A great night!
Submitted Monday, February 18, 2008 - 1:05pm [Dine in]

I had the pleasure of attending the Toast to the coast at the Vancouver Aquarium last Friday night. It was a fundraising event for the Ocean Wise sustainability program that featured 10 BC wineries and 5 Ocean Wise Restaurants. All the restaurants featured one or two types of seafood, sustainable of course, and in particular one stood out. As I walked through the event I keep hearing people talking about amazing crab cakes by the shark tank, so over to the shark tank it was! This was the only station with a long line up (I wasn’t the only person to get the 411). When I got to the front I was greeted by a man in a black chef coat with no name on it. He introduced himself as Michael, the New Chef of SIP Resto Lounge. He had only started a few day prior and had a good sense of humor about being “thrown into the water”, being at the Aquarium and all. Busy as it was, he still took the time to explain the food there, the restaurant and concept, with a great sense of passion. About a minute later the owner shows up and also takes the time to check on how peoples “meals” were. It might not have been much but showed a lot of class taking the time to treat each person grabbing a sample of food as a real customer.

To wrap up, crab cakes were awesome, I am guilty of taking a few more than my share, ahi Tuna Tartar was delectable and we will be heading there this weekend for dinner. If the new chef can cook as well as he can schmooze we should be in for a treat!

Night Cap

Went to Whineo's after a DOV dinner across the street at Sanafir. We where still bit hungry and was craving at least one more drink.

It was a cool little place, not very busy which made it easy for us to converse and felt like we were getting great service.

Again, not too much to this place but a nice little calm escape on a busy Granville street. Don't think it would be a first choice for a dinner or night out in fact, but made for a good plan b. Probably be back again in the future.

A Let Down

I won't rant too long here just the meat and potatoes.

Sanafir is a gorgeous room with a great feel in a up and coming dining district. I have walked by many times in the past and I love the theme and decor. I have read and heard mixed reviews but figured best do decide for myself.

Went there in the first week of DOV. The overall experience wasn't so much bad as just disappointing. Maybe places that have hype to them just have to do more to impress you. I mean the food was ok, even though I left hungry, and the services tailed behind that of a Cactus Club or Milestones. I wouldn't say don't ever go here just try not to have very high expectations.

Overall for the money I feel that you can find some better rooms out there, but maybe you just have to try for yourself.
