Delicious Food & Desserts
Submitted Monday, April 19, 2010 - 11:43pm [Dine in]

First off, I'd like to say that the organic, vegan, raw food made here is extremely tasty. I chose the lasagna and coconut cream pie and ordered it to go. I took a seat and watched the kitchen through the see-through glass and had some water to drink while I waited. Unfortunately it took about 45 minutes before it was ready to go and was a little disappointed with the delay.

I was a little wary of the lasagna as I haven't eaten too much raw food in my life but it was amazing!! It tasted very close to cooked lasagna (it was cold, as it was raw) and would definitely order it again. The pie was also amazing and would also order it again as well.

The prices are higher than you'd expect but the food makes it worth it. The store is set up strangely with two cash registers at either end of the store with no indication where you order or pick up your food. The service is helpful but I would describe it as... laid back?

Highly recommended for the taste, just make sure you have lots of time before you order.

Awesome food and value in a cafeteria!
Submitted Sunday, December 13, 2009 - 2:04pm [Dine in]

I've been to Hon's more times than I can count over the past decade and love it every time. Being a vegan, it's always a delight to see the huge sign hanging over one of the kitchen's proclaiming 'Vegetarian'! They even have a separate vegetarian menu (look for the green one). Everything I've ever ordered has been extremely tasty and the price usually works out to about $10 each or less especially if you have a decent sized group of people, with leftovers!

Okay, now the bad parts (well, some may see it as bad). The service is QUICK QUICK QUICK but extremely utilitarian. The system they have worked out for serving food is fast and efficient but leaves no room for personal interaction. I don't mind it and even find it fascinating but it may throw some people off who feel like chatting at lengths with their servers. Also, just a warning, they WILL NOT come back to check that everything is okay with the food. If there is a problem, you will have to flag someone down.

The next issue some people may have is that the restaurant has the appearance of a cafeteria, which I find quite amusing. Long sparse simple tables in a large open room with little to no decor with your green tea is served in plastic drinking cups (which is regularly filled!). This may be extremely off putting to someone who doesn't find amusement in bright garish lighting and a loud open room of eating customers.

Also, I've been to the other two Hon's restaurants (Chinatown, Richmond & New West) but they don't hold a candle to this one in terms of efficiency and quality of food.

Sushi!
Submitted Wednesday, May 27, 2009 - 7:13pm [Dine in]

It's not much to look at on the inside but free tea and miso soup is a nice touch for each meal. Being a vegetarian they have lots of options and will make the food without fish flakes (on the agadashi tofu) and mayo (in the sushi rolls) if you ask. The waitress explained to me that they get lots of vegetarians there so they are used to making those changes.

The staff is always friendly and accommodating and the sushi chef always says hello and goodbye when you enter and exit. They have good hours and are open every day.

It's very decent sushi at a decent price. It's local for me so I frequent it often. Yum!

Mexican for vegans!
Submitted Monday, May 4, 2009 - 1:31am [Dine in]

As far as I could tell the whole menu was able to vegan-ised with substitutes such as vegan cheese and vegan mayo. There were even some AMAZING vegan brownies for desert. I will definitely be going back just for the brownies.
The decor was just a step up from a diner but was acceptable. The service was very friendly. The food was decent enough but I think I'll order a different dish next time before I judge the overall food quality. I didn't enjoy what I ordered but that was not due to bad cooking, more my personal taste.

Excellent Sushi! Get There Early...
Submitted Monday, February 4, 2008 - 10:38pm [Dine in]

You can't beat this sushi but be prepared to wait in line. There is a lineup outside the restaurant every weekday before they open. Luckily you can write your name down on a sheet if there is a line up and they'll call your name when a table comes available.

The service is blazing fast and the food is great but get there as quick as you can before they open.

Love of Hiphop A Must
Submitted Monday, February 4, 2008 - 10:29pm [Dine in]

This restaurant is a strange mix indeed. Excellent vegetarian/vegan food mixed with blaring hiphop/gangster rap mixed with politically charged slogans plastered on the wall and a dash of horrible service.

I've been here many many times and keep coming back for the amazing food and amazing prices. I think the only time I've ever had half decent service was about two visits ago. I think it was a new person that just started and he hadn't been told to give poor service. The down side to the service is that they miss your orders and they take forever, the upside is that they don't bother to bring you your cheque forever leaving you to chat as long as you'd like.

Well recommended but be prepared.
