Think Vij's only thai with Rangoli prices
Submitted Wednesday, June 10, 2009 - 10:53am [Dine in]

Think Vij's only thai with Rangoli prices is how one food critic put it and this is a good description. Not sure what to make of the earlier comment that the colour of the Pad Thai is unlike the standard fare in other Thai eateries--that would be a good thing, no crappy ketchup like colour or flavouring. The pad thai is about as authentic as it gets. The restaurant soft opened the very last few days of May and that was my first visit. It was outstanding but I recently went again and the service is completely seamless now. The food is interchangeable with the best Thai one can get in Thailand. There seems no compromise in terms of only authentic ingredients--no vegetables which are not part of the Thai staple, for example. I am told the meats are organic when possible. The sausage is homemade and absolutely delicious. The fried oysters incredibly light. Fantastic restaurant and the prices are extremely reasonable (again, not sure about how Maenam prices do not fare favorable with the mainstream of Thai eateries in thsi city. Pad Thai for 12 bucks. Satays 2 bucks per. Appies 6 to 8 bucks. To each his own I suppose but to my tastebuds, Maenam is the standard bearer for the very best Thai food in the Vancouver area.

Great restaurant
Submitted Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 11:06pm [Dine in]

The room is modern, oddly shaped and lots of glass frontage but somehow La Regalade was transformed into a great room.

Extremely authentic, well prepared and generous amounts of food. Everything from appies to mains to desserts are as it should be--precisely and classically done and presented. I had the herring appetizer which was fantastic. It is the only restaurant in Vancouver I know where you can order a frisee salad.

Everytime I am here, it feels festive, joyous and everyone enjoying themselves. I have never had a bad meal here from various stews to rabbit to fish. They also make a mean cherry clafouti--the pits are left in as they should be. Also great Floating Islands. Bravo.

Don't order the hangar steak
Submitted Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 10:58pm [Dine in]

The menu to Pied a Terre is not all that French. Basically a short menu of meats namely steaks. I ordered the hangar steak and it was beyond blue with lots of blood oozing out of it. When I mentioned this, was told that's how they do it. The french fries were greazy and tired. In fairness, I was offered another cut of steak but then my dining partner would have had to wait. It was a beautiful evening out yet the blinds were drawn down. I left most of my steak on my plate. I really looked forward to this restaurant but I really don't think I will come back in quite some time.

I would also add that room is beyond intimate to claustrophobic.

Sublime cuisine
Submitted Monday, July 21, 2008 - 5:55pm [Dine in]

I recently dined to Gastropod with a close friend. What can I say? Gastropod fare is at another level compared to most every restaurant in town. In Europe this would be more greatly appreciated than perhaps here. The food is complexly created without sacrificing 'yumminess'. There is only one other restaurant close to Gastropod in my opinion, and that is Chow on Granville Street. The room is elegantly minimal but warmed up by the extensive use of polished wood. I discovered that the restaurant makes its own breads, pastas and desserts, including its own ice creams. Eating at Gastropod is a delightful culinary experience.
