This used to be one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Dimsum was always great. Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing dinner there about 6 months ago. There were 9 of us to celebrate a baby's birthday. We ordered from a set menu thinking it would be simple and fast.
Our first disappointment came when our waiter told us that the vegetable dish on the set menu wasn't available. Why promote it if you can't provide it we thought. Anyway we agreed to take the next best choice, a cheaper alternative only to discover a little later a waiter taking the exact same dish to another table. Bait and switch or running out of vegetables, either way not good for a high end restaurant.
A worse disappointment came later when our fish dish arrived. Normally the waiter would cut up the fish at the table but it didn't happen this time. So I grab a fork and chopsticks to cut up the fish. Try as I could I just could not cut it up. I flipped the fish and same thing. It was rock hard! So I called he waiter over and told him that I couldn't cut it, that it was too hard. Without even attempting to cut the fish the waiter took it back to the kitchen and about 10 minutes later we get the same fish back, no explanation or apologies. We think the cook in his haste had cooked a frozen fish.
We haven't been back since. Dimsum may be okay but after what happened why take the risk. Golden Ocean is the only large Chinese restaurant in Kerrisdale so I guess without competition they don't care anymore with quality. That is a pity.
If you are willing to venture out a bit, Dynasty on Broadway near Cambie and Red Star near Granville and 65th Avenue are superb.
