Pho Japolo2070 Marine Drive, North Vancouver
Good solid Pho on the North Shore
Submitted Monday, February 21, 2011 - 4:30pm [Dine in]

I've been here a total of 3 times now and I've never been dissapointed.
When I started my job in North Van I had wondered where all the asian noodle joints were. Mind you, I live in Burnaby where the noodles are a-plenty!
My colleague mentioned that that there was a little 'hole-in-the-wall' pho house along Marine drive and although he had never been, that the parking lot was always full (with overflow in the Travelodge behind) and the shop was nearly full everytime he's driven by.

I went w/ two of my colleagues and we had a pretty solid experience. I'm happy to announce - no MSG in the stock! (If you've seen my previous review of Potter's Garden, you'll understand).

6.49 buys you a small bowl, while 7.49 buys you a large bowl - significantly larger to boot.
In Burnaby the prices are generally less expensive (4.99 = small, 5.99 = large), but since this is pretty much the ONLY Vietnamese pho house in North Vancouver with palatable pho - I'm totally okay with it!

On the menu, they have a column for the "Adventurous" - think tripe, tendon and all those delicious type of beefy meats :) and a column titled "Fortifying" for the hungry, hearty eaters.

The staff were nice and helpful/attentive. I was with two pho newbies and they had a great time.

The decor is that of an old 'cottage' wood interior. Not pretty or glamorous - but name me a pho house that is :) Important thing is that the tables were clean and each table was occupied - A good sign.

Today I went alone for lunch and ordered a small fortifying bowl - fatty brisket, tendon, tripe, eye of round (rare beef). The broth was delicious - not overly salty or fish saucy. Not fatty either. I ordered a cup of hot coffee with condensed milk. Delish. Bill came to $11.00 for tax and tip.

And as I sit here writing my review - I don't feel dehydrated. A great feeling knowing that there was no MSG hidden in my pho. :)

I hate to give them a bad review.
I mean, the food was tasty. Juicy fatty, delicious galbi (shortribs) marinated in a sweet sesame soy - rich with flavour... It was the aftermath that changed my overall opinion.

My Fiancé and I arrived at around 8pm for a late night dinner. Looking back I wish we had gone earlier.... (I'll get into this later...). I ordered the Spicy Pork bone Soup as my appetizer, the BBQ Marinated short ribs and the BBQ pork, chicken and beef plate combination.

We waited for about 10 mins and then they had arrived w/ a cart filled with all our food and equipment and the little side dishes that were very very tasty.

The waitress set up the stove and turned it on, she then grabbed the tongs and started piling on our short ribs on the cold grill. So much for the searing eh? she piled on vegetables and crowded all the meat.. i mean - what happened to "cook yourself?"... I wasn't impress by this and neither was my Fiancé. Upon close inspection of the plate of meat, we noticed there was no chicken nor pork. Just a few little piles of beef. (all that was left for us to cook ourselves). We rang the handy dandy bell at our table and the server came back. I asked her if that was our order. She smiled and left. Came back, said sorry and took our plate.
5 mins later she arrived and returned out plate with a few little mounds of chicken on it.

She came back a few seconds later with the appetizer pork bone soup. The bowl was hot, the soup was hot, but the pork bone/meat was cold! I think it was started to warm up in the hot broth but it was really hard to juggle eating the meat before it burnt and got cold sitting on myrice while eating the pork bone soup... I really wish it had arrived as my appetizer.... and wish we coudl have eaten it first and taken our time w/ cooking - if only they gave us that chance to let us cook when we wanted to!

Well - the meats were tasty - there really wasn't a lot, but all in all it was filling w/ the rice. The broth of the soup was nice and tasty and when warmed up the pork meat was nice as well!

We paid the bill - came to around 50.00 with tax for two people. Stuffed? Yea - I'd say so....

We went home, went to bed around 11:30 (I know, you don't want to hear the details) - but we woke up at 2am, again at 3am, then 5am, and then 6:30am. Why you ask? MSG sleeplessness! We couldn't sleep! The meat and soup were chock full of MSG and we were beyond dehydrated all with a migraine to boot!

The food was tasty, the service wasn't the best but the MSG aftermath has ruined all possibility of ever stepping into the restaurant ever again. I will not return!

The service makes up for everything else......

My Fiancé and I have driven by this so many times and scoffed at the ghetto signs, but decided for once, we'd go in and judge for ourselves.
We went in on a Monday evening after work and there were only two other diners there at the time.
True, the decor is incredible dated but the Host/Server makes up for everything. Extremely attentive and sincere. I felt guilty - I felt as if I was ordering my mother around chasing my food for me.
I ordered the prime rib (9.95), and he ordered the black pepper steak (13.95). Both done to our liking: Mine medium rare, his also. The portion sizes were quite small - likely what Canada Food Guide suggests anyhow, so I was okay with it. Both were tasty and we really didn't have any complaints.
Will we go back? We'd go back for the service, but not for the steaks. The important idea is that we finally went in and tried it. Who knows how long they will be in business?

If you're tired of the usual food court hamburger - you gotta try this.

I ordered the small two item plus noodle combo.... all just under $6.00
Orange Chicken - Not the gooey, gummy variety. It's always crisp and lightly covered with tangy sauce.
Salt and Pepper Filet - A spicy basa/bass type of fish filet, lightly fried
Curry Noodles aka Singapore street noodles.

Fantastic, quick, cheap and delicious. MSG? None!

The ladies are always very nice and the cook in the back is always replenishing the food due to the quick turnover.

Brontosaurus ribs. Thursdays. Do it.
Submitted Monday, June 15, 2009 - 12:05pm [Dine in]

These jumbo beef ribs are offered every Thursday. They start at 5pm... and are usually sold out by 8pm. So go!

Not sure how long this special will last, but they've been a Thursday specialty for the last two years... who knows eh?

Service is friendly, and you will have a view of the game at every seat. Try to get a seat up at the second level. The booths offer some secluded privacy away from the noise downstairs.

Other things to try: crispy dry ribs, wings, and even the tofu and beans are delish!

Generous portions and service
Submitted Monday, June 15, 2009 - 11:51am [Dine in]

Decided to get take out for dinner as we were craving for some delish roti canai, and we definitely got it! Also ordered the sambal green beans, pork satay skewers and green curry with chicken. Like said, the portions were very generous. The green curry was filled with chunks of tender juicy chicken breast, onions and potatoes. Very flavourful.

We had ordered two bowls of rice to go w/ the curry - Altho - is it usually standard that rice comes with it?

Service was fantastic. Even though we were ordering take out - we were offered a seat w/ a drink and some nuts to enjoy while we waited. Didn't wait too long.
