The worst of the 3 locations
Submitted Tuesday, February 6, 2007 - 10:18am [Dine in]

Despite being the newest one of the 3 Tropikas (Cambie is the original, Robson the second newest) I think it's the worst of the bunch. Food is still good and on par with the other restaurants, but the service is spotty (tends to be slow and/or they ignore you).

The biggest peeve I have with this location are: The room temperature and insufficient bathrooms. The A/C all over the restaurant is freezing! All the times I've been there, everyone at our table kept their jackets on. And despite being rather new, the bathrooms are tiny.

Nothing remarkable, except for the remarkably bad service
Submitted Friday, January 12, 2007 - 9:38am [Dine in]

"Mediterranean Grill"? I didn't notice anything particularly Mediterranean, just the usual Cactus Club/Milestone's/Earl's/Moxie's type fare.

The Good: Food is relatively decent, roughly on par with those other restaurants. The portions (with the exception of the tiny Lobster Ravioli) are quite generous. Decent, but nothing particularly memorable. The restaurant is generally well designed, nice ambiance with dark woods and dim lights (there were a few in my party though, that thought the lighting had a bit of an eerie effect after a while). The decor is very similar to the Cactus Club in downtown Victoria.

The Bad: Service was very bad. We reserved a party of 10 and they seated us at 3 separate small tables instead of the long banquet. When an extra guest arrived, there was a big fuss about bringing over an extra chair. Our server was completely scatterbrained throughout the meal, like bringing 3 plates (for appy sharing) when the table had 4 people; asking us if we wanted to pepper a shared chip dip plate, but then didn't offer any pepper when entrees came; didn't take away our empty cocktail glasses all night, or ask us if we wanted more drinks; didn't refill our water glasses all night; gave us the wrong cocktails (we ordered a drink and he decided to take liberties with our order); gave us spoons instead of forks to eat cake; overcharged our bill with items we never ordered; insinuated that one table in our party (they left early) skipped out on their bill when he didn't check their credit card payments.

Phew!

In short: nothing special, horrible service, will not be coming back!

Surprisingly Solid Food for AYCE
Submitted Monday, November 20, 2006 - 5:03pm [Dine in]

I guess this is where everyone goes for AYCE, and I can see why. Went with a group of 6 for late-night dinner and everything we ordered was good. The food came quickly (some AYCE places like to dawdle so that you run out of time) and the sashimi was fresh, rolls were good (not too much rice), motoyaki and gyoza were not as greasy or burnt--something I expect from other AYCE restaurants. The menu had a good variety too. The only thing that was sub-par was the chopped scallop cone. Plenty of scallop, but just not quite as fresh as everything else.

Contrary to the last review, there is indeed a limit for sashimi (for late-night anyways). Max 2 orders of 3 pieces per person, which was enough for me. The only downside is that this place is VERY popular and the wait can be long. Be prepared to wait.

I rated the food here at 3 stars, comparing it to the range of all the Japanese dining I've ever had...but compared to other AYCE places I'd give it 5.

La Bodega Restaurant & Tapa Bar1277 Howe Street, Vancouver
Overrated and Mediocre
Submitted Saturday, November 4, 2006 - 11:01am [Dine in]

I've been here a few times with various friends who love La Bodega, but I've yet to have a good meal here. I've had REAL Spanish food and this is nowhere close to it. Unfortunately, this seems to be the "best" in Spanish food that Vancouver has to offer.

The food is mostly mediocre and the tapas portions are not the most generous. The ceviche and the rabbit may be the best items on the menu, and even then they are nothing special. Beware if you come in a large group, as they will have trouble seating and serving you.

Poor service ruins an otherwise good place
Submitted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 - 12:11pm [Dine in]

Pros: Great ambience, good music (for once they don't play annoying house music or Top 40 stuff), solid food.

Cons: I had exactly the same experience as the reviewers below. I have been here twice. The first time I was here we were a large group and the restaurant was maybe half full because of us. When we got tired of waiting, we had to go down to the bar and ask the waitress there to order us drinks and food. We also had to go down to the bar in order to pay our bill.

The second time I came with just a friend and were seated in the slightly elevated seating area. We were on a bit of a time crunch and couldn't spend more than 1.5 hour on lunch (we should've known better than to come here) and we kindly informed our server that we under some time constraints and we would like to order right away. She still insisted on leaving us with our menus and promised to return. She never did.

When we got sick of waiting, we managed to flag another waitress down. We told her we'd been waiting for our waitress for some time to order. She replied, "Well you couldn't have been waiting THAT long, I was just up here"--a total lie. We'd been sitting for 20 minutes and NOBODY even came to our area.

Another waitress ended up serving us, although halfway through our meal I saw her leaving her shift without a word to us or another server. After we finished eating we got sick of waiting and paid our bill at the cash register. What a shame of a good space. The food is solid, but nothing special that would make me ever come back again.

Stay away!
Submitted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 - 11:44am [Dine in]

With so many other cheap sushi options in Vancouver, I see no reason why anybody should eat here. Robson Sushi has some of the worst service I've ever experienced, and I don't even expect much from the servers at these kinds of places.

First off, after we were seated we were all but ignored from our waitress. We had to flag several other servers down before someone would take our order. During the course of our meal, nobody came to refill our tea despite our requests. At the end of the meal we got sick of waiting for the waitress to give us our bill so we went up to the cashier to pay. Upon presenting the bill, she glared at us and said loudly, "You know, the tips are not included in the bill!"

Great food vs. poor service
Submitted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 - 11:38am [Dine in]

Contrary to some of the reviews below, I've found that the food quality has remained excellent and the portions about the same. Pho Hoang still makes some of the best spring rolls in town and their pho broth is still better than almost any other pho place. However, the service is definitely hit or miss. If you're lucky, you'll get competent (don't hold your breath for friendly) service. Last time we were there with a group of four, nobody came to take our orders for 45 minutes. After which time we waited another half an hour for the first dish to arrive. One of our orders was completely wrong, and we didn't get our spring rolls until the very end of our meal, despite the fact that other tables who were seated later than us received their meals as well as their spring rolls ahead of us.

Great new location, but service is lacking
Submitted Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 11:51am [Dine in]

We came here on a Friday night, but the restaurant was barely half full. Same ol' good food & drinks as most of the other Earl's locations, but I had an issue with the service.

So we were seated, our waitress came around to take our drink orders. I was the only one in our party not ordering any liquor and only asked for water and the dessert menu. After coming back 20 minutes later with everyone's drinks, she told me she would get my glass of water next. She then disappears for half an hour. She comes back after this and gets everyone's second round, TOTALLY ignores me and whisks off before I even get to ask her about my water or the fact that I wanted to order dessert. A few minutes later, she returns with second rounds for everyone and I FINALLY get to order dessert and remind her about my water, both of which I end up receiving 15 minutes later.

At first I thought they were understaffed that night, but there were 2 other waitresses standing around chatting with the hostess at the front of the restaurant.

The new location is great to look at. Maybe I just had unfortunate luck that night with our server. Oh, and the music is generic house/dance music awful.

Good only for late night
Submitted Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 11:29am [Dine in]

Food quality is mediocre, service is poor, and even though I once found a whole dead fly in the bottom of my bowl of congee, they only offered a 50% discount off that dish.

But I guess there are few places open late at night in that area, so go here if you must.

Cheap sushi, decent quality
Submitted Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 11:26am [Dine in]

Skip Samurai Sushi, head over here instead. This and the Kerrisdale location are much better at serving big sushi of decent quality, and at a great price. This place looks much cleaner, the fish is much fresher, and the service is surprisingly good (I usually expect zero service from these kinds of places).

Yikes
Submitted Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 11:22am [Dine in]

There was a time when I used to come here on the odd occasion, but I haven't stepped foot in this place for a good 2 years now. Sure, it's cheap and yeah, the portions are obscenely large, but just take a look around. The place is always warm with people, with too many cooks crammed behind the counter, all preparing WARM sushi. The kitchen looks grubby, and really, I wouldn't eat anything raw here. The sashimi is huge, but never tastes remotely fresh. One time there were even bones in my sashimi and the tuna was so fishy I couldn't even eat it.

The restaurant is too small and uncomfortable to dine in, so most people take out. Lineups have people jammed out the door most of the time. If you're really desperate for cheap sushi in large sizes, go to Sushi King House instead. At least their fish is edible.

Great, but used to be better
Submitted Thursday, October 12, 2006 - 11:11am [Dine in]

They've recently updated their menu and with the addition of some new items, prices on certain old favorites have gone up. Food portions have also shrank a little overall (noticeably, the delicious Tuna Tempura). I know because I used to come here regularly. The food is still remains excellent, but the service remains poor, with a few exceptions. Not really a family place, as the music is loud and the videos playing on the TVs can be racy. Overall, a great place for funky sushi, if you don't mind waiting in line Friday and Saturday nights and putting up with slow service.

Love this place. I've been to most of the branches. The food is great and definitely something I miss when I'm away! I always make sure that I go when I go back.
Ambiance depends since other locations are really nice especially the downtown branch else it's all good and decent since I'm not there for the decor but for the food! Service is also good since they are all very helpful and patient with us while we vote on what we want. =P

Good but could be better. Service is the problem especially when the lunch crowd hits. It's suppose to cater to fast service (given that it's a franchise that I've been to in Manila, HKG, etc) but doesn't seem to achieve that for the moment. Manage your time and expectations so as not to really get frustrated with the service.

Love it...wherever it may be - US, HKG, Canada...love it more than Black Angus since the Ambiance is good. I love the service and the recommendations. It's a knotch up to all those steak restos around town. Definitely something that you only go though on special occasions since it's not for the weak wallets.

Submitted Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 9:21pm [Dine in]

The food is nice but portions are smaller than expected. Expensive for a 5-course meal but definitely a really nice and romantic place. I gotta give props for the place though and the martini's are a must. Service was good but not overly great. Be sure to re-fill your wallets with some extra cash for those "extra servings". I don't think I got the "bang" for my buck when I last visited...that was 5/6 years ago already. I'm too traumatized from my first visit. My friends didn't like it either with the food and price deal.

A friend of mine took me here. I was pretty impressed with everything. There were quite a few choice dishes to choose from so it was hard but we ended up with the tuna sashimi on some ranch sauce (really nice), rice in stone pot, and grilled salmon. Love them all. I love the shared tables environment and you can totally see how hippie the crowd was. A Japanese Resto for a White Chief...even more impressive! Servers were great and nice but definitely a busy place so give a bit of patience on the side. Better go early so you wouldn't have to wait the lines.
