Went to La Bretagne today for breakfast and had a wonderful experience. I ordered cinnamon sugar Crepes and an espresso and both were delectable. Great value at under 8 dollars including a sufficient tip. The establishment seemed authentic with the employees speaking french, the french music and the decor. I will definitely be back to try some of their savoury options. Overall a great spot to go for a quick taste of France if you are in the West End area.
The Basil Pasta Bar is a small cafe on Davie in Vancouver's vibrant Yaletown neighborhood. I had a simple green salad with goat cheese and a Gnocchi dish with bolognese. They use fresh ingredients, it was well executed, terrific presentation, and best of all my meal with a salad and a drink was $15. One of the best values I've seen in any type of cuisine. It is a relaxed atmosphere with pay at the counter before and seat yourself policies. Its a must go if you are in the area, I loved it.
Stopped by the Salty Tongue with my uncle for lunch awhile back and had an average experience. I had the build your own sandwich which happened to be perfect. My uncle on the other hand ordered the "Heather Pot Pie" which is a scottish meat pie only it didn't seem to have any meat. This aside I would try this place again because they have great specialty coffees they pull from Stumptown varieties. The communal long table and funky copper wall inside are super modern and enjoyable as well.
Went to Memphis Blues with some friends and ordered the Elvis Platter and it delivered. Great way to try out the various cuts of Southern barbeque cookery. From brisket to ribs it had it all. They have a unique system where you order at the counter and bring it all out when it is ready; it was very fast and efficient. Great value, atmosphere and means to test out southern barbeque. Just a warning that it probably isn't the spot to be if you're seeking vegetables, but I think most would have already figured that out.
If you are into great Italian food Anton's probably not the best place to be. There is something to be said about the fact that they are serving decent pasta dishes with enormous portion sizes. If you are looking for a great Italian dining experience there is plenty better options in the Vancouver area. The decision is whether or not to line up for a significant period of time for mediocre pasta in huge portions. I surely wouldn't discourage anyone from testing out this place because it has an upside.
The Hamilton Street Grill has delivered on a number of occasions. After being to this restaurant a couple of times with nothing but great food and service I felt it was worthy of a top notch grade. I have had the papardelle, rissotto, and a steak and all have been spectacular. It really is unique for a great steakhouse to offer a variety of choices and still maintain quality throughout. The service has been great and the atmosphere is nice because it is calmer than other chain steakhouses I have experienced in the past. They have a bar area and televisions above it for the sports fan seeking a good meal and a beverage. Overall the HSG is an excellent restaurant in the Yaletown area and I wood highly recommend it.
The Diva at Met was an unforgettable dining experience. The service was impeccable; almost too good if I had to have any complaint about this establishment. Utilizing as many local ingredients as possible, the chef at Diva has created a collection of Pacific Northwest dishes that are truly amazing. After a local green salad which was presented well with simple ingredients I enjoyed the beet and goat cheese cannelloni and it was incredible. The chef managed to create a dish that played with texture and different methods of preparing the beets to express the main focus of the dish. My entire party was pleased with the food and the atmosphere. If you are looking for a first class dining experience in Vancouver this is definitely a spot that should not be overlooked.
I went in to Garlic & Chili one afternoon and it is an extremely small space in a North Burnaby strip mall (seats approximately 15). The owner stopped what he was doing in the kitchen to come out and serve me. He brought out green tea and catered to my every need. There is a wide selection and the food was great. It was an excellent value so I would definitely recommend checking it out if you like asian cuisine. There is also a decent asian bakery adjacent to it that is comparable to other great asian bakeries in the Vancouver area.
We went to "The Foundation" after a long bicycle ride one afternoon and it was definitely a worthwhile stop. They have a great menu consisting entirely of vegetarian choices. The service was terrible but really a non-issue considering the incredible value. There is a very youthful feel to the place with loud hip hop music and revolutionary quotes on the walls. The decor is funky and rustic and they serve beer in mason jars which I happened to like. Overall a must go for vegetarian options if you don't mind hip hop and can deal with shotty service.
