Vassilis Souvlaki Greek Taverna6558 Kingsway, Burnaby
Owner rude, food mediocre, service just plain "odd"
Submitted Friday, March 8, 2013 - 1:45pm [Dine in]

I took a buisiness client to Vasillis last night. When I went to the front to mention I'd made a reservation the owner had to be called? The owner then directed the girls to take me to a table. While the owner was directing his staff, I wasn't acknowledged at all and he proceeded to issue commands while speaking with his mouth full, adding in another bite as I stood there (absoultely disgusting) - had I not been meeting someone I would have left just based on this. My guest arrived, we ordered an appy to share - we had about 5 minutes before our meals arrived. My roast lamb was a lamb shank - no big deal there, the rice was over cooked - it was just okay. The server however, kept trying to clear our plates away while were were clearly eating - it was odd and felt like we were being rushed out the door - however, we could clearly see they were still serving new customers. Server was friendly enough - but really unskilled - reaching over us, taking our plates away early - obviously missed basic serving rules. I won't go back - there are MUCH better places to eat at MUCH better value with MUCH better service. I am greatly confused how this place could ever have been voted Best Greek in Burnaby

Everything is great except the tri-colour pasta
Submitted Tuesday, July 5, 2011 - 1:35pm [Dine in]

Their pasta's have always been a hit and always such a good deal. You have to order a "large", simply so you can have 3 or 4 meals... The Hot Caesar salad is fabulous. But man did they miss the mark on the Tri-Colour Pasta (red, white, green- italian flag). It is so very dry I almost couldn't eat it and after taking my impressive amount remaining home - it later simply went into the garbage. My sister and I felt the exact same. Just a little ladle of each sauce over top would have fixed it...

Santali's Greek on Edmonds
Submitted Tuesday, July 5, 2011 - 1:29pm [Take-out]

First time and won't go back. Cost me $16 for what I would get for $8.95 at Greek Taverna on Columbia St and their food tastes so much better - restaurant is nicer, has a great view of the river... Santali's is a 3 dressed up as a 9 unfortunately. Had the Calamari lunch - Calamari was fresh and well prepared, but the tzitki was so thick and hard I had to soften it with some sour cream - taking away it's flavour - or maybe I should have spread it with a knife onto each of my little pieces of squid? Rice - blah, Potato - blah, came with a piece of brocolli, zuccini and a carrot that were cooked right. 1/2 a slice of pita - no big deal, can't dip it into the Tziki anyways... Oh comes with Garden Salad or Caesar Salad - that should have been my first clue that this would not be good greek had to pay extra to have a greek salad with my greek meal - doesn't sound right? Overall, just not impressed - too bad cause it's just around the corner and on my way home from work. Greek Taverna or Mr. Greek in Maillardville, there are just too many that do it right and reasonable. I just feel I spent twice the money for no value. Service was, fast, friendly, professional.

Tom Yum Gai Soup - my cure for the common cold
Submitted Wednesday, March 17, 2010 - 4:25pm [Dine in]

Lunch special is excellent (Currey, Satay, Salad, Rice, Spring Roll), Dinner portions on the small side. Price reasonable. Good to go with a group and order a lot of different dishes. Best dinner is a Tom Yum Gai Soup (vegetarian is especially good - fresh, flavourable and not heaped with fatty coconut milk) with a bowl of rice and fried banana and mango icecream for desert...

It's a staple...
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 3:25pm [Dine in]

Gino's has been around a long time and their food has always been consistently good tasting with good value. Their Gino's House Special Pizza is something you just can't get anywhere else... I like their escargot and their Greek Dishes - their garlic bread could still use some work i.e. actual real garlic would be a treat...

The new decor is nice, makes for a pleasant meal out.

Was good - Not anymore...
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 3:18pm [Dine in]

When the Heritage Grill first opened the food was fresh, beautifully presented, ambiance was great and the service staff looked like they liked to work there - we regularly went and had a meal. Now a few years later, we still go hoping to get the old vibe and are consistently disappointed. Food is tired, quality is food is low, staff appear unhappy, or they are new and get everything wrong - of the last 3 times we've gone we've been dissappointed every time...

Once a year...
Submitted Thursday, August 27, 2009 - 3:09pm [Dine in]

Once a year I use my Entertainment Book coupon and every year it is the same... This is a local place for me, but not worth going to without it being 2 for one. Their antipasto plate is good (with salami, olives etc), pasta just okay - I've never had a meal that I raved about i.e. the food is nothing special - I make better myself. The owner is quite congenial, the rest of the serving staff okay
