It is still about the food...

When my friend suggested we go to this restaurant I looked online and saw no reviews and no comments but I was open. When I phoned I was told "no problem" getting a table, I was surprised and then when I walked in there was one lone diner who I recalled had been there the last time I ate here. I was concerned and wondering if I should make another choice and how to orchestrate a graceful exit but then the amuse bouche arrived and I knew I was in the right place.

The wine list is small but respectable with an emphasis on local BC wines. We thoroughly enjoyed a respectable chardonnay. We ate from all portions of the menu and split the results. Our culinary journey started with a wonderful spinach salad, fresh, local, tangy and just wonderful. We moved on to enjoy a wonderful medley of cheeses in the fondue with perfectly dried homemade bread and fresh apples to dip. The steak frites was not just expertly prepared (chef's choice) and delightfully succulent, the fries were truly shoestring and cooked perfectly to a golden brown then served with a surprise aioli with fresh tarragon that we simply had to have more of to satisfy our now craving palates. We finished with a traditional pots de creme in chocolate graced with creme fraiche and fresh strawberries. All in all this was a wonderful meal, served by a perfectly attentive server in a delightful small restaurant.

Bon Appetit!

I have enjoyed Barney's on Granville Street for many years. I have been perhaps three or four times to the new Barney's on Main Street and give it a solid B+ rating. I only use A ratings for "fine dining so B+ is good to great on my scale. The food is delicious, served up nicely, hearty and healthy, the staff are friendly and professional, it is well priced for quality food and I like the Main Streetiness of it all.

It is a place where I can and have eaten in a suit or my sweat pants and feel equally comfortable and at home. In fact it is like going to a friends home for a meal (except only on rare occasions would my friends make me pay...grin). All in all I highly recommend it and hope that you enjoy as many good times at Barney's as I have over the years.

Price kills it...

This is a good restaurant with excellent service and great food but I think small portions for the price. I have been several times as it is in my neighbourhood. The food is delicious but the portions are small and I often feel like I wanted more to eat but just give up because I think the price point is high. The reason I come back is the staff are friendly and the food is tasty.

My friend and I enjoyed very good appetizers (the salmon pate was particularly good maintaining a strong salmon flavour in a delicate creamy and spreadable pate). We also had the burger based on the recommendation preceding ours. It was a very good burger. Our server Angel was pleasant and funny and definitely attentive. We enjoyed ourselves and would definitely return.

The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere and at first glance appears to be a good find, however, the great green fades quickly once you are left staring at it for ages waiting for a server to appear and annoint the table with some fabulous fare. The only issue here was the total absence of fabulous. The veggie dish was definitely solid but the Pad Thai was disappointing to say the least. Finally I had to commandeer the server at the till in order to be released from my brief sojourn into mediocrity, it is a journey I do not intend to repeat.

The food is healthy, wholesome and hearty fare from Ireland. I have enjoyed many meals here and one of my favourite later night snacks or hearty lunches is the grilled cheese sandwich. It is the best in Vancouver and the fish and chips are noteworthy as well. The ambiance of the restaurant is superbly authentic and uniquely Vancouver with the greenhouse outback in Gaolers Mews. It is like eating in your own living room and has an atmosphere of convivial joviality which is commensurate with its owner and manager Sean Heather.
