John's Place723 Pandora Ave, Victoria
Best Breakfast
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 7:08pm [Dine in]

When ever we are in Victoria we make it a point to get to John's Place at least twice for breakfast. I would suggest you avoid going on a weekend if at all possible because the place will be packed and you will wait to get crammed into a small space. Weekdays are far less crowded and busy. The omelets can be pricey depending how many items you add in, but they are delicious. All year you will get fresh asparagus spears , never canned or frozen. My daughter always goes for waffles as the cream cheese syrup is to die for. Fruit is always fresh as well. Portion sizes are on the big side, and you can ask for half orders on items.

The service has always been friendly and attentive when we have been there. We are now recognized when we come in and welcomed like long lost friends.

Great food, good service the perfect breakfast location.

A real gem

We were fortunate enough to add this gem to our dining list this visit to Victoria. The service was fabulous. Not overly pushy and not rude, just there enough to guide you through the menu if needed and to make sure your visit was a good one. Very helpful waiter in assisting me in choosing the perfect wine to go with my meal. The food was superb. Everything was delivered hot , presented well and tastes were out of this world. The trout was cooked to flaky perfection and the chicken moist and flavourful. Sauces added not over powered the food. It was obvious by the full house on a Wednesday evening in the off season in Victoria this place attracts a good local business as well. If you have not been make a reservation and go, you will not be disappointed.

Chez Michel Restaurant1871 Oak Bay Avenue, Victoria
Disappointing
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 6:47pm [Dine in]

Went for dinner expecting much more than was delivered. Service was slow and poor. Our waitress only had us to look after, yet we still had to wait over 10 minutes for our drinks to be delivered and even longer for our credit card to be rung through when we were ready to leave. The other wait staff seemed much more attentive to their clients. Food was ok. Not bad, not great just ok. I would expect higher quality of ingredients in Victoria based on what else is available in this city. Using bacon bits one can buy at the grocery store in a spinach salad and canned mushrooms in a mushroom wine sauce just doesn't cut it , especially for the prices being charged. Will definitely not have Chez Michel on our must visit list for when we are in the city. There are far too many other great restaurants to waste time on a mediocre one.
