Second Review
Submitted Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 12:24am [Dine in]

Everything of this restaurant has definitely gone down. The last time I rated this, food was definitely good. I don't go to this restaurant anymore, because I gave it two chances in the last few months, but their standards have just not picked up. I had to do this second review to even out my previous rating few years ago.

Poor service, and where is the meat?

Ambiance is great at this place, and there is plenty of seats even on a Saturday at dinner time (no wonder). Parking is REALLY bad, cos street pay parking is very far too. Obviously, they're trying to pretend they're Pearl Castle (sorry, no where near it).

My partner and I both felt like having hotpots. I ordered spicy tofu, and he ordered tomato and beef. Mine was okay, with lots of veggies, but where is the tofu?!?! I was hoping for a pot kind of like the Korean ones with lots of tofu, but only got a few pieces. I'm okay, cos I can live with just veggies. My partner's hotpot had 3, yes, THREE slices of beef only, and it was flank beef. Do they know that flank is for stir fry?! Maybe 5 thin slices of tomatoes? Most of it was just chinese cabbage.

We ordered 3 skewers of beef half way through our meal because the hotpots were VEGGIE pots. After waiting for 15min, we asked where the skewers were, and the waitress said it's coming. After another 5 min, she came back and said the kitchen didn't make it yet. So we cancelled, and went to have our SECOND dinner at a bubble tea place in the area.

I looked around at other people's food. The deep fried stuff though, looked like they were cooked in stale oil. Bubble teas LOOKED okay, and glad I didn't order any... But they're like $5 each.... Oh yah, I forgot we waited almost half an hour for our hotpots to begin with. WE will NOT go back to this restaurant again.

Lava Cake
Submitted Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 1:04pm [Dine in]

I am not a big fan of cream puffs, regardless of its make. However, I happened to be in the mall early in the morning for a doctor's appointment one day, and saw that the lava cake was available. For those of you that do not know, usually, all items other than the regular cream puff has a "SOLD OUT" sign on it. So I thought I wouldn't waste the chance to try the lava cake out. It was superb! The portion was just right, and it wasn't too sweet. When I finished the cake, it was just enough to satisfy my chocolate crave.

I only lined up for 5 minutes. I would not have lined up if it was more than a 15 minute wait.

Best Chinese Restaurant?!?!
Submitted Monday, March 5, 2007 - 6:08pm [Dine in]

I would think more than 80% of the readers who voted this restaurant to be Richmond's best Chinese Restaurant are NOT Chinese. The main reason is because the one and only time I've been there, the food seemed so "fusion" (the the type of fusion that "Red Door" serves) to me. It's totally westernized Chinese food.

Wontons are supposed to have shrimps in them, but the wontons I had there contained only pork, which is really weird. I tried to order a dish or steamed vegetables, which is available at all wonton houses, the waiter did not know what I wanted to order.

I personally think, if you want more decent westernized Chinese food or wontons, Number 9 at Lansdowne Mall might be a better choice.

Any other branch but Richmond
Submitted Monday, March 5, 2007 - 5:53pm [Dine in]

I was at this restaurant two months ago with 7 other coworkers. To start off with, the Lobster appetizer (trio) was very tasty. The food was pretty decent, as expected at any branch of Boathouse. After the dinner, 3 out of 7 people (including me), got sick from the food. We came to a conclusion that it was the mashed potatoes, as the other 4 people did not have this.

So we called up the manager and told him about it the next day. Funny enough, he apologized and said that they always make sure their food is at the right temperature. However, he claimed that he was going to send us certificates to go back (not that I'm going to use it, unless I could use it at another branch), which we never received, he also said "Nobody else reported this on the same night". So.. does this mean we were making this up?

Other than this, this location smells really bad... kind of like damp wood, or moss... It is a seafood restaurant, but it doesn't need to smell like one.

So after this one and only try at this branch, I've had the Dine out dinner at Whiterock, and Valentine's dinner at New Westminster. Both were excellent! The ambiance at the New Westminster branch is awesome!

Don't order steak
Submitted Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - 12:05am [Dine in]

Thinking that it was probably a pretty good restaurant, as I saw many customers. I am not sure whether it was the wrong choice of food, or whether the food quality was just overall below expectation. I ordered a steak, which was so hard that I had trouble eating every part of.

After the meal, I looked around... and found that the majority of customers are in the higher age groups. So I'm thinking, the seafood might be better here, since higher age groups tend to order seafood.

Service was as good as expected in a hotel restaurant. I have never went back to eat here again. I'm going back to Milestones/Cactus/Boathouse/Keg for steaks.

I agree that the ambiance and service does not make up for the food. I find the food at this restaurant just okay. The food was more like a housewife trying to cook a decent fancy dinner (smaller portions though) for his husband. Of course when I eat out, I would expect more than just food that I could have made from home.

Even though I used the Entertainment coupon, I did not find it worth it to try this restaurant again.

Staff is friendly and detail oriented, and the ambience is trendy.
