great Bistro food
Submitted Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 8:28pm [Dine in]

Wanted to try this restaurant for the last 3 months and it did not disappoint as the food is not complicated but nicely presented and above all tasted great . The service was friendly and we never felt they were in our face . the tables are very close together but after the initial 2-3 minutes you start to relax and feel you have your own space . To bad it was too cool out that night as the new backyard patio looks very cozy and private . will go back soon.

Great feeling room
Submitted Saturday, April 21, 2007 - 10:46am [Dine in]

Tried the new Anducci's Restaurant in North Burnaby and although you cannot see in from the street due to dark windows once through the doors what a terrific surprise as the room has a very relaxed lounge upscale sports bar feel . The menu is very extensive and our favourite dish was a shared plate of flaming shrimp that just before arriving at the table was lite and as the dish said it flamed. More than just theatreatics the dish was delicious especially the use of salsa as a dipping base for our bread . the service staff was very young but very enthusiastic and still need a bit of seasoning but the few mistakes were certainly made up in smiles and sincere apologies . the place was packed and also has great screens to watch a variety of sporting events .

Best Thai Burnaby
Submitted Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 11:22am [Dine in]

After reading positive reviews on Dinehere we finally tried this relatively new addition to the Burnaby restaurant scene . What a pleasant surprise as they took a rather run down old restaurant site and transformed it into a very warm comfortable dining experience .The menu is very extensive and allows you to select ingredients then add to various types of basic Thai dishes . Excellent quantity , quality , and reasonable pricing as we witnessed a number of diners leaving with their doggy bags . Over the years we have always enjoyed Lhy Thai on Edmonds as our favourite Thai restaurant but Green Basil is our new Thai restaurant of choice .

Submitted Sunday, April 8, 2007 - 12:38pm [Dine in]

Stopped in for Saturday lunch with high expectations and did not leave disappointed . Service was terrific and the food presentations were impressive with excellent varied tastes as we shared 4 lunch dishes . The Chai tea was delicious and very authentic . Certainly not inexpensive but the service and food quality makes this a new favourite.

Great Mussels -terrific value
Submitted Saturday, April 7, 2007 - 11:49am [Dine in]

We have been going to this restaurant since it opened for both the mussels and the value of a shared meal . the mussels are done in a spicy wine sauce and if you like a little spice you can not resist picking up the spoon enjoying the broth with pita .The mussels , a large lamb souvlaki meal with a 1/2 liter of wine for less than $40.00 is a true bargain ,. Combine this with a friendly attentive service and a casual atmosphere and it always enjoyable .

Amazing Music Great Atmosphere
Submitted Friday, April 6, 2007 - 11:23am [Dine in]

Read one of the other reviews that said to try a Wednesday night when the band Terminal Station performs and they did not disappoint as the variety and talent of the band made for a great evening . The service was prompt and friendly and the grilled Calamari appetizer is spicy and beautifully presented wrapped in an English cucumber . All in all a great evening and worth the value considering the quality of the entertainment and at one point the music made a number of tables stand up and start dancing in the aisles .

Portobello Ristorante1429 W. Broadway, Vancouver
Good Value Expected Italian
Submitted Sunday, April 1, 2007 - 12:28pm [Dine in]

We were in the area and wanted to try the new location of Portobello and see if it was a good as we remembered a number of years ago when it was on west 4th avenue . Arrived at 5.30 P.M. without reservations and rather than make us feel like how could you even think of eating here without reservations on a Saturday night they smiled and took us to a very cozy table . The waiter was most charming and the food was nicely presented and tasted great . This is not the most creative menu but the items are what you expect from a traditional Italian trattoria type menu . the mussels wer an excellent started and the freshly baked pizza type buns were incredible . My wife ordered the tiger shrimp in a very tasty sauce and I asked if the veal Scallopina could be cooked with a Lemon sauce instaed of Marasal and the waiter instaed of having to ask the chef quickly responded that it would be no problem . one of the highlights of the meal were they vegetable acompliments that were both varied and properly cooked . All this combined with a great bottle of Volpocella made happy diners and we will be back .

No we do not want coffee
Submitted Saturday, March 31, 2007 - 2:33pm [Dine in]

Last night we dropped into the Cactus club and despite parking problems in the area had another solid Cactus Club experience . The decor at this location is terrific and the food was very good although the soft fish taco's had maybe 3- 4 very small pieces of fish and really was just a lettuce and tomato taco in reality . The only strange part of the meal was the arrival of a waiter at our table with a cup of coffee and after telling him we did not want coffee he insisted the coffee was indeed for us and he was about to leave it until another waiter informed him he had the wrong table .Despite the confused Mr. coffee the staff is very friendly and we had a great evening .

Nice remodel
Submitted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 - 9:00pm [Dine in]

As a Burnaby residents we have been going to this Earls location for over 15 years at least once a month and was shocked at the new look which was long overdue . The new ambiance was most welcomed as it very comfortable and relaxing and the always present high noise level due to low ceilings seemed diminished by the changed and improved surroundings .We have never been disappointed with the food given the value and market segment that Earls competes in and the relatively new tempura prawn appetizer is a winner especially with the kick ass sauce .The waitress was charming however the front hostess staff always makes this seem much more difficult than it should be as we see the empty tables and we ask ourselves why do they not just take us to the empty table instead of looking at the clipboard and making this look like some strategic military move . Love Earls but the hostesses need to be more real

Chill Winston3 Alexander St., Vancouver
Great Surprise
Submitted Monday, March 26, 2007 - 7:52pm [Dine in]

Spent a wonderful afternoon in the sunshine on Sunday downtown and was looking to go to one of the new restaurants in gastown but it was closed and ended up trying Chill Winston which totally exceeded our expectations . The room and chairs make for a very relaxed feel as you look out on the Gassy jack square that gives you almost a New york feel . Our bald waiter was laid back but very friendly and made you feel very special and welcome and unlike many places these day you were not treated like an inconvenience as he sincerely was concerned you knew they had some very unique specials of the day and being a first timer helped with menu suggestions . The yellow beet carpaccio with ceviche scallops was a very wow plate presentation that was only surpassed by the taste . We shared plates and the Calamari with tomatoes and capers was equally superb especially for those who prefer their calamari unbreaded . We finished with crab Cakes with a terrific dipping sauce and then the french fries ( will not spoil the plate presentation as it is totally represented what this restaurant is all about > great food , great beverages in a casual relaxed setting with waiters who care . we will be back and often .
