Came here for dine-out as a party of 3, trying out their dinner menu for $38.
Once we sat down, the server had already made us feel uncomfortable with a long awkward silence after he started a conversation he couldn't even continue himself; his solution? Just slowly slip away ... What kind of person does that?! You think we don't see you??
For drinks, we started with water; but since I was coming down with a cold, I asked specifically for hot water with a bit of lemon and honey. This is something that is EASILY served with a POLITE smile everywhere - e.g. Earls, Joey's, Cactus Club .. etc. Either he was confused or he seemed too much of a bother for him to do so .. but in the end, I got what I asked for. Throughout the meal, food was quite salty; although we asked for more water, they only refilled our glasses once. We were literally dying from thirst.
As appetizer, I had the "Roasted Parsnip And Sea Scallop Chowder double smoked bacon, old bay spice"; a bit salty but it was .. good. Next, I had the "Pan Seared Icy Water Arctic Char parsnip brandade, grain mustard emulsion". The Arctic Char was very well done, possibly the only thing I enjoyed this meal; soft in texture and crispy on the skin. The brandade, however, tasted very odd ("like old furniture") with the mustard. *shiver* Finally came the dessert, "Lemon Bavarois cranberry ice cream". The Lemon Bavarois was ok, nothing special. The so-called "Cranberry Ice Cream" was really a cranberry sorbet, rather bitter actually. The sorbet was served in the shape of the ball for me, still intact. But for the 2 others who were dining with me, their sorbet was half way through MELTING, running all over the plate. It's ridiculous! Serving something that is already half melted is an AUTOMATIC FAIL FOR THE CHEF, and they even DARE to bring that piece of crap out to serve??! This dessert was served to us by one of the busboys, and when we were in the mid questioning the quality of the melting sorbet, the busboy, like our server earlier, just slipped away. Unbelievable.
When the bill came, I just thought .. I'd be kind anyway - it's dine-out, despite the poor service I got, I should still give them a fair amount tips (15%). Boy was I WRONG! The bill came up to be $135, and we split the bill amongst ourselves. I was paying for another person as well, so I told the server the exact amount including the 15% tips and had it charge to my Visa first. He looked very puzzled even though I had already told him I was paying for 2 people. Then, he took out his ordering notepad (I CAN"T BELIEVE IT) and started doing the math, even asking me to use the calculator on my phone to help him out!! He even continuously SHOVED the notepad in my face to show me his math. I felt intimidated and accused for not paying enough when there was STILL one person who hasn't paid yet! HELLO? Getting ahead of yourself much??! I was absolutely DISGUSTED by the server's attitude and service towards us; where the exact same server was being the friendliest and jolly guy to the other party of 8/9 beside us (Duh! guaranteed 18% tips!) Regrettingly, the remaining person still gave him the 15% tips as well.
On our way out, we had a chance to speak with the manager about our feedback. He didn't seem like he gave a crap about it though.
Coast Restaurant has unprofessionalism written all over it! I definitely do not recommend this restaurant to anyone, and I will NOT be returning to Coast ever.
