Akbar's Own Indian Restaurant1905 West Broadway, Vancouver
First time ordering take-out from here
Submitted Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 3:20pm [Take-out]

There are times when I like to go unconventional and go for something completely out of the blue, and then there are days when I settle for a simple, predictable meal. This restaurant falls into the second category. Nothing wrong with that, but in a city like Vancouver where the number of asian/indian restaurants are too many to count, I figured restaurants would want to stray for the norm and stand out. I rarely order take-out, but when my preferred choice for Indian restaurant wasn't available, I ordered take out from here.

Food came rather quickly, I didn't have to wait much after making my order. I have not eaten here, so this is solely my experience from their take-out. For starters I had samosas. Presentation was great. A little big for my taste, but crispy, so great. The chicken tikka was a tad bit spicy for my liking and I had to pass it with naan and the other dish I ordered, palak paneer. Thankfully it was not a spicy second dish.

Nero Belgian Waffle Bar1703 Robson St, Vancouver
Always a treat
Submitted Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 3:04pm [Dine in]

This place is a treat; I wonder why hardly anyone has reviewed it before. I mean, when I go it always packed, despite its poor service. Yes. The current owners are quite rude people, and one would think that that would be enough to repel customers. But no, they must be doing something right, as people keep on coming. Like myself.

This is only because of their Belgian waffles. I've been to other places where they claim to have belgian waffles but they simply don't come close. There is a variety of waffles you can choose from, and you can then also choose how you would like them made: brussels or liege style. I prefer the brussels as they are more crispy, and with fruit and whipped cream, they are beyond amazing.

Nothing special
Submitted Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 3:07pm [Dine in]

I think my title sums it all. How I feel about this place overall and in general. I don't know why I come here when there are so many other Chinese places to choose from. Maybe it's like one of those bad habits which you can't drop because you have been doing it for long. The only thing I like from here are their lunch specials. Otherwise I find the prices to high for me. I have a hard time liking their spring rolls, let alone their bbq duck. The broth tastes like nothing! I usually like their fried rice dishes with chicken and pork but they were tasting kind of burnt. Like I said, I don't know why I keep on coming if the food is not good and too expensive.

Anatolia's Gate Restaurant7084 Kingsway, Burnaby
What happened, Anatolia?
Submitted Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 2:50pm [Dine in]

Anatolia used to be a breath of fresh air in the neighbourhood for being a different type of food. Everything in the area, or what I am used to eating is either Mexican, Indian, Thai or Chinese. Boring. But then there was Anatolia with Turkish food. Sure, it never was the most presentable or prettiest restaurant around, but at least it had good food.

While these things havent changed, Anatolia seems to have gone downhill or plain simply: bad. The lavash bread was seriously the only thing I liked. But I don't go to a restaurant to eat just bread. I had to wait nearly half an hour for my order and when I told the waiter he gave me a nasty look and didn't come back for the rest of the night. He also didn't come back with the bread which my friend was missing. I couldn't finish the Tsatizki and the chicken curry was super bland and cold. If Anatolia wants to keep its customers, they need to educate their staff and regain their food standards.
