I was pretty disappointed by this place, considering it's more expensive than most ethiopian restaurants around.
I ordered the spicy chickpea flour nuggets dish from the vegetarian part of the menu.
The nuggets themselves and sauce were OK, and would have been fine as a side dish, but they were served in too large a quantity with really incompatible side dishes--tabbouleh (cracked wheat salad), a mountain of basmati rice, and an acidic, crunchy raw onion lentil salad.
I've eaten veggie platters at lots of ethiopian restaurants here and in ontario and I've never had such a lacklustre, starchy combination of dishes.
I'm sad to say that the chickpea nuggets reminded me of a spicier version of the dish you might get on an airline if you ask for "Indian Vegetarian".
Although the ambience is not great and it's often crowded, I still find Our Town to be one of the most comfortable and homey cafés I have been to in East vancouver.
The drinks are generally quite good, with some exceptions like the smoothies with flax, which tasted like berries blended with oily sawdust. HOWEVER, everything else I have had drinkswise has been quite good.
As a vegan, I wouldn't say their choice of food is great, but beggars can't be choosers.
I just moved here from Ottawa not too long ago, which has a good number of Ethiopian restaurants.
Anyways, the one I've felt most at home at in vancouver is Addis Cafe. The staff are quite friendly and the food is pretty good. My only complaint is that the prices are slightly too high, but still within a reasonable range.
I read the reviews on here before going, and I can see the point of some of the negative reviews, but I still think this place is worth going to for comfort food if you live in the area. I found that anything I ate was pretty tasty, especially the desserts. Sure, some of it was greasy, but that's what you get with comfort food.
Although the atmosphere is quite funny, I found the food here to be rather disappointing, given the hype I'd heard. None of the vegan burritos I tried were particularly good, just heavily laden with beans and rice and bread. Nothing particularly spicy, sour, fresh, or remarkable in any other way.
