I've been here for a few years now and I've never grown tired of it. It's easy to miss this little place because it's in the corner of a Plaza.

Food - There's nothing bad about the food here. Their beef sashimi is addictive and totally worth the money. They have a larger portion than any other Japanese restaurant that I've been to (and for pretty much the same price). Their lunch boxes are a great deal for what you get with it. Their motoyakis always leave me drooling. I've tried every single item on their specials board and my favourite has to be either the Dragon Roll or the Platinum Roll. If you want something non-Japanese, you should try their Vietnamese rice dishes or even their Pho. I'm a Chinese-Vietnamese person myself so I know the difference between good Pho and horrible Pho. They have good Pho.

Service - The waitresses here are friendly. My tea is always refilled and they're always checking up on me and my boyfriend/friend (whomever I'm with that day). Whenever they're not busy they strike up (short) conversations with us. So I totally appreciate that. It gives me a relaxed happy feeling. It makes coming back worthwhile.

Value - Like I said, the lunch boxes are worth it. Even side orders (sushi combos and whatnot) are more than reasonable. Many other places would charge the same price for less food.

Ambiance - They're not flashy nor fancy but their decor still works. The washrooms are clean and the place looks clean and neat.

There are reasons why I keep coming back. :)

Addictive Hot Pot
Submitted Sunday, March 1, 2009 - 4:03am [Dine in]

I go there for their Hot Pot. End of story. Their other food is ok but to make the most out of your experience, go for their hot pot. Some of their food is slightly overpriced, I mean, $10 for a small bowl of cold chewy noodles with some veggies? Service wasn't incredible but pretty decent. Tea and water came in these rectangular jugs, which was different for me. I can't get enough of their little appys though. If you're ever in downtown, this is a place that you should try out.

I found out about this restaurant from the Georgia Straight. I always like trying new restaurants so I thought I'd give this one a go. My bf and I went here one weekend and luckily we made reservations. The place was packed. We felt a little out of place because we're 24 and everyone else seemed to be at least in the mid 30s.

Food was different from what we expected. It wasn't excellent but it wasn't poor. Service was outstanding. Our waitress always made sure that our drinks were full and she recommended excellent red wine. She was very knowledgeable of the food and drinks so we felt completely confident in our orders. Unfortunately the food didn't taste as great as we thought. Presentation was beautiful though. The only thing to ruin our evening were the protesters outside the restaurant. They were protesting against the restaurant's fois gras (which we didn't eat).

There are no words to express how good that dish is. My boyfriend and I always come here on our anniversary and on our birthdays. I always make sure to reserve ahead of time. Service is excellent. They always come around to make sure that we're doing ok. The waiters are very patient and they always make great recommendations. The ambiance is wonderful. Their desserts taste ok but the presentation is nice.

I found this place by accident. It's so small and hidden that it's easy to miss. When I first stepped in I was promptly greeted and seated. It's so small that their booths are more like 2 people booths. Food was pretty ok for their asking price. Service was pretty ok also. Their washrooms were pretty nice though. I was surprised. Overall I'd come back again.

Hello? Service anyone?

Food was subpar. I've had much better at other places. Prices were alright and the decor was plain.

Service was atrocious. I'm sorry, but I don't think it's good customer service when all the waiters/waitresses are standing around talking to each other. It wasn't even busy and I had to ask TWICE for a tea refill. The first waitress I asked disappeared and went off to some other table. Oh and she NEVER came back. The second time I asked I had to wait 15 mins before he came back. I was confused because I was one of the only 3 tables in the restaurant. I haven't gone back since then.

Not bad.

Decor was ok and the value for the meals were pretty reasonable. Service was actually pretty good, with frequent tea stops. The sake there was always nice and hot. Just how I like it. I love their daily specials.

Only complaint I have is that when you order take out, they lack any customer service. How about a smile girls? Is it too much to ask for? Oh, and their beef sashimi is overpriced and sweet. It shouldn't be sweet, it should be slightly sour-tangy with a hint of spiciness. I don't want to pay $9 for less than 10 pieces. I've been to other places that charge less for more.

What Happened?

First off, they shouldn't be adding gratuity onto my bill when service wasn't even subpar. If people aren't tipping, there MUST be a reason. EVERYONE can't be stingy/cheap. Food was somewhere between decent and horrible. AYCE isn't even worth it for my friends and I because we only end up eating 2 different things, over and over.

All I can say is that it's just a tiny step up from food court food.

Close to popping a blood vessel
Submitted Sunday, March 1, 2009 - 2:41am [Dine in]

If there was anyway to get a rating lower than 1 (poor) they would've gotten it. I don't even know where to start. How about the last time I went with a group of 6.

Food - I think I came pretty close to throwing up in my mouth. Not only did it LOOK horrid, it TASTED horrible. How do you mess up even the most simplest of rolls, the California roll? I went there for dinner AYCE and for lunch (where they don't serve AYCE) and both times, the food tasted like something dug out of a garbage can.

Service - This is where I nearly popped a blood vessel. The waiters/waitresses were one step away from pretty much throwing food at me. I guess it's too much work for them to actually PLACE the food onto my table and not toss it onto the table. Now I usually tip 10% for horrible service (and 20% - 30% for great service) and so I gave them 10% for AYCE service. The best part was when the MANAGER actually stopped us from leaving the restaurant. Why? Because we didn't tip them 15%. I was completely floored. That Manager, in turn, called the other Manager/Owner and let's just say that a huge argument broke out. They were making a big deal out of it and refusing to let me step one foot out of the restaurant until I gave them 15%.

Conclusion: You're better off at McDonalds or Burger King.

One of my favourites

This is probably one of the only hot pot restaurants that I would go to. I've been to many hot pot restaurants and this is by far one of the best. I usually end up sitting at the counter, just because there had to be at least 4 people in your party in order to have a table. I never get sick of their lamb and their sauce is to die for!

Service is excellent. Their always coming by to make sure my pot doesn't overboil and if I need anything, like extra ginger or onions, they're happy to give it to me. I've been going here for over 2 yrs and I've never been disappointed once. Highly recommended!

I've been coming here since they've first opened. I have to say that I'm loving the new rolls they keep inventing. My favourite still is the Salmon Tempura roll and the Genki Roll. Who knew that yam and cream cheese go so well together? The decor is alright, and the food value is pretty good. The service is going downhill though. The manager of the place use to be a waitress and the service she provided was excellent but now with these new girls, it's hard to try to get a tea refill on a slow day! After taking my order, I'll never see them again, even if I'm the only one in there. And you know what, it wouldn't hurt to smile once in a while.

Keep coming back for more
Submitted Sunday, March 1, 2009 - 1:55am [Dine in]

I live around the area, so I'm glad that they opened up. It's a small quaint little place. Decor is pretty ok. I've been here at least 5 times already (in the past month) and each time I leave happy. The male waiter there is quite nice and friendly.

The last time I went there (a few days ago) was for take out. The waiter struck up a conversation with me and made sure I had tea while waiting (much appreciated). Food was done promptly. The only thing I would like to see changed is their take out container. I think they need containers that close (instead of having to tape them shut). All in all, I really like the place and will keep coming back for more.

Just needs a little work
Submitted Sunday, March 1, 2009 - 1:46am [Dine in]

I've been here twice and it's always been busy. The decor needs a little bit of work but the service is pretty good. The waitress was kind enough to seat us at the bar, even though we were ordering take out, and the waiter behind the bar was keeping us entertained with his jokes. Food took quite awhile, but that was to be expected since they were pretty busy. The only complaint I have about the food is that they use way too much salt. Twice I've ordered from them and twice their food comes out too salty. I love salty foods but that was way too much, even for me. Their prices were reasonable.
