A rough diamond
Submitted Saturday, April 28, 2012 - 5:58pm [Take-out]

Maybe 'outstanding' for the Food category is overstating it a bit, but this place deserves much better than a Solid rating. I have tried this place a few times now and the quality is consistently high. Although the premises are sparse and basic, it is very clean and the kitchen is partially open to viewing. The patrons are very friendly and polite. Thoroughly recommended.

You can't go wrong
Submitted Thursday, October 4, 2007 - 9:35pm [Dine in]

It's a simple format that often fails. A wide open eatery that is really clean and with decent size tables and plenty of elbow room.
Add a huge choice of meals and offer coffee and pop inclusive in the price. This is extremely good value. I'll be popping in to try the $8.00 breakfast! It's self-service although I gave it three stars because I think it's taken into account for the average scores.

Tantra tantrum!!
Submitted Friday, June 1, 2007 - 2:00am [Dine in]

I keep going back, but much less often. Sitting out on the patio on a warm evening looking across Burrard Inlet is (or should be) a really pleasant experience.
There's a very fundamental problem with the Tantra, and that is who is serving at the particular time you go there. The food is variable, especially in the late evening - it might be freshly cooked or not - do you feel lucky?
And the service! Sometimes good, but often absolutely awful, particularly in the latter part of the evening. There's a real feeling that you're just a plain nuisance and the place is being run for the benefit of the people that work there and not not the customer. I paid a fairly hefty bill on my debit card and left a good tip, and the waitress handed me my card and receipt almost behind her back without even looking at me, never mind any "thank-you for your custom" - she was too busy leaning on the bar and having a chat with one of her co-workers. Rude or what?
On another occasion, it was a lovely warm evening and my wife and I arrived about 9.20 pm. It was busy outside - overflowing but there was a couple of spare tables. We went to sit down but the waitress informed us that they were closing this particular part of the patio and that we would have to take a seat inside. There were two chances that we would be shoved inside for their convenience - Fat and Slim - and Slim just left town. We went elsewhere - eighty bucks to another restaurant turned down by the Tantra.
I hate to say it, but I'll still go back........

Not so hot
Submitted Friday, June 1, 2007 - 1:38am [Dine in]

This place was recommended by a friend. Red Chilli is small and has often got people lining up at the door which is a good sign - it always seems busy. We went early one evening to ensure a table.
The menu is extensive, so extensive that it was clearly an impossibility to make such a range of dishes fresh. We selected a couple of main dishes and rice.
The meal came quickly - far too quickly for it to have been freshly made in my view. The portions were very good and the taste was really good as well, so my initial concerns about the extensive menu and speed of service were put aside. Towards the end of the meal I put some broccoli in my mouth and (totally involuntary) spat it out. It had a horrible slimy consistency that can only have been caused by it being soaking in some kind of sauce for too long. I picked up other pieces of broccoli and they were slimy to touch. It could have been a really good meal but this really left a bad taste in my mouth (?).
The service was very good, attentive but not intrusive. There were a couple of other niggles such as the waiter asking "how is your meal SIR" which resulted in a withering look from my wife. To cap it all the main menu had a charge of $2.50 for fruit juice, and on a scribbled piece of paper that had their daily specials it was charged out at $2.75. I pointed out the discrepancy and was told that they hadn't got around to changing the price on the main menu and charged me the higher price (even though it wasn't on the menu I was ordering from). That's not the right way to treat a customer. I'm not going back.

Good but inconsistent
Submitted Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 2:45pm [Dine in]

I had a few meals at MM with friends just after it first opened. It was excellent, with great food and plenty of space on the table - which is essential for sharing a selection of curries with friends. More recently the curries have a bit too much sauce for my taste - but this seems to be quite a common approach with the Indian restaurants I have been to in Vancouver. I would like to see a few more raw fresh spices in the meals such as fresh chillis and ginger. That said, the flavours of the curries are really good and the atmosphere is relaxed and spacious.

Great curry but some drawbacks
Submitted Tuesday, May 1, 2007 - 2:31pm [Dine in]

I have eaten at Indian Fusion several times and in general their curries are extremely good. I have had less joy with take-outs though, with chewy naans and curries that seem to have too much sauce. For a sit-down meal it is slightly cramped and the tables are not really large enough for two people. That said, the flavours and fresh spices in the meals really shine through and if they keep up these standards then they can rely on frequent visits from me. Top stuff.

Lousey lasagne
Submitted Monday, March 26, 2007 - 2:11am [Dine in]

Just an update from my previous comments on Andreas. The take-away lasagne was pretty awful. The only reason that I have given higher marks is that I have been there on several occassions and it was almost acceptable, but I will not be going back.

Quality ingredients for a real Italian pizza
Submitted Monday, March 26, 2007 - 1:47am [Dine in]

There's nothing fancy about this place. They make the best pizzas that I've had outside Italy. Superb thin pizza base with fresh ingredients - it seems dead simple but too many other places seem to think that you need a three course meal slapped on a pizza ie. quantity instead of quality. This is really VERY good.

You won't go hungry
Submitted Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 4:47pm [Dine in]

If your a meat fan then this is the place for you. Four of us shared a platter and another dish. We were hungry but there was no way we could finish the meal. I think this place is more suited to the younger set. There is no service to speak of and you have to collect yourself - kind of canteen style (or maybe they were just understaffed on the day).

This isn't my kind of place, but I can see why others like it.

Just like the real thing??
Submitted Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 3:01pm [Dine in]

Well it's run down and pretty worn out.........

Our meal was ok - large portions of spaghetti with meat balls, but the whole experience was pretty uninspiring. The restaurant tries to give a feeling of intimacy with the subdued lighting, although closer inspection shows that it is simply covering up for the place being a bit run-down. The restaurant is just across the way from Bravo Cucina which has a very good reputation.

There's no web site for this restaurant.

If this place had a makeover and a revamped menu then they could do well, although there is a feeling that they have almost given up.

Nice atmosphere
Submitted Saturday, February 24, 2007 - 6:07pm [Dine in]

I'm no great enthusiast of Mexican food, although it makes a nice change. What I like about this place is the atmosphere - it has a really nice feel to it with bits of Mexicana and earthy colours.

The service is slow and they seem understaffed, so make sure that time is on your side when you visit. The staff are very pleasant and friendly.

I enjoy this place enough to have gone back a few times, although as I said, I am no expert on this type of food.

Big bangers 'n' Mash
Submitted Saturday, February 24, 2007 - 6:00pm [Dine in]

There's nothing too exciting about this themed pub. You get large amounts of food and it's quite tasty. A friend who has been around these parts for many a year enthuses on how good their fish and chips are. They sell guiness and other UK ales. Everything about this place is average - maybe they don't need to try too hard since they probably rely a lot on passing shoppers at Lonsdale Quay and also the tourist trade. If you're missing your bangers and mash or toad-in-the-hole then it's worth a visit.

Excellent value lunch and breakfast
Submitted Wednesday, February 14, 2007 - 2:27pm [Dine in]

I've only ever been to the Eighties for breakfasts and lunch, so I can't comment on evening meals.

I had the avocado shrimp salad for lunch and my partner had a fish burger. The avocado shrimp salad was excellent - with plenty of fresh fruit as part of the meal.

The breakfasts are also very good.

The price, quality and quantity together are worth 4 stars for value-for-money.

Another good meal
Submitted Wednesday, February 14, 2007 - 2:19pm [Dine in]

I've been to Anatoli's four times now, and each visit has been a really good experience.

This time there were three of us - two had the roast lamb and the other had a souvlaki. All meals were very good and the accompanying salads were excellent. The lamb took 25 minutes - which suits me because I like to be sure it's cooked fresh. Our visit was on a Thursday evening at around 9.00pm so it was fairly quiet.

It's worth noting the points made by other contributors here - I always try and order stuff that I can be pretty sure is being cooked fresh rather than been revved up after being cooked earlier. The meal sizes were large and you need a good appetite to get through them.

The ambience is really pleasant and I thoroughly recommend a visit - especially for the evening meals.

Pegster's has recently come under new management. There is a good lunch selection that sometimes includes Chilli con carne and Thai Chicken among the options. The food is prepared with care and the staff are very pleasant and polite. If there was a star rating for value-for-money then I would give it five stars.

Palki Restaurant116 East 15th St., North Vancouver
Mutton dressed as lamb vindaloo
Submitted Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 7:11pm [Dine in]

It was a while back but the experience still haunts me.

Early evening on a weekday at about 7.30. The carpet was strewn with bits of food - not a good sign, but maybe they just had a really busy day. I ordered my stock test meals for when trying out an Indian restaurant that I hadn't been to before; a vindaloo, a rogan josh and a few appetizers, breads and bahjis. My wife and I waited in anticipation.

When the meal was brought to the table I couldn't tell the difference between the two meals so I had to ask the waiter. It took a few seconds but he managed to identify which was which. The two meals tasted almost identical except that the 'vindaloo' was hotter than the 'rogan josh'. Utter crap. Thirty years of eating curries and this was one of the worst experiences I can remember.

The bill came to about sixty dollars. A total waste of money. Pokey Palki.

There's nothing spectacular about Nandos Chicken, however I can say that the meals I have eaten there have been completely acceptable and at a very reasonable price. Furthermore, the salads have always been fresh and crisp. Essentially what you see is what you get - consistency and good value for your money (and the chicken is very tasty!).

Things are looking up....
Submitted Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 5:19pm [Dine in]

Went there for lunch with a friend. I had the Hungarian Goulash and he had the Beef Bourguignon. Both meals were first class and very reasonably priced. The ambience is spot on - not too flashy, very comfy and warming, and plenty of table space!!! The service was good and polite, but since it wasn't busy then it's hard to really judge. This place has exactly the right balance and it has a very relaxing atmosphere. This is one place I'll definitely be returning to.

Submitted Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 3:33pm [Dine in]

I've been to Pasparos several times. What a fabulous place. Food, decor, service - all first class. It's all been said before, so it doesn't really need repeating. Now my only gripe is the damn awful cutlery they give you. Do they hammer it out of scrap food cans in their spare time? Eating would be even better if I didn't have that awful cutlery digging into the palms of my hands. I'm definitely going back - but I'll conceal my own cutlery in my pocket........
