Rocco's Deli228 Schoolhouse Stret unit 1, Coquitlam, Coquitlam
Great little deli that is easy to miss.

This Italian deli is right at the north side corner opposite the Slivercity movie theater on Schoolhouse Street in Coquitlam. Lots of seating. Very friendly and helpful staff. Hand made sandwiches, desserts, coffee and other products. This deli also offers groceries. Great little place to get a sandwich before going to see a movie. Highly recommended. I will go back often.

Server licked her fingers!

We went in to order some deli. The quality is above average but pricey. The young woman who served us licked her fingers so she could pick up the sheets of paper they lay down to weigh the meat. Disgusting and a health code violation! I complained to the manager. He said it was wrong but probably just a habit from home. Excuse me. These people are handling food. It is unacceptable period. As customers you can become the victim of all kinds of nasty things by improper handling, including Hepatitis. If you go there make sure to ask your server to go wash her hands!

I grew up in Montreal so I am familiar with what the benchmark in Bagels is. Before people rave about this place they should first try some bagels fresh out of the oven at St. Viateur Bagel, Mount Royal Bagel, Queen Mary Bagel etc. etc. Rock Salt bagels would have a hard time competing in Montreal. Yes they are better than many places out west but that doesn't make them rave worthy. Firstly they are still too thick and doughy. So when you bite into it you get too much doughy center compared to crispy exterior. They are too heavy and not light enough. It takes years to develop a proper bagel making technique. They are still too much like a bun. They are also not crispy enough. Some of the ones I bought were sesame. Well the sesame seeds were not even toasty and crisp. That is a part of the flavor! Within hours they are no longer nice without maybe toasting them. I bought a half dozen for almost what I could buy a whole dozen for at St. Viateur. I also bought some smoked meat. The price was ridiculous to the point of insulting. But I wanted to try some. Hey this is brisket not Wagyu beef!! They better improve their sourcing because I can buy real Montreal smoked meat for less than half that price. YES right here in Vancouver!

Service is slow. To get my smoked meat she pulled out several small chunks wrapped in plastic bags. This caused discussion with other staff before showing them to me too choose. Both options were overly fatty. She sliced the meat extremely thin. Probably because when you order a sandwich it is paper thin. The texture of the meat was lost. The woman flinging the bagels seemed totally uninterested in what she was doing. Once flung she just walked back and sat down again to continue what she was doing. Not very inspiring quality control.

Not as good as it used to be.

I treated my family to one of our favorite places. 6 of us. Seating is strained and could only find a couple of tables right by the very smelly washroom. People can barely squeeze past you to get in. We ordered our usual favorite chicken shawarma plates and one lamb kebab plate. The usually fabulous rice was now quite oily. The chicken shawarma was not as tasty as before and much more yellow. Tumeric? The lamb kebob was grissly, tough, raw and inedible. WOW!!!!!

Sorry I can't recommend this place any more. It has gone from great to very mediocre. Has the ownership changed?? The very stale faced indifferent woman taking our order was clearly new to us.

If you ignore my review and venture there make sure you get good seating or sit outside. Next door is a great looking place we will go to from now on.

Too bad. We used to really like this place.

I will never eat here again! What a mistake!!
Submitted Tuesday, July 1, 2014 - 11:18am [Dine in]

I tried the Deluxe Wally burger. I throw away better food than that. It was the worst burger I have had in decades. The beef did not seem like beef. I tasted funny and was dry and tough. They slopped some cheap sauce on it which seemed like a mix of mayo and ketchup. Whoopie how creative!! It dripped all over. I had to scrape it off. I guess they are trying to kill the taste of the crappy burger. The blonde girl assembling the sandwiches had very poor little school girl attitude. If she doesn't like her job she should find better. The Asian girl taking the orders was clueless. She spelled my name wrong. The blonde couldn't bother to figure out why my burger just sat there and made no attempt to locate the order. The girl taking the orders couldn't remember my name or my order. Only when I realized it must be mine and spoke up did they suddenly wake up. CLUELESS!!!

I cannot recommend this place for any reason. I will never go back!!!!

Schwartz's Deli3895 Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Montreal
This is no longer the great smoked meat place it was for 80 years.
Submitted Thursday, November 14, 2013 - 8:39pm [Dine in]

I have been eating at Schwartz's since the 1960's. I cannot count the number of sandwiches I have eaten there. Every sandwich was awesome. Every sandwich was tasty and tender. Not anymore!! I have attempted to eat at many other delis as well but always felt that Schwartz's set the standard that all others were compared to. Thousands of people have done the same you can see on many blogs. My wife and I went twice in October. The first time we were stunned by the horrible sandwich we got. It was completely tasteless, dry and hard to chew. WOW!! None of the original cooks were there. This was a whole new crew. I had read the place sold for 10 million reportedly to Celine Dion and others. Celine Dion had owned "Nickels" and obviously knew something about smoked meat. Normally I would never return to a place after such an experience. But I had been going there for some 45 years. I hoped this was just an off day or maybe a trainee. We went back several days later to try again. Same terrible sandwich!! I had to believe the meat was way overcooked and under brined or something. I have over steamed smoked meat before and it usually becomes crumbly but not dry and hard to chew. It must be the preparation of the meat. I overheard the cooks talking to one of the waiters about how the meat should be and how to slice it. The cooks obviously don't know!! Anyone who knew what smoked meat should be like would never serve that meat. I would throw it in the garbage.

This is a tragedy. Celine Dion and others might legally own it but Schwartz's belongs to all of us. For decades we put up with the grubby place and the over aggressive service. But we all accepted this for the privilege of eating there. It was like a shrine.

Don't let these people with money get away with this!! Stand up for your rights. Object. Send back your sandwich if it is subpar. Tell everyone you can. Post reviews everywhere if you share the same experience we had.

What's more maddening is I have made my own smoked meat so often I know exactly how to fix their problem. It is not that hard.

There is something very suspicious going on here!!! Where have all the staff gone?? They claim to be using the same recipe as 1928!! Baloney!! The briskets in the window don't even look the same. If memory serves me Nickels did not do very well and had to close some locations. I ate at the Ottawa one a few times and found it very mediocre.

Well sadly I can no longer recommend Schwartz's. It is not just a little bit worse. It is now the worst smoked meat in North America I'm guessing. If you do go there as an experiment return the sandwich if it is no good. Don't let them just rely on tourists or people who don't know what smoked meat should be like.

Let your anger be heard people!

Casual, inexpensive and healthy fast food hand made and very tasty. EXCELLENT!!
Submitted Saturday, November 9, 2013 - 4:29pm [Dine in]

This place is easy to walk past since it does not have a large street frontage. It is a very unassuming little restaurant/shop. You can have a meal or buy fresh organic meats etc. My wife and I both had the chicken donair sandwiches. They also take the chicken a step further by stir frying it with onions on a grill. The bread was a paper thin tortilla style they make themselves and not the typical pita bread. The sandwich was HUGE with lots of chicken. The chicken is organic which is always a plus. The spicing and topping were very tasty. The sandwich was $6.00 including tax. WE both agreed this was one of the best donairs in the city. They had many interesting items on the menu that we will definitely try. We will be back many times and will bring family and friends. I HIGHLY recommend this place. If you are on the drive and looking for a casual, inexpensive, healthy tasty meal go here.

Very very good Dim Sum.
Submitted Saturday, March 16, 2013 - 6:05pm [Dine in]

Let me start off by saying my wife and I (and Family) have eaten DimSum hundreds of times in many restaurants and in many cities. I would add that Vancouver has some of the best Dim Sum in North America. I hear that Hong Kong is very good but I cannot compare since I have not visited it. I will tell you that you have to judge based on value for your dollar not price alone or quality alone. I also judge my Dim Sum based on 2 dishes. Har Gow and Sui Mai. We ordered 5 items. The Har Gow (shrimp dumpling) don't seem to available on the carts. You order it and it comes in maybe 7 minutes. I think Har Gow is fragile and lousy if it gets cold. Their Har Gow was moist, steaming hot, tender, creamy, large, tasty and pink. WOW!!! 5 stars!! Next we ate the Sui MAi (pork/shrimp dumpling). These came on the cart. They were large, tender and tasty. I felt the pork and shrimp were high quality. The taste was wonderful!! Again 5 Stars!!. Next we had the spare ribs. These were wonderful. Tender, meaty and flavourful. I prefer mine with more garlic but these were TASTY!!! OK 4 1/2 stars. We had the sticky rice wraps. They were Excellent. Tasty rice with great ingredients. Ample tasty ground pork, slices of chinese sausage and beans. 4.75 Stars!! Lastly we had a dish of rice with chicken. This comes with either ribs, chicken, beef or barbeque pork. It also had two large slices of delicious mushroom and two large pieces of brocoli. It had lots of tender tasty chicken pieces. If I had a criticism it would be the chicken is chopped randomly leaving some sharp carhds of chicken bone. Eat with caution. The rice was tender, loose and tasty. It was served with a sauce that I am not sure how to describe other than YUMMY!! GREAT!!

Unfortunatley we were only two so had to pass up some amazing looking dishes. Eggplant stuffed with shrimp, Deep fried shrimp stuffed wonton, shrimp wonton in a broth, etc. We will DEFINITELY go back!!

The service was fast and friendly. They refilled the tea pot twice. Two staff roamed around and took care of the little things like extra napkins, filling tea and picking up dishes.

Dim Sum for 2 with tax and large tip was $28.00. I highly recommend this place. My wife and I, grandkids, family etc. will be going back often. I believe this is an undiscovered (lousy location) gem in Coquitlam. If you want to experience solid, tasty Dim Sum by a chef who obviously is trying to serve high quality traditional food, dine here. (No I'm not Asian!!, born in Belgium!!)

I have been several times for breakfast and lunch. The service is always oustanding. The first time we had pasta it was fantastic. We had a spaghetti bolognese and a spaghetti with vegetable/tomato sauce. The sauces were great. There were tons of vegetables in my wifes dish. It was so good we went back and ordered the same thing. This time the portions were barely two thirds the size. There were very few fresh vegeables in my wifes dish. My plate had very little Bolognese sauce on it. It is clearly hit and miss maybe depending on who is cooking. They need to be consistent with both the quality and the portion sizes. Overall I recommend it but avoid the busy periods because you will wait a long time.

Good food but rude deli server.

Overall this is a good shop. The quality and selection is very good. The owners really try hard to offer a good product and are very knowledgeable about their foods. The owners will offer advice if you ask. The only negative is a woman who works in the deli area. She is positivley rude. She clearly displays attitude in the way she handles your food and talks to you. She is constantly leaning over and wispering comments to the other staff. This store is owned by very good people. I don't know how they are missing this problem.

My wife and I made the tragic mistake of dining here recently. We were met by the most unfreindly indifferent staff I have ever run into. That should have immediately triggered a walk out. We stayed and ordered Dim Sum from a menu. It was AWFUL!! We eat Dim Sum regularly. Vancouver has some of the best in North America. NOT THIS PLACE. The Har Gow (Shrimp dumpling) completely fell apart when trying to pick them up. There was no attempt to make a proper shrimp filling. Just a few shrimp wrapped in a very loose wrapper. The flavour of the shrimp was very bad and fishy. Next we had the Sticky rice wrap. It had no flavor at all. It seemed like it was just some tasteless ground pork steamed in some rice. We added some soy sauce but this was the most salty cheap soy sauce I have ever had. We next had steamed BBQ pork buns. Again these were falling appart. When we removed the paper on the bottom the filling just fell out. We also had the Siu Mai (Pork dumpling). The pork was very hard to chew. It was some crappy grissle of pork. The taste was really bad. There were a few shrimp bits but again these tasted off and fishy. Our last item Rice bowl with chicken never arrived. After checking this finally came after a 20 minute wait. They had short cut the preparation however. It was just a bowl of plain rice with a few pieces of chicken they had boiled in plain water with some soy sauce on top. It was disgusting. Obviously they had screwed up and their solution was to rush together something that looked like a rice dish. It was inedible. We left. Our tip reflected their crap food and indifferent attitude. ZERO!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!

The food quality is mixed. Locals who claim to like this must never have travelled much. The ribs were tasteless and certainly not fall off the bone. The beef was tender, moist and tasty. The chicken was dry and bland. The pulled pork was so dry and stringy it looked like an old birdsnest. The french fries were hard little sticks. The sauce and coleslslaw were good. The potato salad was much worse than safeway potato salad!! Maybe it was old but you couldn't get it off the fork. AWFUL. The price is too high for what you get. The service is none existent. The girl at the cash was very rude. Amazing in this economy. The owners are clearly absent.
