Mr. Mikes Steakhouse & Bar20020 Willowbrook Drive, #300, Langley
Food so so but nice surprise at the end
Submitted Wednesday, August 8, 2012 - 5:03pm [Dine in]

Had a late lunch at this location on Monday, Aug. 6 at 3:30 pm. We both had the Mr Mike's steak sandwich. The meat was cooked to order correctly, and it was open faced. We laughed when we saw they used one 4 inch chunk of a bun and that one of our pieces was 3/4 thick and the other got the 1/4 sliver remainder ...so neither of us were completely happy. There was absolutely NOTHING else on the bun, but the smallish piece of meat. No condiments, no lettuce leaf, no tomato, nothing..... The fries that came with were fine but not freshly fried. Two onion rings also accompanied that were good. We also shared a ceasar salad to start and it was good.

The server saw I was opening a gift after the meal and asked if it was a birthday and yes (the next day). She offered a free dessert but we declined as we were too full and it would have been rude to ask to take it home. A lovely surprise came when the bill was given to us - was that the manager suggested to the server to deduct one of the Carona beers we had ordered instead. That was a very nice gesture and a top notch customer service act.

Pretentious and never again
Submitted Monday, February 6, 2012 - 1:31pm [Dine in]

This was the second time I've come here for lunch and the second time I was disappointed. My boss was treating myself and another co-worker who was leaving us for a special lunch. The place was totally empty at 12:30 on a Monday except for one other table. At least the musty stinky carpet smell wasn't there.

I ordered the green salad and it was good and then had the Seafood Risotto. The 2 shrimp in it tasted as if they were going off and the mussels didn't taste much better. The scallop was fine and the salmon was ok but the actual risotto was a congealed mass of overcooked rice. It was not creamy at all and was a big lump instead. I would never order this again.

My co-workers said their meals were just ok, no one was impressed, and for the prices they charge, that just doesn't do. I truly would have enjoyed a hamburger and fries more or even a sandwich and bowl of soup. I won't be returning. The best part of lunch was that we got parking right outside the restaurant!

High expectations, but disappointing
Submitted Monday, February 6, 2012 - 1:24pm [Dine in]

I took my employee here for a goodbye dinner and we were excited to eat here. We were given a one page menu and when we asked for items we saw online on the regular menu that were more expensive, we were told that those were not available, just the DOV menu was. NO where on the website did it say this...so first disappointment. We had limited choices and none were that appealing. But we were already here.

We both settled on the Caesar cellar salad and the croutons were delicious. Romaine is Romaine after all...we both ordered the Duck Breast that was an extra $5.00 each. It was a small non crispy fairly flavourless breast with something akin to a small slice of bread pudding and a GREY smear of sweet potato puree (grey???) with a few dribbles of something red. Tiny portion and none of it memorable. There was absolutely no choice of dessert except one which was a chocolate cardamom pannacotta with 2 teeny cookies. My guest who is 6 mths pregnant didn't find the pannacotta appealing and when she asked if she could have the creme brule instead was flatly told NO.

Soon another table was seated beside us and they too were shocked at the limited menu and they also asked if they could order from the regular menu and pay the higher prices, but were also told NO. They in short order decided to leave and eat elsewhere and I wish we had done the same for a "special farewell" dinner that was not special. I won't return.

Tepid food and no coffee refills offered
Submitted Saturday, October 1, 2011 - 7:34pm [Dine in]

Went for brunch today with a friend even though I was scared of the middle aged silver haired waitress so often mentioned by other reviewers. (not in a good way) We got a seat in a booth and yes! they are so wobbly that all movements by customers in attached booths feel every time someone gets in or out. Yikes put a few nails in those booths! My friend ordered the feta & tomato omelette and I ordered the mushroom & cheese omelette. We both found that both omelettes had scant fillings and both were BLAND. We also both agreed that our food was barely warm and the potatoes/yams tasted almost cold (and bland) and as if they were from yesterday...yuck. Toast wasn't quite toast but more like bread with barely any butter/margarine on it. Smidge of salad was fine.

I'm not too thrilled with the tiny coffee cups either or should I say they are more thimble sized. Not once were we asked if we liked our meals and never in the 45 minutes we were there were we ever offered a refill on the coffee. I finally had to ask the silver haired lady and she brought it right over. We had no "rude" problems with her but I could totally see her as a bootcamp sargeant barking out orders with a devilish glint in her steeley eyes. Her name on the bottom of the bill was Gilli so I'm assuming it's prob short for Gillian. I don't believe I need a second time visit and would highly recommend you go to Red Wagon instead. It's fab food there and piping hot just the way I like it!

You call this a hotdog?? Come on........
Submitted Friday, June 10, 2011 - 9:00pm [Dine in]

A friend and I came here a few weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon. Only one other couple was there. I was a little surprised at the limited menu, but the restaurant seemed clean and it sits right on the beach so good view. I ordered the pulled pork poutine and the delicious sounding hot dog. My companion ordered the fish and chips. I got poutine without the pulled pork, but ok, and then the hot dog was set in front of me. It took everything I had in me to not laugh out loud!! Imagine a cheap little plastic basket with a bun gaping open (straight out of the bag) with a boiled weiner laying in it. Two plastic packets each of mustard and relish lay beside my bun. Nothing else!! As bare-arsed as you can get!! It looked like a 5 yr old made mommy a lovely lunch....
The poutine was ok (not amazing as I was told by the server). Quite a small portion too. My friend's one tiny piece of very very darkly fried fish lay forlornly beside some dark fries and a tablespoon of coleslaw. I kind of felt like we were in the land of small...again another small portion. So let it be said that this will be a one time visit only.

Very tasty food at a good price!
Submitted Tuesday, December 21, 2010 - 11:31pm [Dine in]

My friends and I have now gone here (only on wkends) about 5-6 times and we've enjoyed all our meals! I've had the burger, steak dinner and prime rib dinner and can't complain at all. 9.95 for the dinners is well worth it...I couldn't cook that meal at home for cheaper. I usually order a caesar drink which varies with the bartender making it and my friends usually have wine which they enjoy. This is now a regular place during the w/end afternoons. Give it a try....decor could use updating but it's a neighbourhood pub after all...

Submitted Tuesday, December 21, 2010 - 11:02pm [Dine in]

Stopped in on the way home with my bff on a whim. We both had a small broth and the grilled pork, vermicilli, salad, fried springroll plate. The broth was steaming HOT and deliciously flavoured! The food was fresh, with a crisp salad and a flavourful sauce. Neither of us could find any fault with the food or the service. We will definitely be going back and often. I already am hungry for more!

Great view, poor food, for tourists who don't know any better
Submitted Tuesday, December 21, 2010 - 10:17pm [Dine in]

My boss and I had come here during the summer 2010 and I loved the view from our unclean table. Kind of shabby looking restaurant that could certainly use some cleaning and sprucing up. The entire draw of this restaurant could ONLY come from the view, certainly not from the food they serve. Mediocre at best. I'm embarassed that tourists would think that this is the type of food that you get in Vancouver, when almost any restaurant in the city could do better....including Rotten Ronnie's (Mc's). Also way to expensive!

Submitted Wednesday, November 17, 2010 - 10:18pm [Dine in]

A friend and I stopped in on the way home. Due to previous reviews, seemed like a good place to eat. I had a ceasar drink (ok) and my friend had a glass of house red (no complaints). We shared the larger caesar salad 8.00 and it was fine. The homemade bread with balsamic vinegar was very nice. I ordered the Pollo Mista in a cream sauce 17.00 and I liked it and took more than 1/2 of it home for lunch the next day. My friend ordered the Jambalaya Risotto 16.00 and she didn't like it much.

We were never asked how our meals were as it was very hard to find our female server. She didn't seem very interested in her job anyhow... I tasted my friend's risotto and it tasted like tomato paste added to mushy rice (way overcooked!). When the same server asked if she was finished...I just had to mention that my friend didn't really care for it (friend is too nice to speak up). The server did ask if she wanted anything else, but again, didn't really seem to care either way. She declined.

We had to flag down another server as ours went missing again to pay our bill. Nothing was adjusted on the bill to compensate for the mushy risotto...even a couple of dollars off would have shown some effort....

Probably won't be back. The portions are very good though, but if you don't like your meal, who cares?

Good burgers but get rid of those gangly plants hanging over our heads
Submitted Tuesday, October 26, 2010 - 11:24pm [Dine in]

Came for burgers with a friend Oct. 26/10. Only one other table at 5:00 pm but the place filled up by the time we were leaving. We both ordered the #5 BBQ burger with cheese, bacon and mushrooms. The mushrooms actually couldn't have been sliced any thinner...almost see through. The burger was flavourful and quite messy so use your extra napkins. One of us had the wedge fries and the other the onion rings so we could share them. I was disappointed in the onion rings as they were too oily, no onion flavour and they were thinly battered instead of breaded. They almost seemed like they were commercial frozen ones. The wedge fries weren't very plentiful, but they were fine. These burgers were 13.50. I would return again in the future and perhaps try something new. Pir male server was pleasamt. I felt there could be a good cleaning and a general tossing out of the dozens of hanging plant baskets over your head...kind of weird that.

Tasty pizza but not as DEEP as previous reviews say
Submitted Tuesday, October 26, 2010 - 11:07pm [Take-out]

I stopped off on my way home on Oct. 25 because I was dying to try this place after all the great reviews. I ordered the medium Canuck which had bacon, ham, not much pepperoni and mushroom. It wasn't nearly as deep-dish as I had read about in other's reviews. Also it didn't weight 2 lbs either. For that I was disappointed...The sauce wasn't the best I've had but was fine. The pizza's crust was good with the cornmeal and a slightly sweet tinge to it. I liked it. I ended up getting 4 meals out of this medium pizza and for almost $20.00 I think that was pretty good value. I will return in a couple of months and try another special with different toppings.

Good Prawn Tempura
Submitted Tuesday, October 26, 2010 - 11:01pm [Dine in]

I've been here approx 8-9 times and I always order the same thing. Very good tasting miso soup, great prawn/yam tempura and california roll. I agree with others that the rolls are never rolled properly and are almost always falling apart before you even pick them up. Never evenly cut and very sloppy on the ends with filling hanging out. Yesterday was the first time I noticed that there was no avocado slices, instead it was the tiniest portion of avocado paste only...wierd. The soup is 1.25, the prawn or mixed prawn/yam tempura is 7.50 and the california roll 8 pc is 3.25. Be prepared to feel totally rushed to eat so the next person can sit down. Waitresses try hard and boy do they work!

A friend and I went this week and had the veal scallopini and gnocchi with meat sauce. I found the flour that the veal was dredged in, put into the pan too soon and there was an uncooked flour taste. The boiled potatoes and vegetables were ok. I don't know if I would order this again. My friend really enjoyed her gnocchi and said it was tasty. We shared a cesar salad that was plenty for two and enjoyed the bread with balsamic/olive oil to begin with. I had a caesar cocktail that was fine and she enjoyed her glass of red wine. We had the exclusive attention of the owner as we were there at opening and he is quite the character! We may return sometime in the future and I would choose another meal.

Submitted Sunday, October 17, 2010 - 3:04pm [Dine in]

Came with high hopes and left satisfied. I had the pot roast dinner and the meat was very tender and flavourful. Mashed potatoes and veg were very good as well. We shared a delicious cesar salad that was plenty for both of us. My daughter had the cheesy chicken broccoli which she felt was a little one-note in taste although plenty of chicken and good creamy sauce. Our hostess was very pleasant, although perhaps a bit too revealing about her personal life. She was very customer service oriented which we very much appreciated. We will definitely be back for good home cooking!

Was just OK
Submitted Thursday, October 7, 2010 - 3:51pm [Dine in]

After reading the review below, my friend and I decided to give this place a try last night. We arrived at 5:00 and were the first ones. They have a 4:30 - 6:30 pm $21.95 special during the week for soup or salad, pasta (only) entree and dessert. Hmmm sounds pretty good. We both ordered the ceasar salad (was asiago cheese - too strongly flavoured) good amount of anchovy (whew). That was ok. I ordered the fettucine with chicken, artichokes and sun dried tomatoes. The artichokes were the pickled kind which kind of made it a weird choice in the cream sauce. The chicken was in slices and didn't have that much flavour. My friend ordered the pasta carbonara which she said was good. I tasted it and it didn't appeal to me. Both dishes though do have fresh pasta which was nice. We were offered a choice of cheesecakes and we both chose the pomegranite/berry one, but then the waitress came back and said they were out of it. Instead we both chose the limonetta cheesecake and it was nicely presented although a little too sweet for my taste. Very friendly waitress who gave good service. There were only 2 other tables filled when we left an hour later. Might go back and order something else in the future.

Submitted Friday, September 24, 2010 - 9:09pm [Dine in]

My friend and I had read the previous reviews and the Prime Rib sounded wonderful! Alas, it wasn't on the regular menu last night (Sept. 23). They do it on "special" on Wed. & Sat. Well after the we chose, we definitely will go back to try it too! I ordered the short rib dinner with mashed potatoes and grilled seasonal vegetables. The ribs were so soft and tender and flavourful!! Excellent! My friend had the sirloin steak, mashed and grilled veg and she too said it melted in her mouth as well. These dinners were approx $26-28 each. Both of us had delicious au jus with each of our meals. We shared a Ceasar salad 8.00 as it was big enough for two and the fresh bread with the olive oil/balsamic dip was a touch I haven't seen/had in years.

Well you would think that with delicious meals, maybe, just maybe the cocktails would be less than great? Nope! We both had a ceasar drink 5.50 and they too were excellent! We will for sure make many return visits in the future! I believe the very good waitress was also quite pleased by our tips!

We came here for dessert on a Saturday night after eating elsewhere. We got there at 8:50 pm and saw that they were closing at 9:00. We asked if we could come in for just desserts as we saw a large table was just starting their dinners and they said fine. We all ordered coffee and had a pecan pie, cheesecake with cherry topping and a peanut butter cheesecake. We all tasted all of them and were impressed with the very good taste and freshness of all three. The waiter was very pleasant and they actually stayed open till 10 pm to accommodate everyone. Great customer service. We took a look at the lunch and dinner menus while there and we think we will be back.

Submitted Wednesday, August 18, 2010 - 10:34pm [Dine in]

Five of us went here for a birthday dinner and all because of the great reviews here. We ordered dumpling soup and 5 dishes and rice. We were very surprised to get a large purple coloured soup with what looked like white bread squares floating in it..."wait this isn't our dumpling soup!" We asked the waitress about it and she just shrugged her shoulders. O---kay...... Well we all tasted it but it wasn't to anyone's liking. Then we worried that either we got this by mistake or that possibly??? we would ALSO get the dumpling soup still? Well, we started getting the Chicken Kung Poh and Broccolil/Beef so we just forgot about the ordered soup...but wait a minute, here comes the soup afterall! Quickly trying to dump the purple soup out of our bowls to have the other soup was interesting....Then we received the shrimp and cashews, flat rice noodles with veg and honey garlic ribs. Well everything was fine, but none of us were loving the food. Then another surprise....another huge bowl of soup is coming!! WHAT? But we didn't order a third soup! We ask our waitress what it was that she just put down and her answer was "I don't know!"....O----kay, WTH?
Well it turned out to be a cheez-wiz coloured warm something with floating tapioca and what looked like canned fruit cocktail in it. A few of the brave ones tried it and said it wasn't fruit, but potato! Weird...none of us ate it and thanked the waitress and we were happy that the 2 extra soups weren't on the bill. Also, even though a number of beer varieties were on the menu, all they had was one. I think one visit was enough for us. A shame.
