Terrible
Submitted Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 3:07pm [Dine in]

Rich Ocean was also my fave dim sum place. We went back to see how the transition fared...My first clue that it was not going to be good was there was only one other table occupied at lunch. When it was Rich Ocean, it was full at lunch & the place is huge!

They had just started offering dim sum again when we went as they realized how much they are hurting & decided to add it back to the menu. The person we were talking to was the owner of Rich Ocean who sold, but now works there for the new owners. He told us the food is terrible now and he tried to get them to keep the same menu but they wouldn't.

Our food is not worth mentioning. The crispy squid was like leather & so salty it was inedible. I will never come back, and I'd be surprised if it stays in business as it is...

Had a business dinner here on Monday night. My boss used to rave about the place and I don't live too far away so I booked it. I haven't been here for at least 10 years when I went with my Italian boyfriend at the time, but I really didn't remember much about it...good or bad...

The restaurant was nice, white linens, big wine bottles on display like Texas Mickeys, but only 2 other tables occupied at 6pm. One of the party was late so the 3 of us started with mineral water...and then house wine which was god awful! CHEAP, CHEAP Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. I didn't order it, but I knew it was going to be bad & it was!

When the 4th arrived we ordered an antipasto platter & mussels for the appy. I enjoyed the olive oil mixture for the bread the most! It had something grainy in it, and parmesan cheese...I enjoyed it. The mussel broth which was with tomatoes was bland & tasteless. The antipasto had a couple of good nibbles...the 3 guys really devoured it. I got a prawn & a piece of salami & one olive...they took care of the rest.

The waiter (new?) very cute, but very stiff & uncomfortable asked if he could tell us about the specials...halibut..blah blah, and then ended with, "Oh, and we have Osso Bucco"...to which I said, "Sold". The others ordered rack of lamb, gnocci special & veal something or other...

Well, I was never so disappointed to find out my osso bucco wasn't veal when it was delivered, it was lamb! It was hard to cut off the bone, really quite chewy & tough, not too mention bland tasting! It was served with 2 tablespoons of risotto & a couple of pieces of grilled zucchini & 1 piece of broccoli. That was it! Terrible! Shameful really! My boss had 4 skinny minny lamb chops for $30. The veal dish had 2 pieces of scallopini, 2 thin, thin pieces with the same veggies but he had a tablespoon of mashed potatoes. The gnocchi looked o.k. No one commented good or bad, though I did voice my dismay about the osso bucco being lamb and not tender!

Dinner was way over priced! Food was way under-whelming! I think we all agreed that this was the last visit we will make here! Service was very good though...but when the bread & olive oil dip are the highlight of the evening...there's nothing more to say...

Possibly best lunch I've had in Vancouver!
Submitted Wednesday, March 4, 2009 - 6:16pm [Dine in]

We went here for lunch today, and this is quite possibly the best lunch I have ever had a Vancouver restaurant! I tried lunch at Market by Jean-George last week & this one wins for my choice, though it is more expensive.

I had the set menu for $24 I think which was an appy & plat du jour. On the set menus you can have an appy & entree or entree & dessert (choices of 3 for appy & dessert). The prices vary for entrees but from $23 - $28. I started with the country duck pate. Very good. Served with mustard, onion jelly, cornichon, pickled onion. Bread basket was delivered with 3 different types, all warm & refilled when entree arrived. My friend had soup of the day which was potato leek & she said it was very tasty.

I orderd the special, which was duck leg with home made fettucine with a tomato confit, with spinach & green beens. The confit was more like a gravy, it was absolutely delicious!!! I did find it a tad salty, but I don't use salt so that may be why. I cleaned the bowl, eating every last bite, then taking bread to mop up the gravy. The bowl was spotless when I was done! My friend had the black cod which she said was wonderful. The table beside us ordered coq au vin, and I seriously wish I would have ordered that! It looked divine - served with spaetzle too! My friend and I seriously debated jabbing our forks into her dish for a taste!

We had coffee/tea after & they brought us complimentary warm madeleines for dessert. I tried one, so tasty but I'm not a dessert gal. My friend polished them off like nobody's business!

Next lunch, I'm coming back & trying the Coq Au Vin!!! Loved lunch!!!!

Lunch is a Great Price!
Submitted Sunday, March 1, 2009 - 12:37am [Dine in]

Went for lunch yesterday. I have to say that lunch is a really good deal. It's $28 for any 2 courses on the menu, not just an appy & and an entree but any 2 courses you want. Dessert is complimentary & there's a choice of 3.

I brought my camera to take pix but unfortunately the batteries were dead! Plating was great. Really eye-catching.

My friend started with tomato soup & then the filet mignon with ginger mushrooms. The soup was good, I had a taste but I wondered if the cheddar was mixed in the soup as it had a ring of oil on the top. It was tasty & the sour dough crouton was nice. I never tried his steak but he said it was "good". It was nicely plated.

I had the black truffle pizza to start followed by the soy-glazed short ribs. The pizza was good, but honestly, I have never had black truffles so can't compare it to anything. The crust was thin & crispy but I wasn't over-whelmed by deliciousness or anything. My friend had a piece and said he didn't like it! The shortrib was chewy, chewy, chewy. I was pretty disappointed! Whenever I see shortribs on a menu I order them, because it's my favourite comfort food. This really let me down...

We both had warm chocolate cake with Tahitian vanilla ice cream for dessert. He said this was his fave of the meal. I just thought it was o.k.

Service was excellent. Everyone we encountered was nice throughout the hotel. With 2 cocktails & 2 glasses of wine, lunch was $122 pre-tip. Speaking of the cocktails. I ordered the blood orange mojito recommended in another review. I thought it was awful! I barely had a sip before we ordered wine! I did sip it down in the straw when the waiter assumed I was staying with the cocktail instead of wine. It was sooo sweet & I just couldn't distinguish orange, let alone blood orange or rum or MINT which appeared to be in the glass! Very disappointed!

I'd try it again just to see if I missed ordering the right dishes, but I was not overly impressed.

Pretty Good Lunch!
Submitted Thursday, December 18, 2008 - 2:41pm [Dine in]

3 of us went for our Xmas lunch. I don't think it's open for lunch normally, only for Christmas...and then only on Thurs. & Fridays. The restaurant is nice, I didn't mind the decor. Versace plates decorate the tables...

We went with the Xmas Lunch menu which was $40 for 3 courses & $20 more for the wine pairings which 2 of us did. They gave me a copy of the menu so I will remember it all!

We started with a cocktail. A Grey Goose martini was $17. My Bombay Sapphire martini was $13. The other had a Stella beer which I didn't see the price for.

We were treated to an amuse bouche of fois gras with a stollen raisin bread. It was a nice bite!

I started with the Cowichan Goat Cheese appetizer which came with garden herbs, pickled beets & citrus. It was paired with a french sauvignon blanc. Pretty tasty, I just thought the beets had way too much vinegar.

The guys had lobster bisque which was the BEST bisque any of us had ever tasted. I was very jealous of their choice & it was served with lobster oil, sour cream, chives & caviar. The wine was a Hess chardonnay.

There were 3 choices offered for the main course. None of us had the Vancouver Island Scallops with organic ratatouille, tomato & basil puree served with Barefoot pinot grigio.

I had the Dry Aged BC Filet Mignon served with sweet potato & chestnuts & oxtail sauce. The wine was J. Lohr cab sauvignon. The steak was cooked perfectly, but I thought it was just ok. My friend who had this same dish, finished in a quarter of the time I did and said he loved it. I just thought the steak was meh.

Other friend had Pan Roasted Steelhead with garden kale, bacon & lemon thyme sauce. It was served with Ayler Kupp Riesling wine. We were surprised to find out it was tuna when it was delivered as we were expecting trout. He said it was delicious and I never did get a bite.

For dessert they got Vanilla Panna Cotta with warm red fruit. It was served with a blackberry wine. They said it was great.

I ordered Chocolate Terrine with crunch meringue & dulce de letce. The wine was a muscat. I let the guys eat my dessert as I'm not much into sweets. They cleaned it up. We all had another cocktail & got some sweet nuts, complimentary as well.

Lunch before tip was $250. A very nice afternoon. We were there for a full 2 hours and were the only customers! One friend said he's definitely going to go back & take his girlfriend. Me & the other said we'll wait and see which restaurant I pick for next Xmas.

What a pleasant surprise!
Submitted Sunday, October 19, 2008 - 4:00pm [Dine in]

I went here tonight and thought it was great! My friend made a reservation a week before & all we could get was 8:30 though I asked her for 7pm. They called & asked her to change it to 8:45 which was fine. They thanked us very much when coming in. The place was packed solid! I had the escargot to start, she had the vegetarian french onion soup...both really good! I loved our cute french waiter! :-) Big smile! For entrees, I had the steak frites - yummy!!! She had portobello mushroom something...(She did go at great lengths to explain how good it was to me knowing I'd write, but I was to into my steak frites to listen! The fries & peppercorn sauce were excellent.) I had a couple of glasses of champagne, she had creme brulee - real tasty - wish I would have had another bite!!! Bill was only $70. They don't take Amex & don't have interac so I did have to run across the street to an ATM. Great dinner! Pleasant surprise! I highly recommend it!!!

Pretty Good!
Submitted Saturday, October 18, 2008 - 2:09pm [Dine in]

Went for the lunch buffet after reading good reviews. I was curious to see what it looked like after Tojo's. It didn't look much different, just more red! I'm no expert on Lebanese cuisine, so I can't offer any thoughts to authenticity or anything like that.

The buffet was pretty good, $11.99 included lemonade & ice tea. I thought the hummus type dips were real good. They had a green salad and a tabouleh which had no bulgar, so it was more like a salsa. They had beef lasagna & sheperds pie, which was strange to me, but funny enough, the two items I liked most! There was steamed chicken, veggies, lots of rices, and a weird dish they called "kebabs" but just seemed like beef stew potatoes without the meat! There was a dessert station too. Really, a decent meal for the price! I can't complain.

It was interesting, and not bad at all, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to return...only because it wasn't my type of food!

Went for lunch with my friend a couple of weeks ago. She knows the owners and has been many times and asked if it was o.k. if she ordered for me? No problem! Restaurant was nice, I liked the open kitchen feel though I was facing the wrong way this visit!

When we arrived, the owner was kiss, kiss, hug, hug with her, parked her car and in we went. The owner dropped us a kobe meatball to start. Very good! My friend ordered bruschetta, & a platter (that she made up herself) of 2 types of pasta, veal piccata & roasted chicken.

Veal was great! Roasted chicken, was...well..., roasted chicken, however the skin was nice & crispy so gets bonus marks. The pastas were forgettable in my opinion. I think she ordered the penne & the carbonara. I know I was really unimpressed with both...a little too "al dente" maybe...not sure, too bland? Can't put my finger on it...but to even remember, I had to go to the website to see what pastas they had!

I would go again when in the neighbourhood, but it didn't knock me out to go out of my way to re-visit.

Noodles were great!
Submitted Monday, September 8, 2008 - 10:33pm [Dine in]

Just went for lunch. Had heard the beef roll had to be ordered, so we tried that. Was pretty good, but I know my expectations were high from all I had heard/read. I had the Kung Pao with draggin noodles. Kung Pao was ok...I've had better, but the noodles were really good. Friend had General Tsao's chicken, which was pretty tasty with the bite I tried. I'll go back again, since I work close by.

What did amuse me that day was watching most of the other diners eating soup, all had napkins wiping off the sweat on their faces. Gave me a good laugh!

Don't order from here!
Submitted Monday, August 4, 2008 - 11:25pm [Dine in]

I got the menu...new management. Little Johnny's has always just been good when you're drunk food, would never order it sober, but I did this time as I saw the new management menu...

Big Mistake!!! I should have suspected when the chinese man & I had such a difficult conversation...I ordered beef souvlaki & spicy kalamari.

Order showed up. No spicy kalamari which is usually peppers on it and you pay extra for it. Beef souvlaki was literally little tiny cubes of beef that was inedible, like leather & rancid and the greek salad was forgotten. I phoned. Chinese man told me he'd put hot sauce in the bag for my kalamari when they delivered my greek salad. Pretended he didn't understand me when I complained about the souvlaki. Also the tsatziki sauce was put in with the souvlaki container & kalamari container & was liquid when delivered. Also the container was was teeny - like what would hold red chili flakes, not enough for tsatziki! Just gross!

When the greek salad arrived, I tried to tell the driver to tell the manager/owner how bad the food was, which he said he would but he had just started and this was first night.

Greek salad had no tomatoes!!!! I will not be ordering from here again until I see a new menu saying "new management"!!!

Dim Sum o.k.
Submitted Monday, August 4, 2008 - 9:42pm [Dine in]

I'm not an expert at dim sum, but this was not good. Normally we love sticky rice & both of us left it. Could not even get the potstickers down they were so bad. The shrimp stuffed eggplant was dreadful, shrimp cake blah. The spicy squid was not bad, but it was cold when dropped off. Had 8 dishes between 2 and did not take home any leftovers & there was lots! Was not impressed & would not return though service was nice & restaurant was o.k.

Couldn't rate the ambience correctly, wish DineHere would let you leave it unanswered if it doesn't apply.

I ordered 5 dishes. All were extremely bland & boring and I would never order here again! It truly was terrible.

Delivery took an hour but I'm used to that, that was fine, but I hate wasting money, especially on chinese food, where you're stuck with leftovers! Do not waste your time on this place!

I end up going here quite a lot for lunch as reps find it the place to go in my neighbourhood!

The only thing I can rave about is the AHI tuna appy, it is so yummy! I order it everytime we go.

I also one time had a great NY steak with mashed potatoes, but on most occasions the steaks have just been ok. I would never, personally, pay to eat here...burgers have always been just average, salads are not bad...

Haven't been since Feenie's been on board, but we'll see...

Submitted Friday, July 18, 2008 - 6:56pm [Dine in]

I have liked their delivery, have had it maybe 5 times or so and it's always been good! Never have been inside the restaurant. I've never had a problem with any of the items delivered and it's always been hot (if it should be), and fresh. I consider it about 1 step up from "Sushi Bang" on W. Broadway that doesn't deliver and only takes cash! It's not great sushi, but it certainly is edible & satisfying, and did I mention that they deliver?! No complaints!

P.S. I only left the ambiance rating as poor, as Dinehere wouldn't allow "Unknown"...

I like Martini's. We go once in awhile for lunch, and I order dinner every once in awhile. Delivery is incredibly slow though. The last time I ordered veal parmesan, it was so stuck to the container, I could not pry it out! It was seriously baked waaaay too long!!

I like the calamari, & sometimes the garlic cheddar prawns. The problem with the food is how inconsistent it is. Sometimes it's really good, and sometimes inedible. Never order the appy called Crispy dry ribs, I mean, you expect ribs, not like scraps of ribs in big huge pieces, ewww, I can't believe they even serve it, it's truly disgusting!

Eh, Take it or Leave it...
Submitted Thursday, February 21, 2008 - 12:19am [Dine in]

Interior was great, but I love all "Steakhouse" interiors. I was on a "rare" rep paid "dinner"...they usually only pay lunch, so when dinner was offered, I chose Gotham, as I've always wanted to go...

Had a drink in the lounge first. Can't complain because I had a cosmo...enough said...

Moved to the dinner area! We ordered oysters..mmmmmm. truly delish, don't even know that I've had em as good as that at Monk's or Joe Forte's...(personally, I hate Monk's but like the Oysters...yeh, maybe even feel that way about Joe's too, come to think about it!!!!!

Sides were: Lyonaisse potatoes, and asparagus...also yum! The potatoes really, REALLY were good!!!!

Then, 2 filets with lobster...eh, meh....not good in my opine. If I was paying, I might have protested! Lobster & steak were good....but seriously, I don't even like "filet" so please make it melt in my mouth. We both left a quarter of our steaks, and rep even agreed that they weren't up to par. I usually order a bone-in cut that is more flavourable...anyway, I'm digressing now thinking about when I'll find the "Ultimate steak" in Vancouver. If you know better, I'd pass and move along....and please tell me where the "great" steak is in Vancouver!!!!! I've been to Hy's and, no, not there either!

Done with Joe's...
Submitted Friday, February 8, 2008 - 11:34pm [Dine in]

This USED to be my fave restaurant in Vancouver. The first time I had their warm seafood salad with fennel, I was absolutely blown away! I have been here mabye twice a year over the last 5 years, but we don't go back now...

When we first started going (my rep takes me on his expense account), we had truly delish meals. He always took me for my bday & Xmas. This is the first year, I changed restaurants...

The last time we went, lunch turned into 3 hours! They did bring an amuse bouche, but seriously, we all had to get back to work. My friend ordered the "fish duo" special they have at lunch, and I swear, it WAS an amuse bouche, not an entree - 2 bites and he was finished!!!!

Yes, the oysters are great. Their house wine is great! The ambience is great! However, service is slow, food is way overpriced & crap now!

I'm disappointed to write this about Joe's, but there are far better restaurants in Vancouver with better value. I don't even pay, but I felt bad for my friend's expense account. If you have a $200 lunch & leave unsatisfied, and late to get back to work...go elsewhere...we do now!

We go here for dim sum at least once a week. If you order before noon, I think most of the dim sum is $2.75 and for that, it's great! It's not carts, and the dim sum is really good!

We often order off the regular menu too, especially when there's lots of us. I highly recommend the green beans!!! I'm not a veggie girl, but these are delicious!!! I also recommend the eggplant w/shrimp dim sum. No, it's not on the reduced pricing menu, but it's truly delish!

I've started taking my son here when he's not working on the weekends, and for $20 we're stuffed!!!! We usually have left overs...you can't beat it for the price & the quality of the food.

It's always busy! The oriental dim sum fans certainly know where to go!

I've been here twice for lunch, both on work reps client accounts and am very happy about that. The restaurant is nice, typical steakhouse. I have a fascination with Steak houses, trying always to find the best one! I can tell you, it's not Hy's in Vancouver.

Hy's in Oahu, is probably one of the best steaks, salad, etc. I've had, but I did pay dearly for it.

Cheesebread is yummy, but it is free in Hawaii, not here. The first lunch I had their NY strip & I was so underwhelmed, I decided to never return. A different rep @ Xmas picked Hy's so I went for another try...

I honestly can't even remember what steak I ordered. I know it wasn't the NY strip though. I ordered Caesar salad, bernaise, & I think a ribeye...I'm not a filet girl, so that's really the only thing left! Again, ugh! Caesar salad was crap!!! Steak & bernaise were both crap. Wine was good & so was our waitress & busboy, and water boy. I would NEVER pay for a meal here!

Thank goodness for expense accounts!!!!
