top quality. Also was a plate of good-ole sweet n sour pork. Again, best I either one of us had. Fresh peppers and onions in the sauce. Very very tasty. We rounded it out with some BBQ pork fried rice. It was a more "traditional" plate with lots of BBQ pork, peas and egg. Again, best we have ever had. Also have to mention was that the portions were enormous. We had our lunch with enough left over for two more meals for the both of us. This is unusual as I can eat quite a bit at any setting.

The dishes each had a unique flavour, combined with good staff and reasonable prices made a convert out of me. Now I actually look forward to having some of the more exotic items on their expansive menu.

I hope that this place stays open, for if it closes I would have to revert to excluding Chinese cuisine from my favored treats. This is something that I would hate to do.

Sushi is some of the best I have had in the lower mainland. Always fresh, always tasty.

The only drawback to this place is the size of it. To dine in you better be ready to listen to some teeny boppers (close to NDSS) going off on their usual tirades on fashion and junk... This is easily overlooked when you try any sashimi that they have on the menu...

I recommend getting take out and arriving a few minutes later than they suggest... All worth it for the best sushi I have found!

Always rolled nice and tight, presented even nicer, and always friendly. My girlfriend and I eat here weekely and never have had anything to complain about. We tried Kirin to see what the fuss was, and this place out shone them hands down...

Gooood Food
Submitted Saturday, May 12, 2007 - 2:26pm [Dine in]

My girlfriend and i went here to try some Indian food based on the reviews here. Place was pretty quiet so the service was great. Only flaw was that the waitress had problems with a "rye and coke" but alas I finally got one, sans ice, but no biggie.

The food was divine, simply put. We started with a Vegetable Pakora which was great. I found that the blend of chilies made it quite enjoyable heat wise, but not too much as to be too much for people that don't indulge much in hot foods.

For the main course we had the butter chicken (of course) which was great, maybe a bit more meat could be used but a lot of tasty tandoori sauce made up for it. Also, we had the shahi korma, a awesome lamb curry that had me addicted for days craving the stuff. Not a thin curry but a nice rich buttery curry with lamb so tender it literally melted in your mouth. We complemented this with a generous portion of jasmine rice that was cooked to perfection and topped with cilantro. To finish it the best part (maybe I'm plain) was the nan bread...wow wa sit good, soft chewy, fresh as you can get it. Just made the meal hit that extra bar higher.

I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone that either has never tried Indian food, as you wont be disappointed or overwhelmed by spices. Or those that thoroughly enjoy this food. Everything was quite nicely balanced, this is where the professionalism of the chefs really shines.

Im going back...
