With so many restaurants opening, service and quality has gone down hill in many. But these guys continue to deliver consistantly.
It's all about the brunch for me. I think it's the best place in Kerrisdale and one of the better west side places for sure. I don't understand some of the negative reviews but I guess there will always be someone who isn't happy.

I used to frequent the Tomato Cafe on Cambie. I've tried the new location on 3 occasions. In their expansion, something went seriously wrong. The food is still good, sometimes even great but the service has gone downhill. They seem to have a completely new set of staff which is probably the problem but I expected it to improve a couple months after the new opening.
The old room had it's quaint charm. It was odd but fun. The new room is bigger (at least I won't ever have to wait for a table) but the design is terrible. It's cold and rather ugly in my opinion. It has no warmth. The acoustics are horrid and remind me of a fast food joint. I'm sorry but when you have to speak up to drown out the clatter of plates and cutlery it's a problem.
Go if you like good food in a diner atmosphere but if you want a pleasant evening then keep walking past.

Thinking that my negative experience last month was an anomaly, I went to Shabusen last night. I was treating clients and was completely embarrassed by the dining experience. The host couldn't find the reservation and then curtly said "follow me". The table had to be wiped down whiich I don't expect when they're not busy. The staff (I know it's tough to find good servers in Vancouver now) were adequate but barely. However, the food was the not up to par at all. I wasn't expecting Tojo's or the quality of an En, but fish should taste fresh. The minute your fish tastes funky you're in trouble. Nobody got sick or anything but there were no raves of thanks from my clients either.
Shabusen...I thought I'd give you another chance but your really blew it this time.
