Solid Fare and Service
Submitted Monday, December 10, 2012 - 7:37pm [Dine in]

Disclaimer - I am no expert or foodie or whatever - just know what I like and rarely score anything higher than a 3 (solid) unless I am, like, totally wowed and blown-away (rare) - so I give Espana a solid rating and recommend it highly. Enjoyed the food - tried various tapas (nice portions); enjoyed most, but a few were average. On the whole - GO - you will enjoy it. And very well-priced. Our meal - several tapas and a glass of wine each - came to about $80.00. Great deal.

Disappointed
Submitted Sunday, May 20, 2012 - 12:53am [Dine in]

I am not sure what all the fuss is about (mental note to self - stop paying attention to pretentious foodies and self-appointed experts), but, I for one, was most disappointed. Had the special - spot prawn withh spag - very poor. The spot prawns were floppy and tasteless - worse acutally - had a distinctive fishy taste - gross. It's now several hours since my dinner and I can still taste that fishy mush - yuk.

Also had the chick pea appet - avoid it; dry and tasteless - need something to take it up several notches.

On the other hand - great ambiance . . . too bad about the food. Those morons at Van Mag and other critics - get a life; better yet, go to school (college at least) and qualify for a real job.

Good Mexican Fare
Submitted Sunday, March 4, 2012 - 11:11am [Dine in]

Had dinner at Primo's last night (March 03) and a general 'thumbs-up' is what I can offer as a recommendation.

To be honest I wanted to leave in a mood to rave about the place - where oh where can I find a awesome Mexican restaurant in Vancouver - but I simply cannot. Not sure why - it's that elusive 'umph' that I was seeking but did not find. That said - I enjoyed the food (a tad pricey it has to be said). I had the jumbo grilled prawns on rice - excellent dish, but not sure if it was worth $22.50; had the ceviche as well - it was okay.

On the whole, a nice place for solid fare.

What an awesome place
Submitted Wednesday, February 1, 2012 - 11:33pm [Dine in]

Dropped in once (I live in North Van), but my niece was raving about it - and I loved it. Sadly I was in a rush, so grabbed a coffee, scone, and a loaf of bread. Loved it all, and plan to go back for more. Coffee was excellent, bread was to 'die for'. Next time I think I shall sit down for lunch - it's a beautiful looking set-up and it has me intriqued.

I like this place, but
Submitted Wednesday, February 1, 2012 - 11:23pm [Dine in]

This is a great location - right next to a Starbucks (which I avoid). I like JJ Bean - coffee is good, food is good, and pastries are good. Good solid fare by electic staff who seem to know their coffee and enjoy working there. But, here's the rub, why is the coffee never piping hot. It cools down when I add a touch of cream - ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh - I just hate that; and when I ask for a spot of hot milk, they get all snotty on me and ask for an extra .50c. Dammit man, I don't want a latte (if I wanted milk favoured with coffee then I would order the damn thing).

But I did notice that the music they were playing was really great coffee shop stuff - Sinatra, some Big Band, Charlie Parker - great jazz as is proper and right for coffee bars. Not the vomit-inducing Top 40, which is what they used to play (and maybe still do - but not on the day I visited).

Also - when I visited a few weeks ago, the paper-towel dispenser in the men's room was broken; on another recent trip (yesterday), it was still broken. What gives?

What a Great Location
Submitted Wednesday, February 1, 2012 - 11:14pm [Dine in]

My sister suggested lunch at this location - and I am glad I went. Had the bococinno (sp) pesto panini and cranberry/orange scone - both were great. But coffee was even better. Even better was the great jazz/big band music. What a great combo.

One complaint though - one of the washrooms was disgusting - gross!

What an awesome barista
Submitted Monday, January 30, 2012 - 12:13am [Dine in]

I have been a few times - usually late night, after dinner at one of the many great restaurants in Gastown. And I must say the Barista (at least the guy who works there on Sat night; I think he owns the place or is a part-owner) is simply great.

I asked for a coffee and got to chatting - he explained the process (clearly the guy knows his coffee) of making that perfect cup of coffee. And he made me a great cup of coffee. Actually he made me two - the first didn't turn out right (to his critical eye, though it looked perfect to me), so he tossed it out; and made me another. Great service, great coffee.

Recommend it highly.

What a great location - right next to the 5th Ave Cinema - food, service, and ambiance all solid. Can't say much more than that.

It was busy the night we visited, but was shown a seat by the 'pizza bar' with a view of the chefs kneading dough and making pizzas (interesting, though it does get a bit boring). Enjoyed the food and service was pleasant and efficient. Can't really rave about the place, but it does a very good job at being a 'solid' place to visit. I do intend to return.

What a poor lunch
Submitted Thursday, January 19, 2012 - 10:36pm [Dine in]

I am not a huge Earl's fan - but went there because a friend insisted. Had the Albacore Tuna app (very poor - avoid at all costs) and the Naples Pizza (so-so) - so skip it; my friend had the Kuang Pao Prawns - he wasn't impressed. So, on the whole, food below average. On the other hand service was friendly and efficient (yes, I know the girls are hot - but it would be nice if the food tasted a whole lot better).

Our waitress was charming and quite efficient - so can't really blame her for the poor lunch. Think I'll just avoid the place altogether.

My Favourite Cafe
Submitted Sunday, January 15, 2012 - 11:25am [Dine in]

Hands down - there is simply no comparison - this is my favourite cafe - awesome sandwiches, the best bread in the city, great coffee, and amazing pastries.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough - and I travel far and wide for great coffee and great food. Terra Breads fits the bill. It is a bit of distance from where I live, so I am doubly glad that their awesome breads are now widely available. I wish they would open a store on the North Shore.

Expensive - but shop wisely and you get great deals
Submitted Sunday, January 15, 2012 - 11:21am [Dine in]

Yes, the place is outrageously overpriced - but I must say their fresh food section is the best in the city. Yummy pizzas, awesome sandwiches, delectable desserts, and awesome coffee.

I don't do my grocery shopping here (hey, I am not foolish with my budget), but I regularly have lunch or shop for prepared foods - and, in my humble opinion, no other place in Vancouver even comes close to its freshness and taste. Even better they carry a great selection of locally-produced breads (Terra Breads is the simply the best).

Great place to dine and chill
Submitted Monday, January 9, 2012 - 11:23am [Dine in]

Dropped in on the weekend after hearing great things about the place - and I was not disappointed. I love spicy food - and I admit that the food could have been spicer - but I understand that they have to sensitive to the palates of western diners (possibly not as accustomed to spicy and hot food). Anyhow, that's a minor point. I love the concept of the place - great food and great hang-out and listen to music (ok, it's not exactly my type of music - but it's a cool scene).

I had the fries as an app (with spicy jerk sauce) and fresh seafood curry - both great and recommended; I especially liked the fries - hmmmm - definitely will return.

Hate Starbucks
Submitted Saturday, December 24, 2011 - 7:00pm [Dine in]

No mystery here - I simply detest Starbuck's coffee and almost everything about the giant corporation. Ok, in a pinch, I have been known to grab a java (for my fix, certainly not for the taste). Why does their coffee leave such a horrid and bitter after-taste. And I simply detest their stores - all of them - with its same design, dark woods, coldness everywhere - it feels like a giant corporate chain (because it is) no matter how much they try to be 'neighbourly'. With all the money at their disposal surely they can do better - much better.

On the other hand they do play great music - jazz and coffee go so well together.

Submitted Saturday, December 24, 2011 - 6:55pm [Dine in]

Let me be frank - I am not a huge fan of CC's menu - seems to me to lack imagination, but, I suppose, it's pubish food and one has to be reasonable. And I do go there for lunch on a fairly regular basis - the fish tacos are ok, the calamari is ok, but I must say the tuna tartar that I had last night was very very good. So hats off to CC - now the tartar is my must-have. And, I confess, the girls are very cute.

Great for Brunch
Submitted Saturday, December 24, 2011 - 6:49pm [Dine in]

ok - disclaimer - I haven't eaten here for sometime, but I am fairly new to dinehere.ca and and I trying to get caught up with comments on some of my favourite restaurants. And this is one of my favourite places for brunch in Vancouver. At one point in my life (when I was in a relationship) Sunday brunch was a must - and Trafalgar's was always on top of our list -never once disappointed. Great french toast, great omelettes - great everything. Truly a Vancouver gem.

Awesome service
Submitted Sunday, December 18, 2011 - 11:11am [Dine in]

I am more or less a regular for lunch and have been very satisfied at every visit - food is great, staff are attentive, and service is outstanding.

Had lunch with a friend (ok, this was several months ago, but I am a new member of dinehere) once and, in an off-hand, manner mentioned that the lunch seem to taking too long (it wasn't really, but I was in a bit of rush). Anyhow, lunch arrived shortly thereafter and it was great. But imagine my surprise when the management covered the bill. The reason - they had fallen short on their high service standard. I sort of protested and said 'the lunch wasn't exactly late' but, wow I thought, now that is service. And, of course, I continue to have lunch there on a more or less regular basis.

Go there for the food and expect high standards of service and quality - you will not be disappointed.

Great Food
Submitted Sunday, December 18, 2011 - 11:01am [Dine in]

Been here a few times - and it's been very good each time. Good value for the money. The service, though while I have rated it solid, does slip - yesterday for example (Sat Dec 17) - I did not find the waitress particularly attentive. Asked for my jacket and was simply directed to the coat rack - surely, the staff should have brought it to my table (as that is where they had taken it from). But, minor things aside, I do intend to return.

Submitted Saturday, November 26, 2011 - 11:34pm [Dine in]

Popped in for lunch a few days ago - have heard so much about the place, so thought I would check it out. On the whole - not bad. Had the grilled salmon lunch special - and for $10.00 - a pretty good deal, though the taste, and food overall, was nothing out of the ordinary. Good standard fare - in other words, I got what I paid for and wasn't disappointed. Would I go back. Well, I am in no rush, but if I happen to be in the neighbourhood during lunch, then yes.

Been here twice - and plan to return (though it is a wee bit expensive - but it's worth it). Food is great, service is great, and it's a cool place to hang-out. Great concept and ambiance. Highly recommended. This great restuarant is a much needed addition to Gastown - and acutally, quite fitting.

Tried it twice - crap both times
Submitted Sunday, October 23, 2011 - 9:34am [Dine in]

I like the concept and I really hope they succeed, but first many things need to be addressed. After reading a review of the place in the Globe and Mail, I visited twice during the summer - and, sorry to say, the results on both ocassions were disappointing.

Service - what service - slow and meandering; the food was below average. I had the waffles - dry and tasteless; also had the fish soup - average in taste and value. But as I said I like the concept.
