Kilala Sushi Bar4749 East Hastings Street, Burnaby
Very good Take Out Sushi in N. Bby
Submitted Friday, November 3, 2006 - 3:32pm [Dine in]

If you live in North Burnaby or pass by Happy Honda on E. Hastings in Bby on the way home, then Kilala is the place for take out sushi. This small, very clean restaurant owned by a friendly Japanese couple serves very good fresh sushi at reasonable prices. Eat-in seating is limited to 1 large and 4 small tables along with 5 stools at the sushi bar. Basically, you order, pay and wait for your food so if you are looking for ambience or in a rush, this is not the place. Best to call ahead and place your order since the husband is the only sushi chef.

The menu consists of some combo's and trays, sushi bowls, rolls, nigiri and sashimi. The saba and unagi nigiri sushi are the best that I have eaten. The attention to the quality of the fish is evident here compared to other take out places in North Burnaby.

Kura Japanese Restaurant4300 Kingsway, #2, Burnaby
Authentic as it gets!
Submitted Friday, August 11, 2006 - 5:49pm [Dine in]

My boss from Toronto, who is Japanese, wanted to eat sushi for lunch so I thought of Kura hoping they would not disappoint and they did not.

We arrived around 11:40 am prior to the lunch rush and got seated in a booth right away. I noticed other booths were already reserved which is a good sign. By noon, all the tables were full.

Extensive selection on the menu from appys, sashimi, rolls and robata. The five of us praised the freshness, taste and quality of the fish and rice. Prices are higher than surrounding sushi restaurants but the quality and presentation reflect the price. Definitely not for the buffet crowd aka Fish on Rice.

Service was efficient and friendly. An additional server to handle lunch rush would be beneficial.

Overall, very satisfying lunch experience.

Dragon Ball Tea House1007 W King Edward, Vancouver
Twice weekly bubble tea fix at Dragon Ball
Submitted Friday, June 16, 2006 - 2:18pm [Dine in]

After trying countless other bubble tea houses in the Lower Mainland, Dragon Ball's fresh fruit bubble tea selection cannot be beat for quality and price - $3.75 including pearls. The strawberry and mango fresh fruit is a must for any bubble tea fanatic. Real milk is used if so desired. Once you have tried the fresh fruit with real milk, you will never go back to powdered flavours.

The place is small and designed with take out in mind so lineups do occur after 9 pm on any nights. Service will be slower, but well worth the wait. Tip: bring a small box if you plan to order 4 or more drinks for take out. Easier than using plastic bags.

Big Fish Sushi3311 East Broadway, Vancouver
Big Fish......No food and indifferent service
Submitted Thursday, February 23, 2006 - 3:11pm [Dine in]

I drive by Big Fish to and from work each day and suggested to my colleagues to give this restaurant a try for lunch.

Food - After waiting for 1 hour for our order for 8 people, only the miso soup and two box lunches appeared. The waitress did not provide any explanation as to why our order took so longer except to say that the deep fryer was broken. The food in the boxes was well presented, fresh, but lacking in favour to the point of blandness. Batter too heavy in the tempura. Can't comment on the rest of our order that did not appear.

Service - Our waitress appeared to be newly hired and did not know the menu when we placed our order. No updates was provided at any time on why our order was taking so long. It appeared the restaurant was only interested in seeing us not leaving.

Ambiance - A typical small neighborhood restaurant that was newly renovated. Sun chairs and wooden benches seemed out of place for a sushi restaurant.

Overall, very disappointing first visit. Our group left after waiting over 1 hour to get back to work. McDonald's never tasted better. This restaurant is not setup to handle large groups at lunch hour. Felt sorry for the sushi chef who appeared frustrated with the kitchen staff.
