Great new Casual steakhouse
Submitted Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 5:58pm [Dine in]

Went to this new restaurant with low expectations but was extremely impressed with food , service and decor .

Great feeling room with exceptional lighting and a very upscale casual sports bar feel .

The menu was also a surprise as was expecting a totally meat based menu but instead found lots of starters and salads plus a varied list of main courses . when in Rome etc. had the rib Eye bone in steak which was cooked to perfection , very juicy and nicely presented .

Good wine list fairly priced by today's new standards

High-lite was the service as it was smooth and knowledegable which seems to be lacking in a lot of new restaurants that have opened in the last year . Manager / owner came to the table and was very appreciative of our business and really wanted to know how they could improve . Wish this operation much success as they seem very customer focused .

Could Be Good
Submitted Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 12:16pm [Dine in]

I know this operation is going through a transition stage as it goes from the fine dining concept to more of a casual pub like dining experience .
The room is terrific and really carries on the great architecture of the former CPR train station .
The menu is very confusing and if they need to decide what they are going to be . If they stick with the transcontinental theme I believe they will have problems as dinners are looking for a more casual atmosphere as per the dress code witnessed when we ate here .
The food was mediocre and the service was less than enthusiastic or caring . When you approach a table where the salad was not eaten normally you would ask if everything was okay instead of asking are you finished and take the 2 plates away .

Hopefully they get their act together soon as this a great space for a restaurant .

Great breakfast place > you seat yourself > food is quick, tasty and huge portions > good hot coffee keeps coming > service is friendly > great value as 2 huge breakfasts with coffee under $20.00. Nice to see old time diners still serving great food in a casual setting

Great New Addition to Yaletown
Submitted Friday, November 16, 2007 - 3:53pm [Dine in]

Considering this restaurant has only been open for a week the dining experience was outstanding . The menu consists of mostly shared plates and all dishes we shared were incredible both in terms of presentation and taste . started with the beet salad with goat cheese which was just as good as the best I ahve ever had at Aurora Bistro which was followed by a deconstructed version of scallop and bacon that was amazing . we finished with the lamb dish that melted in our mouths . Oh I forgot the breadsticks that you must try as each one is about a foot long and dusted somehow with popcorn . the room is comfy and our server Sandra was delightful . This is a winner

Hello anyone home
Submitted Saturday, November 3, 2007 - 6:30pm [Dine in]

This week we were walking on Granville and decided to give Whineo's a try . walked in and there was one table occupied but no staff any where to be found . actually had to go to the rear of the restaurant and peek around a corner to get the attention of a waiter . Lucky for us the food was better than the service The take on bruschetta is interesting in both the presentation and taste which was excellent . The shrimp and duck were also winners along with there version of Spanish Potatoes . all in all good food once you find the waiter.

Hanger Steak a Winner
Submitted Saturday, November 3, 2007 - 6:17pm [Dine in]

Finally had the opprtunity to dine at Hamilton Street bar & grill and try their famous Hanger Steak that comes with a fantastic red wine sauce and steak frites . It was terrific .we also tried the Mussel appetizer special and the salmon special all nicely presented and very flavourful. Service was prompt , friendly and efficient . The decor is starting to look a little old but the room is very warm and comfortable. Will be back soon.

Don't Be a Stranger
Submitted Monday, October 29, 2007 - 8:55pm [Dine in]

1st visit to Boneta after reading rave reviews and was not disappointed . Greeting really made you feel welcome and the feel of this space is neat . The menu is limited and changes but had no problem sharing 3 dishes . started withe Scallop ceviche that was accompanied by a citrus vinaigrette > excellent dish . We the shared the Albacore Tuna with roasted Red peppers as well as the AAA Flatiron steak . Both dishes were beautifully presented and very tasty . Service was attentive and very professional . On the way out the floor manager not only thanked us but said " don't be strangers now " and we won't as we will be back soon and often

Please leave the plate
Submitted Monday, October 29, 2007 - 8:47pm [Dine in]

Dropped in on a Saturday night to share some plates . Place is long and narrow however you do feel comfortable once seated . Food was great especially the sauces that accompanied the dish . Had the Calamari la Playa as well as the Rock Prawns and Blue Crab Cakes plus the beef robata which were all terrific . Only problem with the evening was an overly aggressive hostess who continued to walk by and grab plates that we had not finished . the sauces were so good we wanted to soak them up with the bread but when we turned around she kept trying to take the plates away. It took 3 attempts and please leave our plates until we say okay that she finally got the message .

A Quiet version of Guu
Submitted Monday, October 29, 2007 - 8:38pm [Dine in]

Dropped in on a very quiet Monday evening and was very impressed by the overall atmosphere especially the use of bamboo to separate diners . The food was excellent especially the Kobe beef steak that was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth .The Yuza jalapeno pasta was also very tasty along with the Kara-age Chicken with 3 salts . Our waiter forgot one dish that was an appetizer and certainly apologized for the error .great food in a nice atmosphere with reasonable value for the money spent.

Could be Good - They are trying
Submitted Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 6:08pm [Dine in]

Went to Players before the Phoenix Suns / Sonics game on Friday and had the pre- game menu . Food was served unbelievably quickly and was decent but not spectacular .The chili prawn starter was a winner and the other 3 dishes were fine but nothing special . Our server although somewhat inexperienced was warm and friendly and made us feel welcome . The room however is large and at 1st glance rather impressive but once you sit down it has no character and does not have a warm feel . Hopefully they can get another interior designer to warm the atmosphere up as I sincerely hope this location makes it and does not suffer the same fate of Wilson's .

Perfect Evening
Submitted Sunday, October 28, 2007 - 5:58pm [Dine in]

Took guests from Japan to the Shore Club last week and not only were they impressed but everything went right . All 6 of us had seafood appetizers and the tuna and oysters were terrific . We than all had steaks or lamb and everyone had their protein cooked perfectly which very seldom happens. The service was attentive and friendly without making you feel that someone is looking over your shoulder. The room is beautiful and the piano music made for a memorable evening . We finished with cappuccino's and lattes that were also served without fault . Although somewhat expensive I felt it was worth every penny when everything goes smoothly and all enjoy the food , service and ambiance .

Great energy - fun time
Submitted Saturday, October 6, 2007 - 10:43am [Dine in]

When we normally walk by this location and it is always full with a lineup. last night we were lucky and there were 2 seats at the counter and we had a great time watching 4 chefs turn out dish after dish . the service was quick and efficient and lots of noise as orders and greetings are all in Japanese and really adds to the uptempo nature of the room . As to the food we started with the Spot Prawn Sashimi which was nicely presented and very fresh and delicious . Next up Mussels in garlic which had a wonderful broth and the mussels were generous and large ( also very fresh) The 3rd shared dish were grilled beef short rib that had been marinated in a delightful teriyaki sauce . We finished with Japanese fried Udon noodles . With 2 large Asahi beers the bill cam to $48.00 which is terrific value for both the quality of the food but also for the fun entertainment the young enthusiastic staff brings to the operation .We will be back

Lots of Energy
Submitted Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 11:32am [Dine in]

Tried Guu in Gastown last night and really enjoyed the experience especially the high friendly high energy of the servers who make it fun and enjoyable . The food was nicely presented but it was the taste of all 4 dishes that made the evening special . had the Popeye salad then the BBQ short rib which were amazingly tender , then the seafood paella followed by the Mackerel . All in all excellent food , good service and a great fun environment

Wonderful Flavours
Submitted Saturday, August 25, 2007 - 5:24pm [Dine in]

This was out first experience at Cobre and really did not know what to expect . The restaurant is double tiered and we were seated on the top level and felt very comfortable . As someone who is Spanish challenged the menu conveniently came with another sheet that defined the Spanish words used on the menu . We share 4 plates which were all delicious along with a bottle of Chilean Viognier wine .We started with a ceviche dish which was a large sliced diver scallop with a jicama salad . The plate presentation was unique and eye catching and the taste was superb . Our second dish was a taqueria ( small soft taco wrap) of pork saddle which melted in our mouths .Dish #3 was a Tamale with Cuban lobster and a white hominy corn . Once again the presentation and flavours were excellent .Our last dish was a pan seared BC sable-fish with a side pairing of prosciutto wrapped around casaba ( sort of like honeydew or cantaloupe ) This dish was also a winner . in summary great new addition to gastown with a nice comfortable room with friendly service and fantastic food . We will be back

Vassilis Souvlaki Greek Taverna6558 Kingsway, Burnaby
Miserable owner
Submitted Wednesday, July 25, 2007 - 8:50pm [Dine in]

When this restaurant opened the food , service and decor were outstanding . Over the years it has steadily declined to the point we go out of our way to go to other not so famous restaurants such as Christo's and Minoas that have far better food and friendlier service especially the hosts or hostesses . The owner of Vasillis greets you without smiling or even making you feel welcome then takes you to the table throws the menu down and leaves making you wonder why you want to spend you hard earned money in this establishment . hopefully after diners like us do not come back he will understand that his business is the hospitality business and he should at least attempt to be hospitable even if he does not want to.

Great Calamari
Submitted Sunday, June 17, 2007 - 10:43am [Dine in]

certainly my favourite Greek taverna in Burnaby as the food is very solid and consistent .If you love calamari and are not a big fan of batter then try their calamari Skaras which are very delicate tubes of squid cooked over the grill & then served hot in a small skillet with olive oil and lemon . They also have without a doubt the best Saganaki served anywhere . Service is efficient and friendly .

Great Food - Weird Knives
Submitted Saturday, June 16, 2007 - 10:57am [Dine in]

Discovered a very comfortable restaurant with excellent food to share in a nice casual setting. Shared a spinach salad with mini Saganaki plus Korean BBQ ribs & a very delicious calamari and the best of the night some very tasty oysters . All 4 dishes were beautiful in their presentation but also the flavors were terrific on the palate .Now for the knives which were obviously purchased for their appearance not their practicality as not only were they difficult to hold but really did not cut the food without a great deal of effort > the other weird thing was when you placed the knife on the side of the dish it rolled over and stood upright with the blade facing you .The service was friendly and professional and the surroundings very comfortable and if you are lucky to get a window seat the people watching on Water street will deflect the starring at the weird knives . The wine list is rather expensive with only a couple of offerings under $35.00 . All in all a great addition to the downtown eating scene and wish them well especially if those weird knives were gone when we return again soon .

Waiters have fun
Submitted Saturday, May 26, 2007 - 1:34pm [Dine in]

Experienced a great dinner at Rodney's and particularly noticed how much fun and upbeat the wait staff were at this operation . The deep fried oysters are nicely presented and very filling and tasted great . we also shared the garlic prawns which were perfectly cooked and the sauce to die for especially to dip bread into . The room is a little loud and the white wine list is a very limited in the $30.00 range . Overall great food and a fun environment and will be back .

Smiles are Free
Submitted Tuesday, May 15, 2007 - 8:36pm [Dine in]

Dined at this restaurant for the 1st time since they moved down the block . the restaurant really lacks ambiance as it is very sterile especially for a Greek taverna that usually has lots of plants and atmosphere . the hostess and the servers were the most serious non smiling serving crew we have ever encountered and they looked like they hated the jobs and the people they were serving . the food was descent but really lacked true greek flavours which is a shame as we remember this place much more fondly . Hopefully the owner can buy his staff some happy pills and the hostess and servers start to appreciate the customers who really pay the bills .
