Better than fast food
Submitted Tuesday, September 8, 2009 - 9:41am [Dine in]

Went here during the weekend as I've heard about their great sandwiches. A hole in the wall place in Chinatown, but expected it. An older couple runs the place and there were about 5 sandwich choices. Saw all the french bread and I knew it was going to be good. Had the cold cuts and the bread was nice and fresh. Average amount of meat, good veggies and sauces. Overall, a great meal for $2.75.

Keg Steakhouse & Bar, The4510 Still Creek Avenue, Burnaby
Old school
Submitted Monday, August 24, 2009 - 2:41pm [Dine in]

Visited here on a weeknight and although this restaurant is new, the Keg seems to be still a bit old school and nothing new. The menu doesn't really change as they still have escargots. Didn't this go out in the 80's? Not too many appys to chose from so straight to the mains and had their classic prime rib. Good size and done medium rare as promised, nice and tender with nice horseradish on the side. Sides were very average with rice being good but the grilled veggies actually burnt. Tried their small desserts, about 4-5 varieties served in a small shooter type cup. The chocolate mousse/pudding a bit too sweet as well as some type of caramel cream one. Overal, just solid and nothign outstanding.

Great Sandwhich
Submitted Wednesday, August 19, 2009 - 2:19pm [Dine in]

Skipped the food court this time and went straight to Black Forest. Tried some of their sausages before but never their cold cuts. I've heard about their sandwiches but never tried them. Many types of cuts to chose from (roast beef, ham, turkey etc). Chose the ham and even with that there are approx. 5 types so chose the European style. Served in a Ciabbata bun, lettuce, tomato and cheese (3 types at $.50 extra). Comes with a free can of pop so approx. $7. Great sandwich as the bun was good and good portion of meat. Nice alternative to the subways and quiznos. Fast service (if timed right) and just your food court type of setting. Will try the turkey next time.

Lunch Specials
Submitted Tuesday, August 18, 2009 - 4:40pm [Dine in]

Good place for a quick lunch as they have a nice soup and main option for $8. Hot and Sour soup was good with lots of veggies. Soup was a bit too thick and not cooked through as there were a few 'gelatin' areas. Nice flavour. Tried their chilli chicken and was told it was made medium. Came and there were about a dozen dried red peppers, but if you picked them out, it was medium. Good flavour and goes great with rice. Quick service and good value. Just completed a renovation a few months back and nice look about the place.

Lunch visit
Submitted Tuesday, August 18, 2009 - 9:50am [Dine in]

Made reservations on-line and visited during the week for lunch. Made a request to sit outside and was shown to one of the best tables overlooking Alberni street. Outdoor sitting area looks great with comfortable chairs. They have some high bar type of seats and tables as well. Only option is the $28 combo lunch. Chose the crab cakes which were great as they had a bit of a lemony broth with it. The hangar steak which was done on the rare side which was very tender. Chocolate pudding to round out the meal, very good. Came with some mix mushrooms which were very good. Service was great and attentive. Value was outstanding for amount of food and service. Would go back and try lunch again. Dinner may be expensive.

90's prices
Submitted Friday, August 14, 2009 - 3:39pm [Dine in]

Went here for dinner during the week and they had a promotion for 90's prices until mid Aug. I don't remember the regular prices but from a review of the prices, the items are $1-$2 off the regular price. Had the lamb and it was very good. Wish they served it with Pita bread but out came some white rolls which I thought was unusual for a greek restaurant. Lamb was seasoned well and came with the other ususal suspects (rice, greek salad and potato). Service was very good but the ambiance is a bit dated. The main dining area hasn't been updated in years and the washrooms were from the 80's not even the 90's. Value was just decent.

Lunch Visit
Submitted Wednesday, August 12, 2009 - 9:25am [Dine in]

Came here during the week and it's mainly business people having lunch versus tourists at say Joe Fortes or Coast. Very masculine setting with wood walls and high ceilings, very nice. Ordered some oysters and calamari to start. Oysters were fresh while the calamari was very good, big squid pieces. Had the halibut for the main and it was cooked perfect along with a lemon rissotto. Service was attentive and overall value was pretty good. Would come back.

Pub like restaurant
Submitted Tuesday, August 11, 2009 - 4:16pm [Dine in]

Went here on a Friday and it's a nice restaurant that looks and feels like a pub. The old Lou's but with a nice updated look and menu. Daily drink and food specials so variety is good. Tried the chicken club and it was very good with a bit of spicy flavour. Good toasted bread with lots of chicken. Side Salad was very good. Tried the nachos as well which had lots of toppings. NIce place to watch games as there are several HD TV's. Service was fast and efficient.

Great Dinner
Submitted Monday, August 10, 2009 - 9:55am [Dine in]

Went by on a weekday for dinner and had a great time. Enjoyed a seat just inside but by the big windows so you can see the sites of gastown walk by. Had the pizza to share and it was quite good, also tried the poutine with pulled pork. Just average as the fries were not crispy enough. For th main, had the ravaoli with duck. Very good and different as it's in a light broth versus a heavy sauce. Service was very good and casual which fits in with the restaurant. Would return.

Hocky puck burgers
Submitted Wednesday, August 5, 2009 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

Went here for a bite after shopping and this location choices seem a bit limited. Get the normal pizza, hotdog, chicken fingers and burger. So tried the Angus Burger with fries and drink. At $5.99, a good deal. Looked impressive with a big paddy but the cheese was not melted, which is a bad sign. Tasted like the paddy was one of these pre-cooked with grill mark types. Just been nuked. One good thing is that you can put your own condiments. However the burger was really hard and dry. Didn't like it at all and would avoid it at all cost. Fries were OK but couldn't finish them. Fast service and outdoor picnic like settiing.

New locale
Submitted Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 4:58pm [Dine in]

Visited the new location during a weekday and it was quite busy. I guess new customers checking it out. Restaurant looks great with 2 floors including a loft type of view over the main floor. Raw bar in the middle of the main floor. Waitress was quite slow taking drink and food orders and this slowed down the lunch. She would deliver drinks (water etc) and not take orders before she left. An hour before appys were served. Had the chowder which was very good as well as some oysters to start. Chose 3 types and they were out of 2 so changed the order. You would think the waitress would know before hand what was available but she did not. Sable fish for the main and it was excellent. Time for total lunch was 1 1/2-2 hours which is too long. Value was just decent as it's quite pricey for lunch.

Parking
Submitted Monday, July 27, 2009 - 12:08pm [Dine in]

We picked for a weekend dinner as we wanted somewhere where there is ample parking. With it being at Lansdowne, it wasn't a problem. About 2/3 full so no wait for a table. Chose the regular AYCE versus the deluce. At $19.95, it was a good deal. Farily good sashimi selection and good cones. Fish was just average as were the rolls. Cooked items were half decent and orders came quickly. Good service with removal of empty plates. Good ambiance. Would return if wanted no hassle AYCE.

Dim Sum before 11
Submitted Monday, July 27, 2009 - 9:46am [Dine in]

They have a special where most dim sum dishes are $2.50 if ordered before 11am. Actually made a reservation for 2 tables on a weekend and the tables were there ready to go right on time at 10:30. Regular DS dishes and they were pretty good, service was about average. Nothing outstanding nor bad about the experience. Would go again.

Average Greek
Submitted Friday, July 24, 2009 - 11:30am [Dine in]

This new place on Lonsdale is where the old bagel place used to be. Inside looks pretty nice with your usual greek motif. Visited during lunch and they have a pretty big selection. Had the lamb shank and it was pretty good, a bit dry on some pieces. The usual greek salad, roasted potato and pita. Agree with the other comments that rice should and normally comes with it. Overall not bad for $12. Will try the roast lamb next time. Good service and pretty quick.

Great dinner
Submitted Friday, July 24, 2009 - 11:16am [Dine in]

Went there on a weekday for a family get together. We had a dozen people so the normal menu was tweaked a bit to accomdate. Seafood was the theme and the dishes were excellent. Included: Shrimp fruit salad: normally done with lobster but good, Shark fin soup: lots of sharkfin, Lobster: 3 so lots, abaolone: whole one per person; steam fish: cooked really well, scallops: the dried kind on pea tips, good, chicken: good change of pace. There were 11 dishes in total and the bill was big but great service with constant changing of plates and all dishes plated. Expensive but expected given the dishes ordered.

Great patio
Submitted Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - 10:48am [Dine in]

Went during the week for dinner and made reservations upstairs on the patio. It seems they have cut down the seating as part of the patio is now a garden. The restaurant area is all covered while the bar area has some umbrellas. Started off with a 2 dozen oysters which were really good, all local ones. Then had the sable fish which was excellent. Cooked just right with perfect balance of miso. Sides were just ok (rice and asparagus). Tried the beef carpacio and it was very good. Dessert was just OK with the lava cake and ice cream. Service was very good and they accomodated any changes to the menu. Only part was when the oysters were served, they didn't explain the various types. Overall a great evening. A bit on the pricey side but it seems the public thinks it's good value as the restaurant was full.

Nice breakfast
Submitted Friday, July 17, 2009 - 2:54pm [Dine in]

Went there during the week for breakfast and they have both western and chines style. Ordered the congee with pork and preserved egg and it comes with your choice of noodles. I chose stir fried rice noodles. A good portion and it tasted very good. The congee was just average, not enough of the good stuff inside. For around $6, a great choice. The place has a great view of the outside as they have large windows. Not as busy but expected and service was quick and efficient. I noticed lots of specials thoughout the day as per many HK cafe. Will come back and try lunch.

Taco Tuesday
Submitted Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 3:42pm [Dine in]

Went on a Tuesday and they have hard and soft beef tacos for $.99, a great deal. Lunch for $5 when you combo it. I love the mexi fries as they have a great hot sauce to dip in. I've tried other items such as the burritos and the owner will sub out sour cream for guac. Fast service and very efficient. It's in the mall so ambiance is the food court which is pretty clean and comfortable.

Just OK
Submitted Wednesday, July 15, 2009 - 9:26am [Dine in]

Went there on a weekday night and not that busy, no reservation required. Ordered the pigs ears to start, a bit on the small side as there are clear noodles on the bottom to make the dish look bigger. The soup dumplings were just OK, only 5 per order so small too. Smoked tea duck was pretty good along with the stir fry rice cakes. Overall not too bad but there are better Shanghainese places out there. Comfortbable place with good service. A good mall option if you are near Aberdeen.

Lunch visit
Submitted Tuesday, July 7, 2009 - 1:28pm [Dine in]

Came here during a weekday lunch and ordered off their lunch menu. There have about a dozen lunch specials for $7.50 which is a great price. Tried the Pad Thai which comes with salad and spring roll. The salad and spring roll arrived almost immediately thus probably prepared and plated in advance. The salad was very basic and the spring roll was room temp. Nothing too exciting. The Pad Thai was just OK. The flavour was a bit on the tame side and the noodles need some extra texture like pickled radish that some places use. Portion was decent for lunch. Service was fast and efficient. The restaurant looks great after the move. Overall an OK choice, would try the other items next time.
