Recently went for a 2nd try at Onyx, was unfortunately disappointed.
Our first visit was shortly after they opened, and while the food was decent, it was overpriced. We eat at Gotham in Vancouver fairly regularly, and the prices were more or less the same as Gotham's, but the quality definitely wasn't there. The service was disorganized, but they had just opened, so we figured that was par for the course.
As we live in White Rock and would love to have a higher-end steakhouse close by, we decided to give it another try, and it was more or less the same thing.
It wasn't bad, but not worth the price. I found the food pretty much on par with The Keg, but 30-40% more expensive, and the service isn't close.
A few things that were just confusing:
- dull, un-serrated steak knives? made the meat seem even tougher than it was
- the place is tiny, it can't hold more than 50 or so people, yet our waiter seemed to disappear for 15 minute intervals?
On the positive side: nice atmosphere, cozy & warm, and their wine list is one of the best in the area.
Not bad, not great, definitely overpriced.
