not what it used to be
Submitted Monday, April 13, 2009 - 12:46am [Dine in]

I had dinner with family and waited over 45 minutes for the first dish of food to come. We received some free XO sauce, so we ate that as our appetizer while waiting. It looked like everyone else in the restaurant were also waiting just as long. The squab was chewy and didn't have much flavour, not how it usually taste. We also had a peking duck. This particular time it was prepared better than most of the other Chinese restaurants. Our vegetable dish was pea shoots in superiour broth. There were literally 50 aphids floating in the soup and even more covering the leaves. But since we were all so hungry we ate the extra protein. We also got our choice of complimentary dessert, we usually get the baked tapioca pudding which is really good. Everything else was nothing special.

solid

I shared appetizers with my friends at the table. We ordered a crab dip which was tasty but really rich. The house salad was fresh and a great before my entree. I ordered prime rib which was tender and the cut was exactly what I asked for. The sauce or juice that came with the prime rib was salty and didn't have much flavour. The sauce was actually terrible and dissapointing. But the rest of my meal made up for it. First impression of service was ok, I went with some friends and we look young, so the waiter did not treat us normally, not rude or anything. Just not like how he would probably normally treat customers. When one of my friends ordered a beer his attitude changed. The waiter came often to check on our table and was really friendly, so in the end we left him a nice tip.

Kintaro Ramen788 Denman Street, Vancouver
not so great
Submitted Monday, April 13, 2009 - 12:21am [Dine in]

I went to Kintaro for the first time and expected something better. The ramen is good but nothing too special. It was a cold day so a big bowl of noodles was right. The soup was a bit too salty. I think the price is ok, a bit pricey for what you get and the service, but I guess the location is on Denman. Before we even get a table they take your order, and we barely finished eating and the waitress brings the bill. The seating is uncomfortable and we were sitting directly across another group of people. It was awkward for everyone to have a conversation. They seem to turn a large number of tables really quickly. I don't think its worth the line up and traffic to get to downtown for this type of food.

decent dim sum
Submitted Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 7:34pm [Dine in]

This place is good for quick dim sum. But the wait will still be around 20 minutes on weekends. They have a large variety of dishes going around. The temperature of the food seems to be hotter then other dim sum places which are around the same price. Service is pretty much the same you would get at a Chinese restaurant, except for the actual waiters. We made a custom order which never came. We asked another waiter, and finally they tell us they are sold out. If the prices were not so low, I don't think I would go.

terrible management and service
Submitted Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 7:27pm [Dine in]

It takes forever for someone to notice our table needed the slip to order any food. I noticed the more filling items come to our table first. Our sashimi did not come until near the end our the meal with less pieces than we ordered. I also noticed the table beside us had their order of mango pudding reduced. They ordered 6 puddings, but only 2 came. So they kept ordering more, but only 2 bowls would come each time. They seem under staffed and un-attentive. A few of their selection of pop was sold out. The vegetables which came with teriyaki had gone bad. Tasted sour and disgusting. Most of the other items ordered tasted on par as other AYCE. I don't think I would go back.

long wait for ok food
Submitted Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 7:17pm [Dine in]

The lineups are too long to wait for the kind of food they serve. The food is fresh and cooked well, but not really worth the wait. Some of the side dishes which come with the entree's are not too good, but makes the plate of food look bigger. Service is friendly, our waiter gave us free dip and pita after we ordered because he could see we looked really hungry and tired. Amazing value for Greek food.

Amazing food
Submitted Monday, November 17, 2008 - 10:39pm [Dine in]

The food is delicious and arrives quickly. It is all presented nicely. One drawback for the food is some items are too salty. I would say their presentation of the food is really outstanding.
We had the really salty eel gratin which was on the special menu. But I guess with drinks it would be alright. Some of the items seemed to be better value than others. But overall, it is a bit pricey to go as a regular dining option. Without drinks for 3 people, dinner was about $70 with tax and tip.
This is a place to enjoy with friends and visiting guests. It was a really unique experience.

Good late night food
Submitted Monday, November 17, 2008 - 10:31pm [Dine in]

I went here on a Saturday night at around 12:20am and still had to wait 15 minutes for a table! The decor is ok, it seemed to be a little cluttered. We ordered their gyoza's, they were better than I expected but not extraordinary. They were juicy and flavourful and the meat was not too fatty like other places. Sashimi we had seemed to be over priced, but was tasty. The food arrives quickly and is presented well, but not as nice as Guu. The servers were friendly and they did not seemed to be under staffed. Overall it came to approximately $51 with tax but not including tip for 4 people as a late night snack with no drinks. This seemed to be outstanding value as it is around the same price as going out for late night Chinese food, except for Chinese we would have left overs for lunch the next day. I would definitely come back for late night snacks or dinner but I don't think I would go during their busy dinner periods.
