Just OK
Submitted Thursday, August 23, 2007 - 9:52am [Dine in]

Went there late one night and had a few dishes. The squab was just OK but I understand they are famous for this dish so a bit dissapointing. Half baked salted chicken was really small and dry, very bad. Peatips with tofu was very good and large portion. Spareribs in orange sauce was just OK. Overall I would say an average chinese restaurant at best. Nothing to go out of the way for.

Too rushed
Submitted Monday, August 20, 2007 - 11:20am [Dine in]

Tried this place for the first time and have not had previous experience at their previous restaurant. Got there pretty early before 6pm and there weren't too many people yet. Good appies with the cold duck, jelly fish, fish etc being very good. The steam dumplings were very good so we ordered more. A set menu was chosen and crab with rice cakes, boneless duck with Taro, steamed pork was very good. The veggies with mushroom were OK. Overall a good value with lots of left overs. Good dessert, deep fried doughnuts with red bean paste covered with powder sugar. A bit rushed as all of the dishes came quite fast. I guess they want to turn the table quick.

Good place for a meal
Submitted Friday, August 3, 2007 - 9:54am [Dine in]

Very good chicken pitas but they seem to run out very fast during the peak times. Had to have the alternative, beef or lamb a few times and not as good. Processed type of meat.

Had the chicken plate once and very good value. If you go, stick with the chicken. Good daily specials.

Family style
Submitted Monday, July 30, 2007 - 11:44am [Dine in]

Good family style restaurant. Very casual with what looks like it is family run (kids, mom, dad all working). Food is pretty decent, pork and clams very good. Co-diners had the salted cod which was OK. Good chorizo and squid appies.

A bit slow on the service but good place to have a few glasses of wine while you wait.

Went there on a Sat night and agree, you need a reservation. good thing we did and were seated right away in one of the booth/rooms. The orders were quickly filled and nothing seemed to be missing. Good service with prompt clearing of dishes, grill replacment etc. The only thing is that the air did not seem to circulate as it gets quite stuffy due to the grilling.

Good Lunch Specials
Submitted Tuesday, July 3, 2007 - 1:35pm [Dine in]

Visited them on several occasions at their new location for lunch, I think they have some very good deals. You get a soup or spring roll, entree (chicken, beef, pork) with rice or noodles for under $8. Quite a lot of food and the quality is very good. I would think they are the best place on Lonsdale for Chinese Food. Ordering off the menu is good as well, many choices including dim sum. Can be a bit slow if they get busy but overall a good choice.

Good Dim Sum Alternative
Submitted Tuesday, June 19, 2007 - 3:15pm [Dine in]

Tried their Dim sum for lunch on a weekday. A good, somewhat lighter alternative to all of the meat filled ones. If you stay away from ordering too many deep fried items, you may not feel as bloated than the regular dim sum places. Choices are limited to about 2 dozen items. Some special noodles dishes during the week at $6.95.

Lunch Visit
Submitted Wednesday, June 6, 2007 - 4:00pm [Dine in]

Went for a lunch visit recently and had a very nice meal. Menu is big enough to provide people with enough choices (Pasta, Sandwiches, mains as well as a few appies). Many of my co-workers enjoyed the pastas with the 3 types of pasta dish, the best. If you can't decide, they give you 3 small portions of different pastas. There is a business person's lunch which has a salad, soup and entree. It all comes in one dish (separated like a Japanese Bento Box). Very good with salmon and rissotto as the main. Dessert is also included. A safe bet. Overall, nice portions and very good quality.

OK for a Cafe
Submitted Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 9:33am [Dine in]

I guess the name says it all, it is a Cafe and wouldn't expect much more. Good chicken and that's what they are known for, agree a bit on the expensive side but good quality. Noodles are average with the Laksa better than the non Laksa noodles. The veggie selection is a bit slim and the soup quality not very good. Good selection of iced drinks. Overall, a bit pricey for what you would expect to pay.

The regular dishes
Submitted Thursday, May 17, 2007 - 2:42pm [Dine in]

Visited the Phnom recently and had the regular chicken wings, squid and dry noodles. As usual, very very good. Seems like every table orders these standards. Decided to try the Butter Beef that some tables were ordering. Is it me or is the beef been put in a microwave to cook it to rare/medium. The outside permiter seems to be cooked but the middle not cooked, typical for microwaved dishes.

Salad rolls were OK but I guess not their strong area. The chicken curry looks good and will try it next time.

Not the Same
Submitted Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 9:46am [Dine in]

I don't know what it is but the restaurant doesn't seem the same like the ones on Robson and Thurlow. I guess it's in in a mall but even with the yelling back and forth, it seems a bit fake to me. The kitchen items were very good but it seems that the selection is more limited. The sushi was not very good and I wonder why they even try that as that is not their strong point. I rather them have kitchen items only. Good pork cheeks, black cod, beef tongue.

Good place to catch the game
Submitted Monday, April 9, 2007 - 12:11pm [Dine in]

The bar is an excellent area to catch the Canucks. Lots of tables and bar stools for a restaurant. Also there are many TV's. The projection TV is a bit fuzzy during the day. The service was excellent as they didn't rush you nor did they constantly come by to get the beer count high. Good appies to much on as standard at the Earl's.

Good Lunch Buffet
Submitted Thursday, March 29, 2007 - 5:01pm [Dine in]

A great way to try Indian food if you don't know what you like. They normally have 2 meat dishes (beef and chicken) and about 3 vegetarian dishes. Some cold salads to start, basmati rice and naan bread. Very good deal at $9 for lunch and very quick as the food is already prepared.

Overall I would say the lunch fare is pretty standard in terms of quality.

Good Pho Place
Submitted Tuesday, March 20, 2007 - 9:52am [Dine in]

The Beef here seems to be of better quality and the portions above average. The appies such as the spring rolls and salad rolls are pretty good. I've not tried any of the crepes or rice dishes but they look very good.

Neighbourhood is a bit sketchy so wouldn't go there during later hours.

So So Pho
Submitted Tuesday, March 13, 2007 - 4:08pm [Dine in]

Went there for dinner and shared the wings and spring rolls to start. OK spring rolls, average for a vietnamese rest. but the wings weren't as good as Phonm Penh (sp) in Chinatown.

Large Pho for $5.95 is a good deal and soup was good. Standard quality of meat. What I didn't like was the delay in the other people's food. They ordered fried rice and it came when the pho orders were almost finished. Service needs to be improved as per other posts. Good budget meal.

Lunch encounter
Submitted Tuesday, March 6, 2007 - 3:14pm [Dine in]

A good place for a special lunch or dinner. A bit pricey if it is a regular lunch place. This time it was over lunch and the selection is quite large. On top of that you get several daily specials where you can't go wrong. Can be a bit heavy if you chose one of the dishes with cream and cheese but overall very nice. Salmon was very good as well as the pasta of the day.

Typical Japanese Restaurant
Submitted Monday, March 5, 2007 - 9:57am [Dine in]

This is your typical Japanese restaurant run by non Japanese. Not a truly authentic experience as the sushi is a bit crude and not presently as nicely as you would expect from an a la carte restaurant. A bit like an ayce presentation. A bit on the expensive side for their signature rolls. Good variety in the rolls but the rice is a bit thick.

As with the many reviews, it's just a diner that serves your basic breakfasts and burgers. Had the famous Yukon breakfast and not as big as I was told it would be. Having said that, I still didn't finish it leaving the toast behind. Very good with the different type of back bacon used.

Will try the burgers next time. One pet peeve is the 2 sizes of pop. Why don't they just have the large size versus making you have a choice.

Good Kalamari
Submitted Friday, March 2, 2007 - 9:08am [Dine in]

Went there and had the Kalamari and the greek cheese dish to share as appies. Very good Kalamari with nice batter and tender squid. As for the cheese, haven't had it many times before but wasn't too impressed. It didn't come with Pita bread so I didn't know if you just eat it by itself. Much better when the Pita bread arrived with the Mains.

Had the Roast Lamb and was very good. Large enough portion and good sides such as the greek salad, rice and spud. Never really eat the spud as it quite big. Good value and atmosphere.

Dim Sum
Submitted Monday, February 26, 2007 - 12:13pm [Dine in]

Very busy before 11:00am as they offer 20% discount. Dim Sum menu is nothing too fancy and out of the ordinary. Good quality for all of the usual favourites. Very Busy during Chinese NY but that's typical for all restaurants. Very loud during Dim Sum but I guess that's standard as well. Well priced 10 person set menus versus others and King Crab is always on the low price side when compared to other comparable restaurants.
