Quite suprised
Submitted Monday, October 31, 2011 - 11:57am [Dine in]

Came here twice, once for dine -in and once for take out. At the dine in I had the bento box while my friend had a sashimi combo. As i step in I am already impressed by the nice setting and its got TVs as well. It is considerably improved than the old sushi joint that used to be here. The waitress was very polite and helpful. The food was very well priced and the bento box was one of the best downtown. California rolls were surprisingly freshed and the box filled me up very nicely. My friend's meal looked great as well and he said the sashimi were very fresh. If there was one thing negative that they may need to improve on is the timing of the dishes to come out. Both times I've been here, it took quite a bit of time for the food to arrive. Especially the one time when i called ahead to order for take out. Nonetheless they were very polite and apologised and even offered us tea while we waited. This place is definetely worth a try for a good menu with fair pricing if you don't mind the wait. I doubt you will be dissapointed here.

awesome place
Submitted Monday, January 17, 2011 - 9:35pm [Dine in]

the bad - limited parking, small seats

the good - large portions especially the 3 picks meal, very good value and it tastes absolutely delicious, the dish my wife ordered is feeding her 3 meals,

i've heard about bad service but not this night as we were treated promptly and with courtesy.

Keep up the good work and good quality food and i will definitely return.

The downfall is awaiting for this joint. I used to frequent this place often but not anymore. Lately the dishes keep getting smaller and smaller. the only reason i still come here once in a while is because it is so close to where i live. With HST and alcohol enforcement and add on top the downsizing of their dishes, this place is deemed to fail. I've also notice the drop in clientele. the one thing i will say is that the food still taste great but it just is not worth it anymore.

good for late night
Submitted Sunday, November 21, 2010 - 11:02pm [Dine in]

this is a nice joint and is always packed for late night ayce, the atmosphere feels like a pub sometimes but sure is nice to have a tv to look at plus the place is very clean. Food is not the best however compared to other ayce places. the sashimi portions is so tiny that it is laughable, like how do you even dare serve this tiny piece of sashimi. chopped scallop cone was one of the best ive had though but that was the only highlight as everything else was mediocre. sushi = bit of fish with huge riceball.
the servers were among some of the friendliest ive seen in an AYCE setting, very fast and responsive and one even doublechecked with us to make sure we had ordered the right item because she had a feeling we ordered the wrong item. Amazing from an AYCE place.
Nonetheless, the worst thing about here was the timing of food arrival. your first order = sushi came extremely fast while some fried items came way later to the point where we were wondering whether we should order them again for the second round. When we ordered those items again they ended up coming afterall so we had to eat double the same item. also lets not forget that the second order came realy slow prob because they want to give some time for the rice to expand in our stomachs.

going downhill needs change fast
Submitted Thursday, July 29, 2010 - 9:10pm [Dine in]

I believe i've made a review earlier for fish on rice but an update is truly needed. I have always loved this place and i was proud to recommend it to most of my friends. sadly this place has truly gone downhill. I hope the manager/owner read these comments and realise that no positive comments have emerged in the last several months. First the food is still imo decent enough for a AYCE. compared to other places i've been to they are still one of the top places. the dissapointment comes from 1) the salmon sashimi where i dont think it is as fresh as it used to be 2) the reason the food scored a POOR is because what is the point if ur food is great but u dont receive them. i love black cod but it never comes accurately, you order 4 piece u get 1 or 2 pieces , you order 10 pieces you get 2 pieces.. that is what i called FRAUD. Next the service, i wonder if the waitresses get beat in this place because they look sad and look angry. Value for eating angry = poor, ambience, what ambience, I frequent this place quite often due to proximity and their wide selection but i pray that their managers take a look at these latest review and change the way they do thigns because with the addition of the HST I have already noticed a drop in customers and I dont want this place to go out of business.

Late night ayce review
Submitted Monday, July 26, 2010 - 9:36am [Dine in]

what a nice place to eat late night considering it is not that expensive either. the service wasn't that bad either it was about the same as any other ayce places i've been to and was beyond avg this night, the menu selection wasn't that great and i found myself wishing i could pay more for more item selections. unfortunately the most important part- the food- was quite a BIG dissapointment comapred to what i have heard. the simplest thing in terms of the gomae really pissed me off because it was very salty. I have just never tasted that before and it was really weird and disgusting. I thought to myself how do you mess up gomae. the sashimi also wasn't at a high standard and i could barely taste the salmon. With two of my favorite dishes messed up i really cannot give a solid rating for food. But to be fair there were a lot of positives as well = oyster motoyaki, chopped scallop cones, fried chicken wings, and i forgot what it was called but it was a curry flavored skewered in which i was very happy with. The wasabi was very good as well as it was very strong. Overall though if you compare there food with other ayce establishment I was not impressed one bit.

Kirin Seafood Restaurant350 Gifford St., New Westminster
One of the best dim sum restaurants
Submitted Wednesday, May 26, 2010 - 11:46am [Dine in]

I frequent this Kirin along with the one in Richmond quite often. Im a huge dim sum buff so i've tried many places before. Their dim sum has always been incredible. The food comes quickly and is at the highest standard compared to other restaurants. Ambience is good as the place feels very roomy and is comfortable to sit in unlike MANY crowded dim sum restaurants. The price is higher than most places but you pay for what you get. Now the service is on a whole other level in the negative department. The higher ranking waiters with suits are generally very good. The lower end waiter/waitress are the major problem half the time. The amount of mistakes that has occurred simply is unforgivable. When you order dim sum and some does not come and you always wonder whether it will or not is just not right. I'll give 2 examples. The first was a young male waiter who made no eye contact when taking down our order, he also never acknowledge us and just pencilled in our order as we told him. He kept on looking elsewhere as well and we were all wondering if he was day dreaming. Our order was wrong and a dim sum didn't come. Last weekend, the waitress was much more attentive and even told us after we ordered how many items we had ordered to double check, very polite but must have been day dreaming as well as 2 errors ocurred, 1 item missing and 1 item was switched for another similar dim sum. The part that pissed me off was that this particular item that we didnt order had replaced one of my favorite-the crabmeat seaweed wrap. Also, the waitress even re-confirmed upon ordering whether it was crabmeat seaweed wrap we wanted and we said yes. How can you still mess that up. They end up still charging us for the item we didnt order since someone already had one without knowing it wasn't the right item.

MAKE SURE to double check with the waiter/waitress every single item you order and you will have a very enjoyable experience

Very nice setting
Submitted Wednesday, May 26, 2010 - 11:33am [Dine in]

To keep this short, Busy friday night, great atmosphere with piano playing in the background,
great server without match,
food presentation was very good not exceptional however
Food ordered - jumbo shrimp pasta and rockcod fish n chips - shrimps were indeed huge but a little blend. pasta had a tinge of spicyness to it that got me by surprise in a good way, it saved an otherwise boring dish in terms of taste. I tried some of the fish and chips and it was very good but once again not extraordinary.
Overall, I do believe you pay more for the service and ambience rather than the food.

if you take advantage of the 40% off on select items at night then you get a terrific deal however i find the cheap items are limited and everything else is not that cheap. the box sets aren't that great either service is actually not too bad, if you come here just don
t expect to be too impressed.

TIny little place with good sushi
Submitted Sunday, April 5, 2009 - 5:23pm [Dine in]

bento box is great here and i come here often on my lunch. I never eat in because it is just too small. the sushi is great but i suggest you come when it is not so busy. the bento box i a little weird though, it is cheap and has a lot of variety but the rice and chicken/beef terriyaki is TINY. so beware of that. I usually get 3 piece of sushi and the bento in order to be full, comes under $10 total. All in all it is a great place to go with quality sushi at a great price

Their portions are big and they are very quick. The quality of the food depends on what you get. I don't have time to list all the hit and misses so you can find out for yourself. My experience is that most the time the food will be good. I will however ist one miss and that was the bbq duck on rice. the reason why i would eat such a meal at a restaurant instead of buying half a duck and eating at home is because i want freshness and i want the skin to be crisp. I got neither. The duck was horrible and chewy , the skin was not crisp and the whole dish was a big failure. Not only that, but other places gives you a decent amount of duck while this place had the guts to give me mostly the parts with a lot of bones and not much meat. We still tipped well because the service was good and fast but i urge you not to get this dish here.

Lowering the standards
Submitted Sunday, April 5, 2009 - 5:11pm [Dine in]

This place is good and I come here often. The line ups are usually long too so that tells you something. Nonetheless they have clearly skimmed their veggies though and the wrap seems to be getting smaller and smaller with time. I guess with that many customers it doesn't really matter to them. I found 2 other spots that serves a bigger portion and much more sauce on Granville. I will still frequent babylon but if they skim any more or burn anymore of that chicken i might have to permanently switch places. .

Submitted Sunday, February 15, 2009 - 11:50pm [Dine in]

i just recently started coming here and can only comment on the pho.
I was quite impressed with the pho and the meat. usually the places i go to is missing something to make it a good pho. this place has it all to me. the soup, the meat, the noodles were all great and my standards are quite high. service is a little lacking in initiative but otehrwise they are very polite. the decor is HORRIBLE and table setting is horrible as well but otherwise is it a neat little place that i enjoy going.

so i always order take out from here and 9/10 the food is great. there will be that one time where the salmon isn't as fresh. the portions plus $ you pay for it is definetely a steal to me. i never had a problem with service so no complaints. the ambience...i don't really care for this but i will say that the place looks crammed and is overall too tiny. overall i strongly recommend this place.

Submitted Sunday, February 15, 2009 - 11:28pm [Dine in]

i love korean bbq and this place is tops on my list in terms of food. I came here for the first time for dinner AYCE. the food was GREAT. the meat was incredible. there was absolutely no service to the point where we amongst others were ignored. we had to waive our arms many times for tea refill. one thing to watch out for is the amount of food they give you. like any other AYCE you 'll rarely get all the food you order but this place is 100% guarantee you won't get 20% of the food you order. nonetheless the food is so good that i will be returning but i might bring my own bottles of water

dont eat here if you value sanitary
Submitted Sunday, February 15, 2009 - 11:19pm [Dine in]

this place i used to frequent often and coming from places like HK im used to dirty restaurants so I don't mind it. But bringing a caucasian fellow is when i began to realize that you shouldn't come here based on Canadian sanitary standards. there are flies all over the place. The food is actually quite good but don't get any drinks. The service is and has always been some of the worst out there unless the boss is around and is the one serving you. Once in a while you might be entertained with some waitress and cook verbally abusing each other. the food is good and cheap but don't expect service nro cleanliness

sushi is avg wait time is forever
Submitted Sunday, February 15, 2009 - 11:07pm [Dine in]

when i order a bento box i expect max 15 mins wait time....over 30 mins is jsut pathetic seriously.... we had a bento box and some rolls n nigiri salmon, the salmon was outstanding made with fresh looking and great tasting salmon. the rolls were not the best but not bad either. the bento box we had it to go since we sat there for so long and it never came. we even had our sushi long finished by then. would not recommend this place. we saw people waiting a while for orders as well and they did make mistakes left and right. no tea refill either.

I love their burgers. Their food is generally very good. cant copmplain about service, it is friendly and great. Ambience is nice and seating is comfortable. The only problem is last time my buddy ordered their towering onion rings and i think the chef unloaded a whole bag of salt on them. We had to go check up for kidney stones afterwards. But other than that, i love the fact that their drinks n fried are bottomless. Once in a while their food is slow to come out.
