Good BBQ - hits the spot
Submitted Monday, November 2, 2009 - 8:29pm [Dine in]

So 4 of us went on a Tuesday night a couple of weeks ago - it was totally dead, so our chances of avoiding the awful service I had read about were pretty good, and I was right, sort of (will explain). We all ordered the all-u-can-eat ribs, which were good. In fact, the waitress was really nice as 3 out of 4 of us couldn't eat more than a regular serving of a full rack so she reduced our bills to the normal rate of a full rack vs. all-u-can-eat. The 4th ate a lot of ribs. Must get the ribs with sauce!! The sides were good, I had the beans and baked potato (no sour cream though, arghh), the others opted for mashed potatoes and/or fries. All said they were good. Service was good up til this point.

Then came dessert, and to the waitress' benefit this was not her fault. We were one of 2 parties in the place, and we ordered one dessert to share between the 4 of us (we were pretty full-o-ribs). It was deep-fried cheesecake, which BTW tasted kinda like a gooey cinnabon for some reason, anyway . . . it took over 20 minutes for the thing to come out? The kitchen people apparently forgot about the order? The waitress redeemed the situation by bringing out 4 forks and a knife with the dessert, and split the amount on each of our bills, so that was good forethought.

I don't think I'd initiate the idea to go back, but if someone else suggested, I'd probably agree. I'm still waiting for Boonies BBQ to reopen. Now there's some good BBQ!!

Excellent Sushi in Cloverdale!
Submitted Monday, November 2, 2009 - 8:17pm [Dine in]

Here's a great place for sushi in Cloverdale. They serve up some really yummy, quality sushi! Price might be higher than a joint in Newton, or a to-go style place, but it's worth it. The sashimi has always been fresh - the portions are generous, as are the hosts. Our family of 3 went 3 times in one week! We usually order the dinner combo for 2 ($36), and it's completely crazy the amount of food you get, we always take some home (usually the hot portion/teriyaki). It comes with full portions of miso, sunumono salad, tempura, a giant sushi boat with everything from sashimi, octopus, & california rolls, to tuna, salmon sushi, house rolls etc, it also comes with 2 orders of teriyaki (chicken/beef/tofu), and dessert!! Come hungry if you order this meal. Otherwise, go a la carte :-)

I think it's family-run, as the brother of the owner owns the one in Langley. Sure, the location means you're staring out of the window at No.10 Hwy, but just look the other way! The food is good, the people are nice and it's my go-to place for sushi in Surrey. Highly Recommend you try it out!

Good Ice Cream - Overpriced and Underportioned
Submitted Saturday, March 28, 2009 - 10:43pm [Dine in]

So I am a huge fan of the US chain Coldstone Creamery and thought I'd give this place a try - it's the same sort of thing, right? Wrong! I was totally put off by the fact that they weigh each order on a little piece of wax paper. A scoop is a scoop. No wonder it takes so long for an order! Can you imagine if Baskin Robins had to do that each time they scooped a cone? And a double scoop!? They should be able to eyeball it in a days' work. We ordered a "large" scoop, it was probably 1 cup (250ml) worth of ice cream. The ice cream tasted good, but I have had better.

Then came the "add in" - which, being so close to Easter, I chose the little Cadbury Easter Minis. They added a very carefully measured small scoop of exactly 6 candies for our "large" scoop of ice cream. Not exactly generous. How much was this? $5.95 +$0.75 for the waffle bowl, + tax. $8? And kiddie cones are $3.50 if you're curious! I'd rather drive down to Casa Gelato and get real home made ice cream.

I know it's a special treat - one that you don't do often, but save your money and get yourself a Blizzard. It's the same rush. And will leave you just as satisfied, for a lot less. This place is just a novelty.

Good Mexican Food (in Mexican Time)
Submitted Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 7:48pm [Dine in]

It's got great food and delicious drinks. Kitschy decor and yummmmmy food, including the requisite (home) fried chips and salsa. The meals are really good value (large portions) of good, authentic Mexican cuisine. BUT be prepared to lounge around for a while! While friendly, the staff is a bit on the slow side . . . might be them working out their kinks as they're relatively new - but the food is good - so if you're not in a huge hurry, it's a great place for dinner and drinks for date night, or for girls' night. The Mexican band is very a la Mexico - sets the fiesta mood - the margaritas are a must (I had a house one with Mango and other mixed fruits - - really good).

Got A Hankering for Ribs???
Submitted Wednesday, January 21, 2009 - 8:36pm [Dine in]

Ok, the ambience is seriously strange, but bear that in mind when you go there and you'll get over it once you taste the food.

We love BOONIES Ribs! They are really delicious - you can taste the love. Boonie is a great guy doing what he loves - great BBQ and awesome authentic dishes from the south. My husband and I split the Full Meal Deal and each had a half-rack of ribs and we shared the two sides: collard greens (so yummy! a little tang and a little heat in the cooked greens make them a 'must' for next time!!) and red beans and rice (also tasty! would order again!). Our 3 yr old had the mac & cheese and ate up the bowl! We've been to the Memphis Blues and the ribs at Boonies are better - the sauce is better! Plus we don't have to travel far to get a great meal. We also capped off the meal with a Pecan Pie - SO GOOD. I don't even eat pie and I loved it. It was like a giant butter tart chockful of yummy pecans. Delicious!
Needless to say, we were so full. BUT, we can't wait to go back.

Boonie, I hope you stick around and keep up the awesome work! The food is great! If you move, we will follow you!!
