Makoto Japanese Restaurant5213 Rumble Street, Burnaby
Japanese Delights
Submitted Sunday, November 7, 2010 - 7:24pm [Dine in]

I love Sushi and have spent time in Japan eating copious amounts. I love this restaurant. The food is outstanding for Vancouver as compared to what you get in Japan. The service is not great and a bit slow, but the food is certainly worth the wait. The soybean wraps are good, the rolls are excellent and the fish is always fresh and prepared well. The tea is always hot even if you need to ask for a refill once in a while. Great little place near my house. I will certainly be going there many more times.I recommend reservations if you have more than 4 people or on the weekend evenings as Makoto can fill up quite quickly.

Boss Bakery & Restaurant, The4800 Kingsway, #238, Burnaby
Solid HK Cafe
Submitted Sunday, November 7, 2010 - 7:16pm [Dine in]

We have been eating at The Boss for a few years now. We generally go there during the week when we don't have time to cook, don't want to spend a lot of money and want a good meal. The Boss is a Hong Kong style cafe much like most of the other HK Cafes out there. We like the boss as it is a good value for the money and we have a few favorite dishes there. I recommend the baked pork chop dish, the spaghetti with mini steak and the beef and ginger noodles dish. If you are wanting wonton soup, this place is pretty good but not the best. There is a rotating menu on the first page with combos. We enjoy combo page #4 - I usually order the Singapore Laksa soup. Yummy! Overall, The Boss is the The Boss, its not the best restaurant, but it is not the worst either...After reading some of the reviews below I am thinking that many of these people have never been to a HK cafe before. The food is served family style - meaning it comes out when it is ready and hot and sometimes this means that if your dish takes longer to make, you will wait. I recommend ordering 2 dishes and splitting - this way there is no disappointment :)

Good Burgers and Service
Submitted Sunday, July 11, 2010 - 4:49pm [Dine in]

I have eaten at Fatburger many times in the last few years and decided to try this location for the first time. We ordered a couple of fatburger combos and a strawberry margarita. The food was good, hot and tasty. The margarita was excellent - could taste the tequila, which is a change from other mass produced margaritas. The service was excellent. There was always someone coming by to see that everyone was enjoying their meal and there was no garbage left on any of the tables. Didn't have one this evening, but I highly recommend the milkshakes! Really Good! All in all, an enjoyable meal.

Taverna Greka Waterfront Restaurant326 Columbia Street, New Westminster
Great View, Mediocre Eats
Submitted Sunday, July 11, 2010 - 4:41pm [Dine in]

I visited this restaurant last night for my significant other's birthday with 4 other people. We were seated at a table right by the window with a wonderful view of the river. This was lovely. The server was attentive and came to check on us several times while we were ordering which was nice. Our drinks were always full. The food was average. It tasted like greek food you get everywhere else. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The bellydancer paid attention to the birthday boy which was nice. On the bad side of this review - the place needs some updating in terms of the decor, which is not bad, but not great either. As for the value of the food - it seems overpriced compared to the other places I have been. ie, only one skewer of chicken vs two at other spots. Chicken Souvlaki was $16.99 if that gives you an idea. Overall we had a fun night and enjoyed our experience, but will probably go somewhere else for dinner next time. That being said, I will return for lunch again, as this is more reasonably priced - for the same amount of food!

Days Thai7245 Canada Way, Burnaby
Thai-rific!
Submitted Saturday, July 3, 2010 - 10:00pm [Dine in]

I am a regular at this hole in the wall thai restaurant that is on the corner of Canada Way and Edmonds. In fact, my whole office makes a trip here for lunch at least once a week for their ridiculously cheap lunch specials. My favorite dish is the Panang Curry. My office mate's favorite order is the green curry with a Thai Iced Tea. We are there so often that the waitress knows her order and just asks if she wants the regular. The food is always hot and tasty. The service is quick and friendly and the value can not be beat. The lunch special includes the dish, the rice and an egg roll for 6.95! Another bonus is the take out service which includes a 10% discount for pick up! The seats are mostly booth style which is nice. There is fun mirror art on the wall, but other than that, it si pretty basic in terms of decor. This place is a solid Thai restaurant that is my favorite in the lower mainland. The other places better step it up if they want to compete for my business.

Pho Hong5975 Kingsway, Burnaby
Good Pho - Horrible Setting
Submitted Saturday, July 3, 2010 - 9:51pm [Dine in]

I have been eating here for the past 10 years or so. I enjoy the vermicelli and the spring rolls and my partner enjoys the pork and rice dish. That is pretty much the only reason that we return there time and again. This place offers quick, cheap and tasty Pho and that is about it. The service is abrupt and not attentive. No one is refilling tea at all during your visit, so you have to ask. The dishes are at times, not clean and the restaurant itself looks like a left over set from a porn version of the Godfather movies... Weird! This place is also not terribly clean. Actually, if I hadn't been coming here for years and had just walked in as a new patron, I would probably turn around and walk out. That being said - the food is good and that is why we go.

Asuka Sushi712C 12th Street, New Westminster
Great Sushi in New West
Submitted Saturday, July 3, 2010 - 9:34pm [Dine in]

I ate at Asuka Sushi after reading the reviews on dine here. I am happy to report that the good reviews are correct. I went for lunch with my office mate. It was not busy when we went so no waiting, which is great when you have to get back to work. The service was quick and attentive. The decor is not that upscale, but the food more than makes up for that. The sushi man behind the bar works wonders. I ordered a lunch box with some sushi, chicken teriyaki, salad, miso and some rolls. There was more food than one person can eat at lunch and amazingly it was very high quality as well as good value. I also ordered the chicken Karaage after reading the reviews here. No joke! They were so good I took some home for my partner to try them. My office mate ordered some rolls. The rolls were insanely big and delicious. I have never seen a roll that big. It was a bit hard to eat, but well worth the struggle as the ingredients were plentiful and fresh. They were full of vegetables etc - not too much rice which is nice. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for good quality sushi at a reasonable price. This place also does an all you can eat option, so I plan to try that next time I go.

Tamarind Hill Malaysian Cuisine628 6th Avenue, #103, New Westminster
Malaysian Masterpiece
Submitted Saturday, July 3, 2010 - 9:24pm [Dine in]

This is easily my favorite Malaysian restaurant in the lower mainland. The food is wonderful, the service is quick and attentive and it in on par with the other Malaysian spots around town. I have been here for both lunch and dinner and have enjoyed my experiences here each time. I highly recommend the Laksa soups. My favorite is the Malaysian Curry Laksa. I have converted a few of my office mates from their usual bowl of Pho to the Laksa. As for the dinner, I would equally recommend Tamarind Hill both for the fabulous flavour and the quality of the dishes. My favorite dishes are the sambal green beans and the sirloin and asparagus with spicy tomato sauce(ask for hot spice on this one). Hope you enjoy this restaurant as much as I do!
