Rodney's Oyster House1228 Hamilton Street, Vancouver
Decent food, Bad service
Submitted Monday, October 4, 2010 - 6:14pm [Dine in]

We went to Rodney’s Oyster House this past weekend – this has got to be one of the most overrated places out there. Service was truly awful. Since when do you walk into a restaurant and have a waiter yell at you from across the room to go grab a menu yourself from a bucket as he’s too busy loafing behind the counter. Then you go to grab a menu only to find that there are none where he said there were and you spend a couple of minutes looking through various buckets and shelves for one and give up so you take one from a bucket they have outside only to get yelled at by the waiter in front of other diners to put it back. (Brutal!) At which point he eventually hands you one from behind the bar with the most pathetic attitude. It’s really a shame that the service was so bad as the food was decent. I will NOT go back there and will be passing this info onto others. Bad services seems to be a trend these days in Vancouver and I’m certainly not spending my hard earned cash in a place like this where wait staff can’t be bothered to actually provide service.

West Restaurant + Bar2881 Granville Street, Vancouver
Fine but nothing special

In all fairness to West, we went for the Dine Out menu and I always suspect that restaurants do a half-hearted sampling of food for this. While the service was impeccable, and the cocktails were amazing, I've had the same food a thousand times before in a thousand different restaurants; it was fine but nothing special. Certainly not what I expected given the reputation of the restaurant. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong things (which should not be a factor in a restaurant with this reputation)? Perhaps food writers in Vancouver don't really know what great food is (try Esca in New York)? Perhaps the restaurant was holding back their skills and creativity for the regularly priced menu items? Funny thing: I can afford to dine at West at the regular prices but won't likely go back because the Dine Out food disappointed me. If they were holding back, they're turning away future customers.

Italian Kitchen1037 Alberni Street, Vancouver
Won't be back
Submitted Monday, September 1, 2008 - 7:54pm [Dine in]

Went to Italian Kitchen with my wife and a couple of friends for a late evening drink and dessert. We'd had a nice dinner already and I'd heard about Italian Kitchen from some co-workers who'd been for lunch and enjoyed it. Poor service started when we'd first arrived. There were a couple of empty table on the patio and as it was a warm night we thought it would be nice to sit outside. We were dressed somewhat casually (but by no means sloppily) and we asked the hostess to be seated on the patio. She looked us up and down, and then said to please wait and they'd set a table for us. After about 15 minutes of waiting, another hostess came to us and told us that the patio was now closed for the evening and that we'd have to be seated upstairs (although there were several people still on the patio in the pre-dinner cocktail stage of their visit). After explaining that we had been waiting for 15 minutes for the patio, she said there was nothing that she could do and that this was a bylaw (by the way, it was only 10:15). We decided that we may as well have the dessert upstairs since we'd waited so we were led to a very overcrowded upstairs. Here, our waitress really tried to make an effort (who earned the only star in the service category) but she had too many tables to look after. We ordered the tiramisu, which were told was "as big as our head" to be summarily disappointed by both the size and the taste which as the quality of a pre-made supermarket dessert (fine but nothing special). The waitress was too busy to refill coffees or come back to drop off a bill...I had to find another server to find our server to get the bill. Finally as we were leaving, to add insult to an already injury plagued experience we noticed that not only was the patio still open, but there were new people seated there! This experience at Italian Kitchen was a complete fiasco with probably the worst service I've had in this city and mediocre (at best) food. As my title says, I won't be back, nor will I be recommending it to anyone.
