Just 'meh'
Submitted Saturday, November 15, 2008 - 2:23pm [Dine in]

My partner and I had dinner at Real for the first time. The menu has lots of interesting choices, and the place was well kept and quiet. The server was attentive though very busy; seemed like she was the only person working the front.

Went for some dim sum appies (standard stuff) along with spicy pork and string bean and szechwan chicken. The beans were tasty to start, but after a few more bites the salty taste was overwhelming. The chicken was thigh cut with lots of onions. It was okay overall; albeit sweet with some suspect cuts of chicken. The spice level was average. Together the two dishes didn't sit well.

It was okay overall, nothing that really called out to wanting to return.

Best fast food in town
Submitted Saturday, March 8, 2008 - 11:04pm [Dine in]

Been several times; love that I can get brown rice/whole wheat options.

Overall there isn't that much difference between the different burritos; similar tasting but good and filling.

I agree that it isn't the most spicy food, but adding some hot sauce or BBQ sauce helps give it a kick.

Recommended over a greasy burger any day.

Not the best in town, bet I have been back several times. The taste is overall good and consistent.

Not a big fan of eating in as the place is a bit windy with the front door repeatedly opening and not the best ambiance overall.

Great spinach gomae!

Great tasting!

FOOD
I have been back over and over again for their dinner for two. Love the red chicken coconut curry (served in a coconut to boot) and spicy green beans and shrimp. The food has been consistent even after having the same dishes at least a dozen times

SERVICE
Usually quick to top up your drinks, and the food is out to the table quick. Other than that, standard stuff.

AMBIANCE
A bit on the dark and old-school side. I like the booth style seating, but the place feels like it needs a facelift. Also, not too sure why they have big screen TVs showing sports games...seems out of place. The music is nice...though one time the cd was skipping for about 10 minutes straight...it wasn't in your face obvious, but more that you were being tortured mentally;)

Love that pizza!

FOOD
One of the few pizza joints worth returning to. Love the burger pizza with blue cheese dressing...yes it sounds gross, but try it first! The sesame topped crust is a nice touch. The prices are great btw.

SERVICE
It's fast food pizza...so they take your order and give you your pizza.

AMBIANCE
It's a small hole in the wall...though with pizza like this, I could care less.

Highly recommended!

FOOD
I have had a consistently fantastic meal with every visit,. It is great to have the opportunity to try things that I normally wouldn't order as you follow their fixed menus.

SERVICE
What can you say? The students are training on the job, so sometimes you have to be patient. For the most part, I have never had any issues , and everyone is really friendly. They also take special orders in advance, so I was able to get some personalized surprise deserts for muh main squeeze.

AMBIANCE
It is a school lounge, so you get to watch the students prep the food in each of their cooking classrooms as you eat. Makes for an interesting backdrop.

Highly recommended.

FOOD
I have only had the lunch and dinner buffets, and they have been consistently great. Lots of variety with a good mix of vegetarian and meaty options. Good spice level, and the made to order naan is a nice touch.

SERVICE
Not much to comment other than they kept my beverages topped off. Love the guy who works the door at night...great character that sets the mood for the meal.

AMBIANCE
Standard fair...nothing great or bad.

Highly recommended for a quick Indian food buffet fix.

Indian Flavours1256 Robson St, Vancouver
Tourist trap!
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 1:51pm [Dine in]

FOOD
The food was average to poor. For a place with the word 'flavour' in their name, I would have expected some of THE tastiest indian cuisine. Far from it as it was some of the blandest and watery Indian food I have had in all of downtown. The chana masala was literally a water flavourless soup. Insult to injury was the small portions...maybe that is a good thing?

AMBIANCE
This place has is confused about who it thinks it is. At a quick glance it looks like some sort of high end haute cuisine Indian restaurant. Though, upon closer inspection you notice the dirty sliverware and chipped plates.

SERVICE
To add to the confusion, the 'server' was a dude with jeans on talking on his cell phone. Being there seemed like the last thing he wanted to do. Lame!

OVERALL
I would much sooner hit one of the Indian restaurants on Davie. Not recommended.

Not the best in town, but they are consistent with some great prices and tasty sushi.

Love the cozy family run ambiance...though I sooner would order it to go as cozy sometimes means cramped and loud.

They usually have a good deal on a mixed combo for under 10 bucks that ends up being alot of sushi.

Recommended.

Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 1:28pm [Dine in]

Lots of menu variety and some tasty low-carb salad options are great.

It's a bit of a mixed bag for ambiance, as they cater to the bar crowd as well as the quiet family setting; the two clash so it makes for an odd experience when there are lots of loud/laughing inebriated folks.

The servers are good for the most part...not always around as much as you would like when it comes to refills!

Recommended overall!

Inconsistent!
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 1:22pm [Dine in]

I have had a great and a so-so experience with Fortes. The steaks have been great (the best I have had) to utterly average(cold, tough and dry). It is an expensive gamble...so I am not sure if I want to go back.

The calamari starter is awesome, and the piano filled old-school ambiance is fun to return to.

I have had a great experience the few times that I have dropped by for a weekend lunch. I love the variety and it is great to see some tasty salad-sushi options. The food has been great tasting and the service is top notch.

I love the small, private feeling booths.

My only knock would be the price; definitely on the higher end.

What with all the hype?
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 1:03pm [Dine in]

Heard lots of great things about this place before attempting to get in the long daily lines.

In the end, it is ok to average greek food served by the bucket load for portion sizes. The chicken souvalki was ok, the calamari was chewy and the rice was bland. If a huge pile of average tasting food is your thing, then you will love this place.

If they reduced their portion sizes, I am guessing that the line ups and hype would follow suit.

Pass!

Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 12:56pm [Dine in]

Yume isn't by far the best sushi in town, but I find myself returning for more. Decent prices, unagi that isn't chewy and some tasty spinach gomae all contribute to some great tasting food.

Also wanted to mention that their sushi rolls are cut into nice and bite-sized pieces...not a big fan of huge pieces that are tough to eat and chew.

Great thai 'fast food'
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 12:50pm [Dine in]

For a quick Thai food fix, this place can't be beat. The prices are reasonable for what you get, and their curries are pretty good. Service is great, and they get the orders out pretty quickly. One of the few places I have found that offer brown rice. I love the coconut red curry with pumpkin.

Look forward to going back for more!

King? I don't think so!
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 12:36pm [Dine in]

This was one of many places I have tried in the area looking to match what I am used to for shawarma in Ontario.

WOW! What a disappointment!

First thing I noticed was how shockingly dirty the place looked; looks like it was falling apart...I recall the rubber seal on its fridges hanging off...I doubt that this place is up to code.

check www.foodinspectionweb.vcha.ca/Nav-Main.htm to verify for yourself

Though, still looking for my shawarma fix I ordered a chicken plate. As I watched the person scoop tabbouleh out of a water filled container and squeeze it dry in their hands, I knew that this was going to be bad....I don't recall hands being washed between the money exchange and the tabbouleh squeezing btw.

After they finished microwaving the rice in the styrofoam container (yum!), laying out a salad with rotting lettuce and took the already pre-cut chicken bits from a half cut old frying pan and scraped it onto the mound of nastiness, I paid for the food, walked outside and threw it in the garbage.

If you want great shawarma, go for Babylon!

Best shawarma outside of Eastern Canada!
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 12:21pm [Dine in]

Being new to the area, I have had a hard time trying to find shawarma that comes close to what I am used to in Ontario. Babylon is THE closest to the real thing.

The serving sizes are good, and the chicken is damn tasty.

Though a couple of things to watch out for:

-the folks putting your order together seem to get things wrong fairly often...there doesn't seem to be an organized ordering method other than word of mouth, so if the person at the cash doesn't make your food, watch closely as they tend to mess it up

-only go at peak times. If you go during lunch time on a weekday, you will get far better quality, freshness and portion sizes than off peak times...I have experienced this firsthand on several occasions

Why is this place popular?
Submitted Saturday, February 16, 2008 - 12:12pm [Dine in]

I have been to this location 2 times so far, with both a similar disappointment. I was hoping that the second visit would be better, but it was not the case.

I ordered some :
-pork potstickers; some of the greasiest/tasteless I have ever had
-along with some BBQ pork and chicken; average tasting with lots of pork fat for the fat lovers!
-green beans and shrimp; not bad overall, but they love to coat their food in corn starch

The ambiance and service is kinda like eating in a warehouse...or industrial workshop. The servers for the most part are purely there to take and deliver orders; all business and no niceties.

The prices are low overall, but you are getting what you paid for.

I couldn't imagine returning for a 3rd time.
