Secret Garden Tea Room, The5559 West Boulevard, Vancouver
delicious breakfast!
Submitted Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - 7:20pm [Dine in]

I know that this place is known for High Tea...but I've actually never been there for High Tea! I have, however, frequently been there for breakfast....and it is AMAZING! The Secret Garden Breakfast Scone (A heart-shaped cheese scone lightly toasted and filled with scrambled eggs and bacon with a side of hasbrowns) is to die for, as is the French Toast Croissant stuffed with cream cheese, apples, and maple. I am always here with a friend, and we usually order one of each and share...these two dishes are so wonderful, I recommend them to EVERYONE!

Every time we've been here the service has been great. Maybe I happen to be there on good days, because according to a lot of other reviews the service isn't great...but I'll take my chances when an astounding selection of wonderful teas and the above mentioned treats are dangled in front of me! This place is really quaint and while a little pricey, it is a nice little treat every so often!

Nat's New York Pizzeria2684 West Broadway St., Vancouver
long-time customer
Submitted Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - 7:08pm [Dine in]

I've been going to Nat's for years...about 10 years now. My mom and I started going regularly on friday nights, and now that I'm living across the country she hasn't been able to give up our friday night ritual! Every time I'm home I buy a whole pile of slices right before I leave and bring them across the country with me and toss them in the freezer as soon as I get home so that I can pull a slice out whenever I need something fast and delicious.

It's true that the final product and the quality of the food goes up and down depending on who's working. In general, the food is amazing. Not just the pizza, but the salads (espeically the greek salad) and the heros (especially the Cold Chicken - amazing!) are really great too!

The service is generally great - Nat and Franco and the boys (and yes, a couple of girls. one of them in particular is pretty fantastic!) are great and you really get to know them when you're a regular customer. There have been a few groups of staff that have moved through there in the time that I've been going, and each group has a bit of a different vibe, but they're all friendly and wacky and sure to put a smile on my face! Nat's is just a casual little 'mom & pop'-style place with crazy chalkboards, decorations, and photos all over the walls and the counters and I wouldn't have it any other way!!!

Salt Tasting Room45 Blood Alley, Vancouver
can't wait to go back!
Submitted Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - 6:49pm [Dine in]

I went to Salt when I was home this August, and it was a really great experience! It was my boyfriend's first visit to Vancouver and we had randomly come across Salt on a TV program we wouldn't usually watch (but as they were covering Vancouver I wanted to see which places they were highlighting!) and we were both really excited to go. Yes, it was tucked away in a sketchy alley...but we knew it was in blood alley so we knew what to expect in terms of the area. It was nice to show my boyfriend around Gastown and then relax for a late lunch/snack in this amazing little hidden gem.

We both did the 3-wine tasting - my boyfriend left it completely up to our server, and I requested certain meats/cheeses and left the wines up to her. Our server was AMAZING - I love it when a server can describe everything on the plate and can answer any questions that you have. The wine and the food was also really great - the pairings were wonderful and it was a refreshing and relaxing way to spend an afternoon with great company in a beautiful space.

Although you could create a wine and cheese and meat tasting at home, I thoroughly enjoyed this experience as I am far from a sommelier and therefore do not usually have six bottles of wine lying around and know how to best pair all of them! I am going to be back in Vancouver next month, and I can't wait to go back to Salt for another easy-going afternoon with a good friend!

Cupcakes on Denman1168 Denman Street, Vancouver
crazy reviews!
Submitted Tuesday, February 17, 2009 - 6:25pm [Dine in]

I have to say that I'm shocked by the reviews here!! I'm from Vancouver but I've moved away, and every time I'm home I make sure to drop by cupcakes - either the original on Denman or the one on Broadway which is closer for me. I have been raving about the cupcakes at Cupcakes (especially the minis!) for a handful of years now, and I'm really surprised that so many people seem to think that they taste the same as grocery store cupcakes! I've tried cupcakes at so many other places, both around vancouver and elsewhere, and I haven't found any cupcakes that come anywhere close to the ones at Cupcakes!! I also don't know anyone who doesn't like Cupcakes - even friends of mine who proclaim that they hate icing can't get enough of the fare at Cupcakes! Sure, if you eat more than one regular size cupcake then the icing is a little much, but try the minis!! They're really the best way to go. Just a couple of bites, you can have two or three and try different flavours and not get overloaded with sweet.

Maybe I've just gone on better days than most of the reviewers here, but for the most part I haven't found the cupcakes to be dry, or too dense (as I have found at other places) and the icing is always amazing, never dried out, and it's actually made of good quality ingredients - butter instead of shortening!!!! (i can pretty much guarantee that the grocery store cupcakes have shortening...do you feel that greasiness on the roof of your mouth? yuck!!)

as far as service is concerned...I have yet to have horrible service, but the service hasn't been so good as to be memorable (apart from once or twice 6 years back...but those people are probably gone now!) They are a little expensive, but not any more than any other little cupcake place! Cupcakes are a bit of a fad, so of course the place is going to be cute and the prices are going to be high!

As far as I'm concerned, Cupcakes is the best cupcake shop Vancouver has to offer.
