Go there for good food
Submitted Monday, June 19, 2006 - 1:39am [Dine in]

I usually go there for lunch. I've tried all the lunch boxes they have and loved all of them. I go there for the thick and fresh slices of sashimi, the interesting and creative rolls (favourite: spicy tuna roll), the excellent albeit slightly oily teriyaki, etc. This is the only place I would actually order teriyaki. Most restaurant produce some sickening sweet version of this simple stir-fry dish. Not this restaurant. The taste is just right.

Not worth the effort and money
Submitted Monday, June 19, 2006 - 1:33am [Dine in]

I went there for a friend's birthday party. The place was definitely hard to find!

Out of my group of 11 friends, only 2 actually enjoyed their food. One had salmon willingdon and the other Alaskan black cod. My soup was salty and cold and ahi tuna was completely cooked through and luke warm to the touch. The birthday girl's seafood platter was dry. Another friend's mussles were full of sand. The list went on and on. For the price, I expected way more than what I got. The view and ambiance simply couldn't make it up. Never again.

Good food, poor service
Submitted Monday, June 19, 2006 - 1:25am [Dine in]

Large groups proved to be too challenging for this otherwise good restaurant. I went there several times with groups of more than 10 people. Every time, we asked for seperate bills divded by the table, and every time, they provided us with one bill consisting of more than 50 menu items in Spanish and left us to figure out what they meant and who had what. The fact that gratitute was automatically added meant piles of empty dishes and non-existing waiting staff. Once, the waitress filled my half empty wine glass with water.

Despite the poor service, food was always excellent. All the seafood dishes were tasty and fresh. Due to the sharing nature of tapas, I recommend going there in a group of 4-6 people to sample a good range of dishes while avoiding the big group issues.

Very enjoyable

I've been there several times and had always been lucky enough to get a seat right away. The super chilled sake in bamboo is a definite must. Most of the items on the menu were both creative and tasty but some could leave a bad taste in your mouth, literally. For example, the sable fish lightly charred with a torch gun. It was so fishy that no one in our group of 25 wanted to touch it. At times, service could be absent, but overall, the food and ambiance were enjoyable.

Good food. Good waiter. Really poor Maitre'D
Submitted Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 10:24pm [Dine in]

I decided to have a late lunch one sunny summer afternoon (2ish) and was looking for a quiet place to read. The Maitre'D informed me that because it was late, I could only sit either on the patio or at the bar. Since the bar was too dark, I decided to sit outside. She left me with the lunch menu.

I ordered a glass of wine, decided on what I wanted and settled in with my book. Before the waiter came back, the Maitre'D re-appeared with the bar menu and informed me rudely that the kitchen had since stopped serving lunch (in the span of 5 minutes). Nothing in the bar menu intrigued me especially when I already had my mind set. When the waiter came back with wine in hand, he was surprised to see me packing my bag. To his credit, when I complained about the Maitre'D, he quickly re-assured me that the kitchen was at my service and took my order.

The chowder and the seafood salad were amazing. The cheese cake that followed was simply heavenly. It's been 2 years and I still remember how good they tasted. However, I must say it was difficult to enjoy the food and the book when schools of tourists stood by and commented on my food and table etiquette. I miss the food and will definitely go back. But the next time, it will be during "normal" dining hours so I can sit inside and enjoy my food and book without the onlookers.

Was better
Submitted Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 10:00pm [Dine in]

I've lived in the West End for more than 3 years, and Banana Leaf on Denman used to be my favourite restaurant. There was a month when I went there 3 times a week! I took numerous friends and family members there on special occasions or for long lazy lunches and the food was always good with great service.

However, since their third location opened in Kits, I've noticed a significant difference both in food quality and service. They took some of my favourite dishes off the menu, tofu goreng off the lunch special for example. The food does not taste as good as it used to. Nowadays, the food is usually drenched in oil and too salty. The friendly Asian waiters who were always smiling all disappeared. Instead I got a Caucasian waitress who argued with me about how sweet I like my coffee. When I asked about the staff, I was informed that the more experienced staff were moved to the new location. I will still go back whenever I crave a spicy dish but definitely not as frequently.

Disappointed
Submitted Sunday, June 18, 2006 - 9:40pm [Dine in]

After seeing a TV show rating West one of the top 10 restaurant in the world, I had high expectations when I went there for my birthday. I had the 7 course tasting menu, and the food was okay at best. The food was so refined that all texture and taste was lost. I prefer more naturally tasting food than the ones I had. Perhaps some people like it this way. I guess the prices were justified by the labour intensive dishes.

The ambiance was business-like. Not really what I would call romantic, cosy or even comfortable. The best part of the experience was the service. Our waitress did not raise an eyebrow when one of my friends decided not to go with the 7 course tasting menu, and she timed the dishes well so that my friend did not feel left out when everyone else was eating.

Overall, I was very disappointed and would not go back. What's a restaurant with mediocre food.
