Great server, great food, great time

My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary at the Boathouse this weekend and we were both so pleasantly surprised! I've heard mixed reviews on the place so I was a little nervous about trying it out, but we ended up having a great experience. We made reservations for 2 on a busy Friday night and were sat at a lovely table with a perfect view of the bay, even though we were a little late! Our server was Robert and he was a true master of his craft. Very professional, entertaining and friendly. He even arranged our very large order so that it was the most affordable, as we wanted both seafood AND steak in full portions. To start we enjoyed bread and some great appetizers - delicious bacon-wrapped scallops that were perfectly cooked and not greasy at all, actually quite delicate (surprising!) Garden salad was dressed just enough for flavour but again, someone in the back there has a really light touch and it was just right. The asparagus could've used a tad more seasoning but otherwise it was also delicious. Our main course was a full crab, full lobster and one steak mignon. Everything was absolutely delicious. We asked for the steak rare and it was indeed VERY rare, but still yummy! After our meal, we stepped outside briefly and returned to a fully cleaned table with just our drinks remaining (nice touch.) All of the staff was so warm and attentive. But perhaps the highlight of our evening was a complimentary dessert for our anniversary and Robert breaking into full song with "That's Amore" and a unanimous clap from the whole restaurant. Hilarious.

We will definitely be back.

Luxurious snacks

Went there for a girlfriend's birthday a year ago. It had just opened but there were barely any kinks at all! Great little casual simple atmosphere. Our party was sat at a long chef's table near the back of the room. The chalkboard with all the menu options is a really cute touch. Service was very friendly, professional and informative.

So if you like snacking on meats and cheese, you will LOVE this place. Presentation really allows you to appreciate delicious refined flavours classically combined. Amazing condiments are the icing on the cake. Wine pairings all worked very well.

Also, I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't come down there because of the neighbourhood. Gastown is an eclectic place, a blend of old and new, rich and poor. It's important to acknowledge the existence of this community, for the good and the bad, and what it means to the people that live and work there. What better way than to find this little hidden treasure? (Also, Blood Alley, despite the name, is nothing to be too scared of as it's an extremely high traffic area with many other restaurants and bars nearby and that's also regularly monitored by police.)

Went on a double date there in the Fall with some good friends. Awesome, lively atmosphere as soon as you walk in. You instantly feel that it's Friday night. All the staff were really attentive and on their game. We were greeted promptly and luckily only had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table.

We had a pitcher of mojitos which was so minty and delicious! We tried tons of different things from the menu, about three courses worth, and honestly, everything was delicious. Also, try the special tequila service they offer!

Had such a good time and will definitely be back.

It was the polenta that threw me off
Submitted Wednesday, April 9, 2008 - 12:28am [Dine in]

I love Habit. I think it's casual yet chic. My BF and I went there last summer and really enjoyed the smorgasbord of tapas we ordered. The perogies are sooo good, and I've enjoyed the fried tofu and desserts as well. We went last weekend and the service was still as good as I remember. Had perogies of courses, and some wings. Then we tried the pheasant ragu polenta which we both found very strange, bland and mushy. I should have said something to the server but my BF just kept eating it.

Other than that, I would give it another shot.

So-so

Whew, there's a major debate going on here! May I pipe in?

I've gone to Foundation a few times and agree that the food is great, but only when exectuted properly. I had one positive dining experience there, but the few times I've returned, the food has been rather sloppy (i.e. burnt nachos that took over half and hour!) When asked if we could send the nachos back for new ones, the server was cold and grumbled as she removed our plate, only to bring back a new stack of nachos, ALSO COMPLETELY BURNT! This kind of thing is just not right, especially when dealing with well-meaning customers who don't mean any harm, they simply want the quality they deserve.

I think it's harsh of SfumatoPants to criticize the staff for their "style" or what have you - that really has nothing to do with anything and is a pretty crazy stereotype. However, if the staff members of Foundation really want to show 'em, then step up to the plate and provide outstanding service in all areas, all the time, to EVERYONE, not just the loyal regulars.

Ultra-chic but menu needs fine-tuning
Submitted Friday, April 4, 2008 - 1:00pm [Dine in]

A girlfriend of mine went to Yew for Dine Out and had a lovely time. I have to say, the decor of the restaurant is breathtaking. Sky-high ceilings, polished wood, ultra-chic details. Our server was really sweet and professional. We started with a basket of bread which I wasn't overly thrilled with (a little too tough!). Appetizers were nice - my friend had the soup and I had the beet salad. Both good dishes. We then got two orders of pasta for our main courses which, sad to say, were extremely bland and disappointing. Luckily, both our server and the Maitre-D were happy to exchange them for delicious salmon and lamb entrees. Dessert was a brownie with ice cream which was good, but again, nothing to write home about. Overall, love the atmosphere and the service - not too excited about the food.

My BF introduced me to this place when we first started dating and fellas, I have to tell you, if you're looking to woo a lady, make sure to bring her to this place! Book a reservation for two in the cushion room. Sooo sexy and romantic and the food is amazing. We've returned to this place time and time again for the great atmosphere, service and especially the food! So delicious. Also, order a "Mighty Horsemen" cocktail - delicious pineapply type drink with tons of booze in it, served in a big basin with two long straws to share with your honey. We've had the same server both times, a Mid-Eastern fellow who's extremely sincere, natural and professional at what he does. Definitely one of my favourite restaurants in the city.
