Pretty good Thai
Submitted Friday, June 26, 2009 - 12:39pm [Dine in]

Went there on a weeknight and they were fairly busy. Nice interior and warm greetings by the hostess. Tried the duck in red curry - good but I'm sure they use chinese BBQ duck as the color on the skin is just like it; yellow pork curry - very good with bamboo shoots, quite a large portion; pad Thai - very good with raw sprouts on the side. The papaya salad was good but a bit weak on the spice but I guess you can order to you liking. Overall a very good dinner with farily good value. Speedy service.

Lunch Visit
Submitted Friday, June 26, 2009 - 12:18pm [Dine in]

Visited the place during the week for lunch and was impressed overall. They have a small lunch menu with some seafood sandwiches and other items. Ordered off the lunch menu and had the fish rice bowl. Came with 2 pieces of halibut over some salad greens on top of rice. First time I had a rice bowl with green salad. It was good but prefer cooked veggies with rice. The sauce was a terriyaki sauce and a bit too salty for me but overall enjoyed the meal. Service was quick and friendly and the deli style inside provided good ambiance. As for value, a bit over priced for lunch but this is West Van.

Great specials
Submitted Monday, June 22, 2009 - 12:01pm [Dine in]

Visited during the week and they have great specials from Monday to Friday. Especially the personal jug and pizza special, I belive on Thursdays. The pizza are thin crust and are really good, lots of varieties to chose from. The waitresses are great and they seem to come by at just the right time. Good values for the specials while the ambiance is a bit old looking, sort of fits the type of restaurant. They have live music on Sat's which is a great alternative to other pubs/restaurants.

Lunch Burritoo
Submitted Friday, June 19, 2009 - 12:56pm [Dine in]

Tried their fajita chicken burrito on a weekday. It was suppose to contain onions and peppers but couldn't find any. The chicken seemed a bit dry as well, maybe too long on the warming tray. The burrito need a bit of a kick so added the hot sauce they had in the restaurant but this shouldn't be needed. Overall an average wrap. Service was quick and the place quite nice. May try again.

Fresh Pho
Submitted Monday, June 15, 2009 - 10:34am [Dine in]

Came for lunch on a Sat and very busy little spot. Tried their Viet Sandwiches and they were very good. Nice crusty french bun with good veggies and meat inside. Great deal at $3. Shared some Pho and the noodles were fresh, not dry. It seems they get it fresh from LA. Big portions with lots of meat. Very good value. Service is decent, fast and efficient. Would come back.

Greasy Spoon
Submitted Wednesday, June 10, 2009 - 4:52pm [Dine in]

Went there for breakfast and it's just another greasy spoon. Chinese and western food but mostly western. Chose from their breakfast specials and pretty good deals that start at around $5. Get the standard choice of meat, hash browns, toast and eggs. Average portions and good value. Service was pretty standard, coffee refills were frequent. Nothing really to talk about with respect to ambiance as it's just a diner.

After 7pm menu
Submitted Tuesday, May 26, 2009 - 9:53am [Dine in]

Noticed that they have items on the back page of their menu that is 40% off after 7pm. Went there at around 8pm and there was a bit of a take out crowd but pretty quiet. Ramen ordered and pretty average with OK soup and portions were a bit small. Rolls were quite good and at 40% off, a good deal. Overall meal was good and the price was great. The service was just OK with items coming late for other people at the table.

Checked it out on a weekend and it was quite busy. There is no real waiting area thus you have to wait outside until your table is ready. Small approx. 35 seats. Great menu selection with daily specials. Had the half order of gnocchi to start which was made with lamb ragu and mushrooms. Very good. Then the Osso bucco which was very good. Great service and place looks nice. Value is pretty good as most entrees are in the $20's with the pasta in the mid $10's.

Quick and filling
Submitted Wednesday, April 15, 2009 - 2:56pm [Dine in]

Went to Yass which is inside a grocery store. Cafeteria like setting where you order and wait for your number. Lunch time and there are many combo's. Most in the low teens. A bit expensive for lunch but the portions seem to be big. Had 2 meat kabobs, a good deal at $8 which includes rice, bread and pop. A lot of meat and quite good. Made right there when you order. Rice was nice and fluffy. Tried the lamb shank before and it was good as well. Good place for a quick and filling bite. Ambiance is Ok as you just sit in the store but outside seating during summer. Service is minimal.

Nice family run place
Submitted Monday, April 13, 2009 - 12:15pm [Dine in]

A great pllace for good valued Shanghai food on Main. Went here for lunch and it's run by 2 sisters in the front and their husband(s) in the kitchen. Tried the steamed dumplings and they are very good. Juicy and thin skinned. The beef rolls in green onion pancakes are very good as well as the pan friend dumplings. Ordered a family style chicken soup where they put 1/2 a chicken in soup with mushrooms etc, very good. The only poor part of the lunch were the soup noodles. The Tan Tan noodles were just OK. Soup was good but the noodles were not. Good service, friendly but bare bones ambiance. Will go for cheap eats again.

As there are not too many Vietnamese places in N. Van, tried this one as I had a crazing for Pho. Lunch time crowd was pretty good but not too busy. Limited choices for Pho with no exotic meats to chose from, I think 3-4 choices. Soup was good, meat amount was average, meat quality was average. Others had various combos and they looked quite big. Noticed that the salad rolls were big but rolled up a bit loose, perhaps with too much stuffing as they burst open during eating. Would try the combos and the sandwiches next time. Service was quick and efficient, perfect for luch time. The price was a bit on the high side as no lunch menu, just the regular menu. Ambiance is pretty basic. Would go back.

Cramped and Loud place
Submitted Monday, March 16, 2009 - 9:54am [Dine in]

Went here on a friday night and it was booked solid, no room for walk ups but had a reservation. Must of been the sale on king crab. Tried the squab (very good), soup (good), chicken (good) and their tofu and veggies (good). The service was good but the place is too small and too loud. There was a large group next to us that seemed to be bringing in their own wine and chinese white liquor. They were very loud and toasting all the time. I would say typical Mainland China type of celebrating. Would not go back.

Not that great value
Submitted Wednesday, March 4, 2009 - 3:00pm [Dine in]

Went there on a weekend and it wasn't that busy. A limited menu as they had a new chef. Tried the mussels, a bit on the small side but very good, and the crab fritters, small as well but good. Tried the pasta for the main and it was very good. Nice wine selection but overall value was not there. They should increase the portions. Service was good but it was quiet so expected as much. Nice looking wine bar. May try if they expand their menu.

Submitted Tuesday, March 3, 2009 - 10:57am [Dine in]

Went there on a Sat night and the place looks very nice. Modern looking with a very sleek interior. Was seated upstairs and this area is even better than the downstairs. Some tables and some beds to sit/lie. Food was generally very good. You get each protien served 3 ways when you order. Calamari, chicken, lamb all were tried and all very good. Had the flat bread as well with humous, very good. Atmoshphere upstairs is a plus and service was very good. Price is a bit high with overall value as average. Would go back.

Good all around breakfast
Submitted Thursday, February 26, 2009 - 9:42am [Dine in]

Nice that you can find an all day breakfast place. Tried their corn beef hash. Hash was the 'out of the can' type you buy from the store so that was just OK. Nice mix with pototoes, onions and peppers. The eggs came poached all the way as I prefer it to be runny. Will ask for that next time. For around $9, not bad value. The burgers looked good for next time. Service was decent, you pay and they deliver your food at the table. Cafe type of atmosphere.

Not pub like
Submitted Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - 10:56am [Dine in]

Went here to catch the game and the layout is not very good. The TV's seem small and old versus the newer pubs/restaurants and the layout of the place does not allow a few tables to view a TV. I would think the view lines would be most important for pubs as this is why most people go. The food was pretty good, tried the yam fries and souvaliki. Seems like the menu has a lot to chose from. Service was quick and friendly. Value is average for a pub. Would probably not return here to watch a game.

Just OK
Submitted Monday, February 23, 2009 - 10:28am [Dine in]

Went there for dinner and tried their Peking Duck which was on special. $20 for 2 courses. The skin was very good and crispy but the 2nd dish, lettuce wrap, was quite small. When you have left over lettuce, portions are small. Soup was quite regular and also tried their spicy beans (good), chicken (good but a bit dry) and black cod (a bit too over fried). Service was good and overall value was just OK. Would go back as not many Chinese restaurants on the west side.

Dim Sum visit
Submitted Monday, February 23, 2009 - 10:26am [Dine in]

Went there for Dim Sum on a weekend and had a good experience. Arrived a bit before 11am so lots of tables. The place is smaller than I expected but they have some VIP rooms in the back. Several steam DS dishes orderd, the standard and they were up to par. Tried the roast duck with rice noodles, which was on special and it was very good. Dessert items were just OK. A bit on the expensive side but service was good.

Too expensive
Submitted Wednesday, February 18, 2009 - 2:55pm [Dine in]

Went there for lunch during the week and normally japanese restaurants have lunch specials. They did have a few box lunch specials but the price ranged from $11-$16 which is too expenisive. The other alternative was to order off the dinner menu which was already a bit overpriced. Ended up with the Sashimi box. Had about 5 pieces of sashmi (farmed salmon), tempura, salad and a fried pork chop. For $14, it was not worth it. The sashimi was average while the rest was just ok. Went with 3 others and they all got their food at different times, even when there were only 6 table occupied. Service was ok and the restaurant looked new. Would not return.

Just OK DOV
Submitted Tuesday, January 27, 2009 - 11:04am [Dine in]

Went during the weekend and a group all tried the DOV menu. Tried the scallops as the starter and it was just OK. Served on top of some curry lentils and it didn't seem to match with the scallops. Had the artic char for the main and it was quite good with the skin nice and crispy. Mashed potatoes served underneath. I would think for a higher end restaurant, they could of served something else. Had a taste of the Ling cod, very good but I did not like the beignets. Just too soggy. Best part of the meal was the Panna Cotta, really rich.

Service was outstanding. Overall value would be just OK, I don't think I would return. Nice restaurant, doesn't seem too crowded even though it was full.
