Paper Rock Bar & Grill395 Kingsway, Vancouver
don't expect a classy joint here
Submitted Sunday, June 19, 2011 - 11:19pm [Dine in]

The location is typical Kingsway, a tad seedy surroundings, parking so-so, located on first floor with stairs.
Looks like a converted association or clubhouse, has TVs and fairly loud radio music. Some of the servers don't speak clear English even.

The only good thing going is the food, not the very best but done well although the menu is somewhat limited, the maki is fresh and the miso soup not too salty. The decor is dated and incongruent, the seats are torn, upkeep and ambience is rather questionable.

Even that is ok given the food but the service is rude, doesn't seem the servers have much training, some dressed very too casually and not very professional.

May not return there, something's not quite right there.

ok-ish food but good service
Submitted Sunday, November 14, 2010 - 5:10pm [Dine in]

Been here many times. The parking is easy and the service is excellent, very friendly and caring staff.
The food is so-so, the sauces are a bit too sour for my taste, and served a bit cold. The ice-cream is good but the portions are getting smaller.

Good if you have time to dine out before catching a movie. The Olive Garden offers serious competition though.

Excellent food, reasonable prices

Have been here and introduced many people also over the last 10 or more years. Used to be in
Moncton Street, and now is nearer the pier.

Their batter is light and tasty, and their fish is always fresh and cooked to perfection. The fries are
to die for. Service is prompt and the owners and staff are friendly. Place is a bit small and can be crowded
in that it can be hard to get in and out of the tables. Washrooms are clean. Parking may be difficult on sunny days and Fridays. They close one Thursday every month.

Great prices and food so-so service

Been here many times. The place is high-class looking, high regal ceilings and the staff
are well-dressed. Mannerisms of some of them belong to a lower class of restaurant, herding
guests as if they were sheep. The test-pieces of har gow and hôh-fun are good, their cold dishes are
spectacular, as are their char-siew pãos. Place is not too loud as their are curtains to muffle the din usually
found in Cantonese restaurants..."Din" Sum so to speak. Recommendable place, looks smart and elegant, good food, and parking not to difficult, washrooms are clean.

expensive looking good location poor service
Submitted Monday, October 11, 2010 - 10:16pm [Dine in]

Returned again because remembered that the food was good.
We were not disappointed by the food, it was to a good standard, hot and fresh. The congee was somewhat tasteless though. The test-piece was the har-gow, which was good.
Ambience is high-class and clean, and not too noisy like most Cantonese retaurants tend to be.
Dim sum came fast but service is slapshod, the waiters seem to be in a disarray, like free-range chicken without heads.
Pricey and had to wait in line.
Go back here? Nahhh, not if we can help it.

A good Bohemian style restaurant which serves Taiwanese food with panáche. Background music is usually jazz/samba. Ambience is relaxing.

Their lunch special is really worth trying, they make awesome fried chicken, beef, fried rice with transparent shrimps, their noodles are heavenly.

Only thing is service is rather slow, and our waitress does not know how to explain the menu well. The staff tend to hide in the kitchen or behind the counter.

Prices are reasonable.

Parking first of all is totally horrible, very difficult and few spaces what there are.

The ambience is good in the place, clean and modern with a look of solidity, giving the impression that it is bigger than it really is.

Service is average, polite waitresses with average speed of delivery of ordered food. The menu is easy to read and the choice is pretty wide.

They say to test the mettle of such a noodle, rice and congee place you have to try the Wonton (not wanton)
noodle soup and the rice noodles with beef. Both passed the taste test with flying colours. Also tried their fried noodles with assorted meats, very tasty albeit a bit soggy because of too much gravy.

Recommendable restaurant.

Great food, lousy ambience
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 4:57pm [Dine in]

Been here since over a decade ago. The food is surprisingly tasty and well prepared for this what
seems a bit of a hole-in-the-wall place. Try their lettuce wraps and crab, always fresh. Noodles and rice are well cooked. Service is pretty decent, attentive waiters, smiling... Washrooms are gross.

Definitely good value, although the place needs a major overhaul, appears old and dingy.

Introduced many customers here over the years.

Parking is not bad, easy to find location. Service is passable but at times have to wait quite a while to be attended although they are always polite. There is a nice large aquarium as you walk in.
The buffet food is good, tasty and authentic, and not dried up nor cold like in other buffets.

In the evenings the prices are pretty exorbitant, and now plus tips and the Horrible Stupid Tax...I don't know..
Usually the place is not full when we come in. Decor is standard, a tad dark inside though. Washrooms are clean.

Now I'm wary!
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 1:35am [Dine in]

Used to come here a lot and bring others also, but from these reviews the place seems to have gone downhill. Tipping is discretionary and should not be forced, and I agree with the other writers, that is very bad and a surefire turn-off of clientéle.

The service was never a strong point. The servers seem always so rushed, distant... Their maki is fine and as are many of the AYCE order items. Often, like Richmond Sushi, you only get 70% of what you actually ordered, as they have conveniently selective memories.

The place is clean enough but the set-up is noisy, at times very noisy even. It looks impressive with the water wheel and what not. Sometimes they place you right inside in the netherbowels of the restaurant which has never seen sunlight.

You get the feeling that you are just a number here, lots of rushing around of staff and some disorder. Seldom a greeting at the front and often no one is even there.

I may come back but more like I'd end up here if other places are shut.

Nothing wrong with the service, friendly and attentive enough. Ambience a little dingy and parking is awful in this strip mall area.

It's just that the food is not really authentically Japanese. It all tastes the same, and does not have a freshness to it. Tried their salmon, tasted old, and the gravy a tad salty. Not impressed as we've been to many other Japanese restaurants.

Price is so-so.

Parking is horrendous as is the case in this particular location.

Decor and ambience seems tired and dated, and not that clean.
Servers greet you but the service itself is slow, we've been here quite a few times. The lunch combos are of good value. Portions are large enough albeit somewhat greasy, although tasty. Their pizza is not worth writing home about but the lamb and kebabs are very tasty and authentic Hellâs!!!

The place can get really noisy, but the wasrooms are fairly clean.

Parking is horrible.

Service is so-so. The food is fine, quantities are decent. Very dark inside, perhaps to create an exclusive
feel, but at times can't see what one's eating.

There is a wide variety of choices and combinations of food and drinks which is a good point. The place is clean as are the washrooms. It is not too noisy and the high seat dividers ensure this.

The Mirch cannot be smirched
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 12:53am [Dine in]

Here is one of the better Indian/Punjabi restaurants, just wish there were more near the Guildford end of Surrey.

Parking is a bit tight, but easy to find as it its located just south of 96th Avenue and 120 Street.

The food is good and zesty, the quality of meat and their Tandoori chicken is superb. Only thing is the lack of enough of their excellent gravy to dip the nans and flavour the rice, so the food is a bit dry. Some good choices and specials available however.

Ambience is good and quiet to be able to hear yourselves speak, but always wondered that with this quality of food how come there aren't many diners every time we come here.

Service is good and attentive, professional and friendly. Decor is comfortable, and the restaurant is spacious and clean.

A recommendable place, one cannot smirch the Mirch.

Don't expect a dining experience
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 12:40am [Dine in]

It has predictable and poor service as one has to repeat often to get the order right, a very high rate of turnover of staff as expected. No better nor worse than, say, a Mickie D's.

The Caesar salad and other value orders are good value, but it used to be better. The chili con carne tastes better than Timmy Horts which is way too salty. However at Wendy's it tends to be too watery which is a shame as it tastes half decent. Burgers are so-so only.

It's a kind of place you want to eat and get out fast.

Usually a place to end up with as it is open longer hours. The root beer is superb, the fries are a tad dry, the Chubby chicken is bland, as are the burgers. Everything is cooked somewhat salty for some reason. The service is scanty as you just order the food and take it back to your seat. Need special permission for them to open the washroom doors which can be a pain. Lots of room so one can have a quiet conversation, they supply newspapers and newletters.

trusty authentic Cantonese food
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 12:30am [Dine in]

I love Cantonese food and this place, although not being the best, offers Surrey people some choice at least.
Glad it is located where it is, convenient with easy parking. It has been renovated and is clean and cheery inside, so the ambience is positive. Service is courteous and fast, attentive but not intrusive.

Ordered vegetables, chicken corn soup, fried noodles and rice noodles. I'd say a 7 out of 10. The cooking is authentic and not westernized which is important. Quantity is a bit on the low side whilst the price although not unreasonable, is not a bargain either. Great if you are not very very hungry.

Recommendable and a much needed Chinese restaurant as Surrey has very few decent ones.

fresh fried chicken, a bit pricey
Submitted Sunday, September 5, 2010 - 12:20am [Dine in]

Located in a good spot serving the Fraser Glen community. Parking is convenient.
Famed fried chicken strips and potato wedges tastes hot and fresh, portions are so-so. However
the fried chicken legs are very expensive, which one can get from KFC at half the price.
Tables are not always ready, understaffed with only one person doing the ordering and cashier and cooking.
Ambience is homely and cosy, and not as noisy and some other fried chicken places.

The predecessors of this place were terrible. I remember tasting detergent powder in a dish served to me back then. Now it has improved, both decor and service. Tried it a couple of times and it was fine, the ox tongue and steak, etc. Parking may be tough due to limited space. Toilets are clean.
