Great sandwiches
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 4:11pm [Dine in]

Went to Basil's to use a Groupon (2 sandwiches, pops, chips). Free street parking.

This has got to be one of the best sandwiches I have eaten in a long time. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. You get to watch them prepare it in front of you. Fresh ciabatta bread toasted and sliced, loaded with pulled pork, real cheese and coleslaw. You can choose your in-house made sauces (quite a few to pick) to complete the sandwich. Just the sandwich would have been filling enough even without the chips and pop.

Staff were nice and it seems the owner is onsite all the time.

Great sandwich, good value, and good staff. Seating is limited so maybe aim for after lunch.

Will definitely add to the lunch rotation.

Chronic Tacos980 Granville Street, Vancouver
disappointing experience
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 4:01pm [Dine in]

Had a Groupon for 2 tacos, 2 chips and salsa, and 2 drinks.

Although delicious the tacos provided using the Groupon were very small, approximately 4 bites each. The chips and salsa was good, except they only give you the equivalent of a large tablespoon of salsa. Two fountain pops were as advertised.

The staff @ Chronic Tacos have to learn to respect their customers a bit more if they expect repeat ones. Calling the 40ish year old man ordering in front of me "buddy" 3 times isn't going to win you any points.

Turned in my Groupon to the cashier, and he advised me I owed another $2.10. I asked him about it and was told "you know...for tax and stuff". That's the first time I have ever been charged tax on top of a Groupon.

I felt it was a mediocre value $11 ($9 voucher + $2 at till). Having paid the full $18 plus tax would have been a complete rip off.

Do not expect to return.

Good food, average prices, bad decor
Submitted Saturday, May 22, 2010 - 6:54pm [Dine in]

I went here tonight based on the fantastic review from the poster below. I found the food was very good and FRESH, the chef could even be heard chopping the carrots and broccoli for my meal. Vegetables were clean.

The value was average at best: $9 before tax for a 3 item combo. Rice counts as one item.

The decor is very outdated and reminded me of the Austin Heights Diner. Tables looked clean but were a tiny bit sticky. Takeout would be the only option if I return here.

The owner then accidentally charged my Visa $94.00 instead of $9.40...hopefully this doesn't show up on my credit card statement!

Roll sizes seem to be smaller
Submitted Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - 6:13pm [Dine in]

I placed a take out order today of 2 smoked salmon cream cheese rolls and 2 dynamite rolls. When I picked them up the bag seemed a little lighter then the last time I got takeout here. Upon opening them at home the rolls look noticeably smaller and I finished all 4 rolls with no problem. This is NOT the Sushi California I remember!!

You would think after spending $17 on rolls that you would be full!

Great steaks!
Submitted Saturday, January 23, 2010 - 11:16pm [Dine in]

Arrived at about 8pm on a Friday night and were seated right away. My gorgeous dining companion and I both ordered their signature peppercorn steak with mashed potatoes.

We had champagne while we waited, and were able to watch the chefs in action through the semi-private kitchen window. It is nice to know they have nothing to hide back there!

Food: Our steaks arrived nicely presented with the meat snuggled up to the mashed potatoes with veggies gently perched on the spuds. The steak itself was incredibly tender and a knife was hardly needed to cut into this prime piece of meat. The peppercorn sauce was a nice touch to this dish.

For dessert we had the sorbet and creme brule. Both were great and the sorbet makes for a nice palate cleanser.

Service: Spot on. Our waiter was outgoing and funny, also knew when we needed refills or our plates cleared. We never had to ask for anything! The owner (Jean) was visible throughout the evening and made sure all the guests were taken care of.

We will definitely be back!
