EXCELLENT Sushi Amongst Sea Of AYCEs
Submitted Wednesday, February 24, 2010 - 7:20am

Do you want really FRESH, TASTY sushi? Do you want hand-formed nigiri mastered by Japanese sushi-chef Are you sick-n-tired of all the Chapanese AYCE places that serve volume VS quality?

GO no further than this lil' joint. It is on the back side of the strip mall right close to the Canada line terminus station. While certainly not fancy - they serve some of the best sushi in town (IMHO) and the prices are very reasonable.

Give this place a try - you'll be back (many times) Notable faves: Panko Dynamite roll, Yam tempura roll, BC roll, Salmon & Toro nigiri and soft shell crab.

YUM!

GOOD Fish & Chips
Submitted Wednesday, September 9, 2009 - 9:32am

Come here for decent fish & chips with good variety (Cod, Halibut or Salmon) we prefer the halibut. Make sure you specify LITE batter for a better/less-greasy/less-filling fish. LUV the freshly "chipped" potatoes although the lil' bits are frustrating (2 dredge in ketchup). Coleslaw, also very nice.

We come here often - but beware of line-ups on weekends especially if weather is nice

MORE Glitz Than Substance
Submitted Wednesday, September 9, 2009 - 8:47am

While Gotham's may be the place that all the "beautiful" people and gangsters hang out - give it a miss if you're searching for an EXCEPTIONAL steak. At an average of $40+ per steal ala carte - you would think that they were five-star however after ordering their rib eye - I was somewhat disappointed. Don't get me wrong - the beef was decent however they used way 2 much salt (as this was the only taste that stood out). The sides were just average.

IMHO, Hy's is still the premium steakhouse in Vancouver. Among the finest are Metropolitan Grill in Seattle, WA and Sullivan's in Palm Springs, CA

Would probably never go back since there is ust NOT enuff substance to warrant a return-visit

NICE Shawarma - GOOD Valu
Submitted Monday, May 4, 2009 - 9:29am

This place is one of my faves when the mood for Shawarma hits and you happen to be in Kitsilano (Broadway - 10th Ave & Alma).

NICE tasty Shawarma in a non-descript environment. GOOD valu and fast service lend to the overall efficiency. WAY better than fast food and better-balanced than slice-O-pizza places.

NOT authentic Mexican
Submitted Monday, March 2, 2009 - 2:24pm

This place is definitely NOT Mexican! It is not even what i would call Tex-Mex (American influenced Mexican).

I have been to places in US like Chipotles, and Baja Fresh and this place tries to emulate them but comes up short. locally - they do not stack up VS The Red Burrito.

Best a miss.....

GOOD Japanese made by Japanese
Submitted Monday, March 2, 2009 - 2:11pm

Here's a lil' secret - GOOD sushi is nearly always made by Japanese sushi-chefs. In a sea of AYCE (all you can eat) sushi restaurants in Richmond - the stand outs all employ Japanese talent (this one and Sakura Sushi #3 & Cook).

This one is similar to Fujiya (as another member pointed out) and offers similar value & freshness.

I'lll be back!!!

VERY good Italian - Yaletown pricing
Submitted Friday, February 20, 2009 - 9:48am

Had the opportunity to dine in their private wine room. I was with some company executives and they went all-out:. The food and wine were excellent. Very authentic, tasty and left you wanting more.

YES - it is in Yaletown and pricing and value are reflective BUT hey it's not Cactus Club, Joeys or Milestones - this is TRUE fine dining!

kinda like fried chicken
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 10:09am

eating here is kinda like fried chicken - the 1st bite is good and then it's all downhill from there. as a matter fact - it is difficult to discern the delicate tastes that truly good sushi embarks. there's also the likelihood of OVER-consumption.

and again - like "fried chicken" is best enjoyed in moderation. good to go with guys with large appetites and small tastebuds

best sushi is prepared by Japanese sushi chefs and not made "ice-cube" style but hey it's AYCE

GOOD - tasty food - friendly staff
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 9:54am

this place ROCKs - a nice place to go if you wanna "kick-it-up-a-notch". We relied on the staff for their recommendations/suggestion and they were spectacular.

We went with a chicken, a beef, a pork, and a vegetable dish ALL cooked to 2.5 star spicy - just RITE!

The beers are kold and the prices fair - definitely a MUST-try. These Chi-Indian places are popular in TO and glad they're conin' here

decent pasta in homey environment
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 9:42am

this place serves decent pasta and is a neat place to share/split some dishes. The calamari was a good starter.

good food and offered good valu - better than some of the pricier joints I've been 2 which often charged more money for less quality/quantity

central Burnaby location and decent pricing are nice also

GREAT commercials - mediocre food
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 9:18am

The things that the Keg does well is produce commercials and "price-aggressively" as well as training staff to solicit good tips.

What they do POOR is prepare quality-tasty food and get my simple orders - correct. I have received the wrong steak, over-cooked, and poor quality meals here 2 many times.

The ONLY reason I go is to accommodate friends who insist - otherwise I suggest a MISS. Had better steaks from pizza-houses!

poor policies - NOT good 4 biz
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 9:10am

I used 2 work close -by and went to this place often. it "used-2-B" quite good and a nice dining experience. Then the owner must of recognized that their biz was good enuff and started to scale-back. BIG mistake

They imposed mandatory fixed menus and built-in gratuities whenever there was holidays (X-mas, mother's day, etc) and this is BS!

They ran a good business into the ground - SHAME ON THEM! I would go across the street to Taverna Greka or pass the all-together and go to My Favorite Greek Taverna @ Brunette & Lougheed

same old - same old
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 8:58am

This place was a booming biz during the 80s-90s and really lost touch with what people were seeking in the dine-out experience. As the demographics of Steveston changed - this restaurant did NOT and was easily passed-over in lieu of newer-tastier Greek spots like George's or Kisamos.

I was hoping the new management would rejuvenate BUT this did not happen. The new owner seems like he's been watchin' too many episodes of the Sopranos and comes across as a blo-hard (show me - don't tell me).

Same old dated interior and menu. Best 2 miss if you're looking for nice surroundings and good food

GREAT view - Yaletown pricing
Submitted Friday, February 13, 2009 - 8:48am

It's always nice to have a fresh-face in historic Steveston and this place is very appealing however their prices seem rather ambitious. I suppose they're trying to capture the new-yuppie $$ - however Steveston/Richmond is still the burbs and Yaletown pricing is inappropriate.

This dishes were nice and tasty (kinda like a Cactus Club/Earls/Joeys) but nothing exceptional. Stil kinda neat place to go and socialize (blankets for deck patrons are a nice touch)

Probably hippest new spot in Steveston

OVERATED - and snobby management
Submitted Friday, February 13, 2009 - 8:37am

Took my family here for mother's day brunch and was VERY disappointed with their offer - however they do know how to charge.

We were ushered to an upstairs room that looked like a cash-grab for the restaurant and did not have the same elegance as their main dining room. They ran out of the smoked salmon - however the server did go downstairs to retrieve some from the main dining room. This reinforced my notion that we were being treated like second-class diners.

After I paid the bill and left - I contacted restaurant management and let them know of my dissatisfaction - at spending $400+ and they could care less. They actually came across CONDESCENDING.

Will NEVER return and have no good things to say about my experience

VERY good Greek
Submitted Friday, February 13, 2009 - 8:29am

With so may waana-be Greek restaurants and many of them being mediocre - it is NICE to come across one that surprises with quality & quantity.

While decor is somewhat "tacky" the food and service are not. We shared a Calamari appetizer (very generous & yummy) and split a roast lamb dinner. This was plenty for my wife and I.

This place is MUCH better than Kefi and should be considered a must-dine when the moods strikes.

Opa - we'll be back!

good NOT great
Submitted Thursday, February 12, 2009 - 9:17pm

I have been to many Greek restaurants and this one was close to the bottom when it came to food quality & quantity. I normally LUV the roast lamb @ Greek restaurants but this place had very little meat and a whole lot of fatty meat and had the shoulder knuckle which of course is inedible.

If you are choosing Greek - I would suggest Alfa (which is MUCH better) or go into Richmond Felicos, Kisamos, or The Mad Greek.

Disappointed and won't be back
