Burger Nirvana
Submitted Sunday, February 12, 2006 - 12:53am [Dine in]

Forget about those corporate burger chains. This is the real thing. Delicious burgers, so juicy you'll need a shower afterwards. Great fries, and the deep fried mushrooms are the stuff of dreams. This is absolutely the best burger in BC. The shakes are super thick and tasty.

The ambience is not much, unless you like picnic tables and talking through a window to make your order, but they have take out. Worth the drive.

Cheshire cheese is named for a kind of British cheese that is creamy and bland. A bit salty, but a good firm cheese.

So too with the Cheshire Cheese restaurant. Lots of traditional fare like fish and chips, bangers and mash, toad in the hole, and shepherds pie. Nothing to write mum about, but good solid food. The curries are terrible, but otherwise the menu is about what you would expect. A nice variety of popular beers, and they have Strongbow cider, plus some local wines. A good place to go on a rainy Sunday.

This place has the Brit fare I grew up on. Hearty portions, guaranteed to clog the arteries and fill the belly. Try the mixed grill. The restaurant is a clutter of UK souvenirs and pictures of the HRH's, but Stella is a great hostess, chatty but not obtrusive.

Not haut cuisine, but hot, cheap, and very filling. You'll be homesick for blighty even if you've never been east of Winnipeg. Not fancy. Not for dieters. Not IHOP.

Fun, funky, funkadelic
Submitted Saturday, February 11, 2006 - 11:51pm [Dine in]

I've been going to the Eatery for a dozen years. Every time I go the staff is different, except for the host, Randy. He's an Asian Elvis, ageless and always hip. They have some truly creative sushi that you just can't get anywhere else. Like the Andy Warhol. Try the dragon sauce! Besides sushi, they have noodles, curry, tempura and lots of other tasty tidbits. The desert menu includes wicked fried banana and ice cream. Beer specials vary.

A great place to feast with your friends. Not a good place for a quiet dinner, and prepare for a lineup at peak times. Funkalicious!

Not so good
Submitted Saturday, February 11, 2006 - 11:18pm [Dine in]

I took some friends to Moldovanos because I've seen their adverts and because Baci (across the street) was full. Wow, was I disappointed. The service was slow and the servers were surly. The food, when it arrived, was a mess. The "traditional" roast lamb was was mushy and covered in a super-salty red sauce of undetermined origin. The rest of the meal was uninspired. The souvlaki was charred and dry. The seafood pasta was a wet slop. My friends all ordered different stuff, so we got to see a wide selection from the menu. The consensus at our table was this: Stay away.

Great variety of Mediterranean menu items. Pizza, souvlaki, steak and lamb dishes. Pasta and seafood too. Big portions, well prepared and fresh. Reasonably priced. Friendly staff.

I was looking for a restaurant in Coquitlam that didn't have a huge lineup out front (not easy on a Saturday night), and I came across this place as I was driving back towards Vancouver. A very pleasant surprise. I will be back for more!

Big meal, you'll get hungry in line.
Submitted Wednesday, January 18, 2006 - 12:20am [Dine in]

I go here when the weather is nice because I hate standing in the rain. The staff are harried and the line is crazy long, but if you can wait it out, the food comes in huge portions and the sauces are pretty good. I got the pen once, but it was a struggle to eat the whole plate. As for the pasta, it could be better. It is cooked properly, but the quality is so so. Focus on the sauce. Maybe these guys could expand or move to a bigger location...

Food good, service bad
Submitted Wednesday, January 18, 2006 - 12:14am [Dine in]

I went here with my wife because we wanted to finally try it. We've always walked by Moxie's on the way to someplace else...

The food was creative, fresh and pretty good. Not outstanding, but a decent effort, and better than Red Robin. If only the staff could stop flirting with each other and serve the customers. There was one server who seemed to be doing her job, but we weren't in her section.

Try the burritos. They are nice. Not real Mexican, but you have to go to LA for that ;)

Not Grand King, but okay
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2006 - 11:59pm [Dine in]

When this place was Grand King, it was awesome. Back then I took friends from HK to impress them. Now it is just okay. Better than most, but far from the glory days. If you are nearby and hungry it is worth a visit. I still go, but it just isn't the same...

I sometimes get talked into going to places like Tony Romas and restaurants of their ilk, and I usually regret it.

A few weeks ago, I went to ESM and I was pleasantly surprised. Okay, it isn't like mamma used to make, but the food is pretty decent, and fresh. I mean you could spend a hundred bucks each and go to a better place in V-town (no names, but it starts with D), but this place is good if you want to fill your belly and eat American Italian.

Just okay
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2006 - 11:20pm [Dine in]

The place has a good rep, and I heard about it from some friends, but man, was I disappointed. I had the boring burger, and my wife had the flaccid chili dog. It was just okay. Go to the Pantry if you want a mediocre burger or hotdog, and save some money. Better yet, drive to Rodeo Burger in Surrey and get a truly outstanding meal.

What a waste
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2006 - 11:15pm [Dine in]

A friend took me to have lunch here over the weekend. I drove past this place a million times, but never went in. I must be psychic :) The staff were indifferent, the food was awful, and I just wanted to flee. The worst thing was the ingredients looked like they would have made a decent meal in skilled hands. Go across the street to Gloucester and have some borscht.

The restaurant is crowded, noisy, and has little in the way of ambience or space for diners to sit comfortably, but I revelled in the sushi and sashimi. It was super-fresh, and very reasonably priced. The tempura isn't bad either. The food is way better than most downtown places. Even the daikon is freshly cut, and is part of the food, not just a throwaway garnish. The staff are quick and friendly, and if you can focus on the food, you will not be disappointed. I usually get the party platter and take it home to share with friends.

I wanted to like it
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2006 - 10:42pm [Dine in]

I went to the Candlestick after seeing the ad in my apartment lobby. I had a club sandwich, and my wife had an omlette. The food was only okay, not restaurant standard, and the service was friendly, but scattered. The coffee and tea are deplorable, and to be honest the food was about as professionally prepared as I could have made at home. Lets hope things improve with experience. I will try again in a few months...

Is that all there is ???
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2006 - 10:37pm [Dine in]

I took my wife to MB because we saw a review on TV. We started at the Broadway location, but the line was huge, so we drove to Commercial. Got seated right away. The staff were super, and the food was instantly ready. Unfortunately, my beef rib was WAY too long on the steam table before it got to me. The brisket was better. Alas, the "fixin's" that came with the meal were a huge disappointment. Like KFC sides from the 70's era. Even the BBQ sauce was nasty, and not in a good way. It was also crazy expensive for the level of food and the fact it was served on paper. Beer was pricey too. I really miss Fatso's in Kits. That place was groovy.
