Liked Old Location Better
Submitted Thursday, May 21, 2009 - 6:08pm [Dine in]

Visited the Irish Heather since it's moved a few times now. While it's very pretty, the new Heather has lost its personality. The old Heather is clearly dead and gone, and they are looking for a different clientelle than me. I loved to go hang out all night drinking and meeting new people.
Now it feels to unfriendly and anti social. I havent eaten in the new version, as the menu doesnt really appeal. But regrettably I don't think I will be returning, as it no longer has that certain something it once had.

Great Lamb Special
Submitted Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 11:48am [Dine in]

Well, we generally visit memphis once a week now. We've been a few times when they've had Lamb Sandwich on special, and it is fabulous. I think they should put it on their menu, and I've told them this many times. It is the best meal I've had there.
Sevice has improved a little, but still essentially feel like they're just retail clerks ringing you through.
But they certainly make for an excellent lunch spot, especailly when 2 can eat for under $25 including tax and tip.

Wonderful Dining
Submitted Sunday, July 6, 2008 - 11:22am [Dine in]

I don't know if it's authentic, and I don't really care. I've had the vindaloo, the butter chicken, the chicken tikka, samosas. Over a number of visits over a few months. Everything is absolutely delicious. I love the atmosphere of the room, wonderful, elegant feel.
The service is very efficient and organized, but regrettably not very friendly. This is the only area I think they could improve upon. I think they are trying to be too much like earls (I hate earls). I like service to be friendly and sociable, maybe I'm unusual that way.
But the service is still well above average, and the food is spectacular. Reasonable prices.

I am sure I will return many times.

Nice Ambiance, Terrible Execution
Submitted Friday, June 20, 2008 - 10:56am [Dine in]

Well, I have to admit we've returned to this pub multiple times. It has a great feel to the room. Very cozy, neighborhood pub. Sadly, that's where it seems to end. The food is terrible, even if you give it concessions for being a pub, it's still terrible. The chicken is obviously pumped full of water...the water actually squished out of it as I bit into it. The burger, which should be impossible to do poorly, was horrendous. The meat tastes old, full of filler, cheap and frozen. Ontop of that burnt to hell, bitter char. The bun is a cheap Safeway bun. Probably already stale before they even get it.
Service is average, and the drinks are ok.
I would recommend this place to go watch soccer, or hockey next season, but absolutely DO NOT eat ANYTHING here. They obviously dont know how to cook, which means they probably dont know about food safey either.
I know I will return, but I will never eat here again.

What Happened to This Place?
Submitted Sunday, April 13, 2008 - 11:48am [Dine in]

Ok, I admit, I'm old. I can remember going to this place in the 90s and thought it was amazing. The food, the service, both were impressive.
Maybe, I've just gotten 10 years older, and my demands are greater? I don't think so. I love everything from the diviest greasy spoon, to fine dining. But it's still got to taste good.
The burger, my safe choice when I can't find anything on a menu that jumps out at me, was horrendous. What sort of cheap meat do they use? Fries were greasy and burnt and cold!
Getting service was like pulling teeth. I'm guessing they really don't give a damn, the people come no matter what, and spend their money. The owners don't want to spend the money to provide quality. From the look of things, I don;t think Malones has much life left in it.

Another Terrible Burger!
Submitted Saturday, April 5, 2008 - 5:03pm [Dine in]

Once upon a time, I believed there was no such thing as a bad burger. Until recently, it seemed true. But visits to both here and Vera's have prooved me wrong.
The food here is obviously the least important part of the business. It looks like a nice homage to old diners. Set up as a fast food joint though. But it took 15 minutes to get my burger. There were no other orders in. I considered leaving but since you have to pay first, I felt trapped.
The burger is dry, bland and flavourless.
It isn't that difficult to make a nice burger. Whoever manages these places should look at fixing them. I'm sure people will start to realise how bad the food is here, and what a rip off it is.

Great Night Spot
Submitted Wednesday, February 27, 2008 - 3:51pm [Dine in]

I'm shocked to see so many bad reviews for Barney. I admit I have not been in for brunch, but I don't do brunch, so I don't really care about that.
I have come here for a late night dinner several times. Admittedly the first time came about as we tried to find somewhere for dinner, several places were closed, and it came down to Red Door and Barneys. Since we've dined at Red Door before and hated it, the choice seemed obvious.
And I am glad to have finally discoverd this place. The music is upbeat and energetic, at the perfect level. The room is full of energy.
Service was very friendly, and efficient. I've had several different items from the menu now: Pad Thai, Butter Chicken, Quesa. Everything has been exceptional every time.
Based on my experience, and all the others on here, perhaps Barneys is a better dinner haunt than brunch.

Very Good Experience
Submitted Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 3:21pm [Dine in]

I have dined here a couple of times, when we're hanging around downtown. I have found the service to be well above average, and very helpful. The food is wonderful mediteranean style fare, and priced comparably to everywhere else in the area.
I notice previous reviewer upset that they charge for cutting their cake. I know from experience that is common practice. And it makes sense to me. The restaurant is not a free service, they are in business.
This isnt my favourite place around, but I am sure I will return again.

Vera's Please Listen!
Submitted Friday, January 18, 2008 - 6:08pm [Dine in]

Well, I have tried this location 3 times now. And I have given up on Vera's. It has been bad every single time. I have no idea what bogus marketing campaign earned them the "Best Burger" category. I can name at least a dozen places in Kitsilano alone with far superiour burgers. They taste dry cheap and frozen...though they claim to make them fresh in house...if they do, they're doing something seriously wrong to it.
The service staff is extremely unhelpful, and uninterested in the customer. No help in figuring out what to order, or how to order...you have to create your own burgers...which I guess is fine if you know exactly what you want. But I find it tedious to list off the six or seven ingredients I want, and feel pressured by the staff to hurry up. I end up getting less of a burger than I want.
The system is poor and inefficient, the staff are rude and incosiderate, the food is cheap, and not much better than Macdonalds. And you pay as much for a burger here as you would at a full service restaurant....how about some service then!

Sad Disappointment
Submitted Thursday, December 27, 2007 - 8:13pm [Dine in]

Well, this should have been an easy sell for me. I love both authentic asian cusines, and westernized asian fare. This tries to walk the line, but seems to fail in the most important aspect, quality.
The Thai Chicken dish used very watery chicken. I understand chicken is expensive, but I'd rather pay a couple dollars more for water that hasn't been pumped up with salt water.
The raita tasted very not fresh, and the bread was burnt.
Rice was fine, but came out cold, twice.
Service, was average...similar to earls or milestones service. That brings me to the ambiance. Sadly the place feels like a Milestones doing an asian theme night. Definitely not much effort was made here to give it a unique feel.
All around this is a mediocre attempt at anything. I've had better food, service, and experience in some cheap mom and pop asian restaurants than here. They missed the mark on all points.

Above Average Pub
Submitted Thursday, December 6, 2007 - 5:50pm [Dine in]

I think some previous reviewers don't realise the sort of establishment they're attending. While the frog isn't the best pub in the area, it is definitely very good. The burger I had was very good, yes a little greasy and soggy, but delicious.
I would expect a good burger to be a little messy, and it was, but not overly so.
The service is friendly and attentive, felt like a regular on my first visit.
I'm sure we will be here again, just realise, the sort of place you're going to, dont expect fine dining food in a pub for so cheap either.

An Earls by any other name...
Submitted Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 1:56pm [Dine in]

Ok, I really don't see how this is a Mediteranean restaurant. The menu reads almost just like Earls. I had there burger, and it wasnt bad, except there was either too much meat or too little bread, as by the time I finished the bun, I still had a 1/3 of my patty left. It tasted like your average frozen patty, nothing exciting here. My wife had souvlaki, which tasted comparable to the little souvlaki stand souvlakis, though double the price.
Service is horrendous here. The place was totally empty, and we stood at the front door for several minutes with the host waiting to be sat. Then it took another 5 minutes for our server to come visit us, Another 15 minutes to get our drinks, another 15 to get our food, and finally another 20 minutes for our bill. By the end of our meal there was only 5 other tables in the entire place.
We could see the service staff, 'busy' hangning out and chatting, and the manager in the middle of the gang.
The only thing this place has is its expensive room. You can save a fortune and go across the street to Veras or Memphis, and get better service and equal, if not better, quality food.
I don't think I will try a return visit here.

Awesome Pub Food, & Service..odd space
Submitted Friday, November 16, 2007 - 6:12pm [Dine in]

Well, here's another hit on west 4th. I am so glad I've moved into this area, there are so many great pub/bar places.
The burger here, while very weird looking, tastes amazing. With lots of dijon mustard and old cheddar. Its ona ciabata bun which is really dense and nice.
My gf had their club house sandwich, also served on that ciabata. I tried some and it was very sweet, and with fresh grilled turkey...different than most clubhouses.
We were served by the bartender who was really friendly and service was prompt.
The only negative about the place would be the dated room. Looks like its been around for a very long time, and needs a facelift...but besides that, they have the hockey games, so at night, when its full, no problem...will definitely be back.

Great Bar, but Service Issues
Submitted Wednesday, November 14, 2007 - 7:26pm [Dine in]

The pizzas here are fantastic. We shared a selection. The bbq chicken is amazing. The smoke salmon is delicious. I love the feel of the room. Its a great hang out space.
The only lack is the service. Indifferent, and cold. I guess this could be an ongoing problem in Vancouver, but surely there must be some people who enjoy working in the bars here.
If they can fix the service, this could easily become a regular haunt....for now, I'll keep looking, but will return for another pizza I'm sure.

The social house is a great name for this place. Its an excellent place to hangout on a Friday night with some friends and chat. THe burgers are excellent. I dont know what it is but that bun kicks butt!
The room is really cool and styled, a little noisy though when its busy, but its still a small room, so not too bad.
Service is the usual decent but not amazing. Friendly, good eye contact, and quick drink service...
Have been here a few times already, and will definitely be back.

Submitted Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - 10:29am [Dine in]

Saw all the great reviews on here, and were in the mood for steak, so off we went. How unbelievably disappointing! We both had striploin steaks. And they were completely bland and flavourless. Mine was cooked fine, my partner's was over cooked slightly.
Service was comparable to a milestones or earls, and considering the price point that is not acceptable. We weren't drinking and our bill was almost $200 for 2 people. Not worth the price and not worth the raves.

Should Treat Customers with Respect
Submitted Sunday, June 17, 2007 - 1:43pm [Dine in]

In many ways I agree with grnbastard's review of Il Giardino. The food here is very good, though a bit pricey. But very good Italian food is very easy to find in this city. What really matters is service.
I'm sure if I was some celebrity, or rich regular, we would have had better service. It looks like for anyone of us regular people, we should feel privileged just to be allowed in the doors of this place.
The waiter was rude, rushed us for our orders. When we wanted to order more drinks, we could not get attention-he was busy with another table of apparent high rollers-as he had mentioned to us. They were apparently some very rich regulars that demand extra special attention, so we have to pay for it.
I will never return here, as I don't really enjoy being made to feel like I'm a nobody-especially when I'm paying for it.

Another Vote on Average...
Submitted Monday, May 28, 2007 - 4:56pm [Dine in]

I agree with the previous review. The food was not that much different than other indian places, except maybe smaller portions and higher prices.
2 of us went, and we were also given the, "our plates are designed for sharing". So we thought great, yet with 2 of us and 4 items for sharing, we were left very hungry at the end of our meal...we actually went to another restaurant and got even more food afterwards.
I can think of at least 3 other indian restaurants in Van I'd rather dine at, and my bill will be maybe 2/3 what it was here, and not have left overs for the next day.
I was disappointed with this experience, hopefully it was Vij's day off, and not indicative of the regular quality of food. May give it another try in future.

Inconsistent is the Problem
Submitted Wednesday, May 2, 2007 - 3:41pm [Dine in]

I have had both the pleasure, and displeasure to dine here on multiple occasions. We have had everything from terrible, to amazing service. We've had spectacular food, to dry tough flavourless food.
We now only go during the off season. We have noticed a pattern, and it seems to be when we go on a quiet day in the off season when everything is good. I guess when tourist season kicks in they arent able to handle the volume well.
Also, in the off season weekdays we've been there a couple times where there is only one other table in the place, which makes it a lot more intimate and romantic. Its our private dinner.
So, during the summer months, I say avoid this place, leave it for the tourists, and visit in on a rainy monday in November, it will be worth it...and I think the view is nicer then anyways.

Its AYCE, What do you expect?
Submitted Monday, April 30, 2007 - 11:17am [Dine in]

Another place getting knocked down for being exactly what it can be. All you Can eat seafood. Let's think about it, seafood is expensive, so you know a cheap all you can eat is NOT going to be phenomenal quality. For what it is it is very good. They do a great job of making cheap ingredients enjoyable.
Yes the service of the courses is slow, but again I'm sure its intentional to avoid people who are going order crazy, and end up not eating half of the food. I've seen friends do that, and the waste just pisses me off. With all you can eat, I feel if you order it, you better damn well eat it. As our mothers used to say, "Think of all the starving children in Africa."
I think this place is worth it for the price. You need to adjust your expectations based on what you're willing to pay for.
