El Mariachi Mexican Restaurant3853 Hastings Street, #A, Burnaby
A cool mexican restaurant in north Burnaby
Submitted Saturday, January 21, 2012 - 4:59pm [Dine in]

I ate lunch here with my wife today. It's on the north side of hastings and was kind of hard to notice. Look up! It's on the second floor. Upon entering, nice cozy little place, very mexican looking inside, nice mexican music playing. Reminded me of when I was in Mexico, until I looked outside to see our gloomy weather :(

When we sat we were given complimentary chips with a salsa verde (green salsa) for dipping. It was excellent, and had a nice fresh taste of lime to it.
We shared a yummy pitcher of sangria for $15.95
I ordered the white fish tacos for 13.95, she ordered the polo con mole for $11.95
We both enjoyed our food and both are looking forward to returning at night time to try out some other menu items and see some live music -)

Another good Italian Restaurant in North Burnaby
Submitted Saturday, January 21, 2012 - 12:49pm [Dine in]

Ate here last night with my wife, nice little Italian restaurant. Service was good and friendly.

Appies:
My wife had - Italian Sausage and Artichokes.....Italian sausage and artichoke, sauteed with garlic and white wine
I tried a bite of this and was surprised, it was better then I was expecting.. the flavors went well together.
I had - Mussels Marinara....Steamed mussels with garlic, olive oil, fresh herbs & tomatoes
This was great, a 4 out of 5 for me. Lots of mussels, sauce was great and perfect for dipping the bread into. The bowl was clean when I was finished. I just wished that tasty sauce had a little texture in it, some chopped onions would have made it perfect.

Entrees:
My wife had - New York steak ai Funghi....10 oz. New York Steak topped with mushrooms and fresh herbs
She enjoyed this meal and it looked great as well.
I had - Risotto ai Funghi....Rice with mushrooms and parmesan cheese
This dish was tasty, I'd rate it a 3.5 out of 5.

Dessert
Wife ordered - Creme Caramel .....Caramel custard our new dessert
She liked it
I ordered - Chocolate Mousse ....A mouth-watering delight
Was a good light and tasty mousse.

Overall, nice place, nice staff, good food, prices were ok (some items a little over priced in my opinion)
We'll return sometime.

I went here yesterday for lunch with my father. It's a nice looking clean place with friendly staff. Our waiter was a cool guy. We ordered 2 pizzas, the Margherita - $18 & the Prosciutto Arugula - $16 and we had half of each kind. I thought both were good. The margherita was great! A nice lunch under $40 for the 2 of us, I will be back in the future to try out the dinner menu with my wife.

A nice burnaby restaurant, a little over priced I think
Submitted Saturday, January 7, 2012 - 12:33pm [Dine in]

My wife and I ate here last night for dinner. The place is nice and the view is pretty cool. The staff were professional and friendly. They gave us some nice warm bread and whipped butter when we sat.

For appies we each had..
FREE RANGE BISON CARPACCIO $14
Basil infused olive oil, shaved pecorino cheese, tomato aioli, micro greens
It was good, the meat was spread thinner on the plate then most places do, there was a lot of cheese on top.

For entrees we each had..
PEKIN DUCK BREAST $28
Marinated with sherry, soy & brown sugar, star anise poached apple, caramelized yams,
Chinese 5 spice sauce
When ordering the waiter suggested adding a side of vegetables so we split a $5 bowl of spinach.
The duck was ok-good. Just slightly cooked more then we prefer it to be and a little tougher then usual. The vegetables were good, the extra side of spinach a little too buttery tasting for me.

Dessert..
We split the Dessert Sampler for Two - $15
which was a chai tea creme brule, chocolate mousse cake & Cinnamon Poached Pear
Warm pecan brioche pudding, butterscotch rum sauce
It was all tasty, the Creme Brule was the best part -)

Overall, nice place, good food, a bit expensive. Food wasn't so great that I feel the need to return. Was good but at high prices I have higher expectations.

Been here many times and always enjoyed the food. It is a small place that gets busy so coming at certain times can be crowded. Ordering takeout is also a challenge at busy times because it's very loud in there and nowhere to really stand once you're inside to grab your food without feeling like you are in someone else's personal space.. but the good food keeps us coming back.

My wife and I had lunch here yesterday, nice looking, clean restaurant. We ordered 1 miso soup, 1 agedashi tofu, 1 gomae, 1 california roll, 1 salmon sashimi and 1 spicy tuna sashimi. (drank tea) The bill came to $31.98. Everything was great, the sashimi here is very fresh and the spicy sauce they use for their sashimi is excellent. We will return.

The wife and I went to try out the pizza here twice. The first visit we ordered a Large Margherita Fresca - Tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella (bocconcini) for $33.95 and the second time was a Large Campangnola - Tomato sauce, arucola, bocconcini cheese, fresh sliced tomato for $33.95.
Service was fast and the pizzas were cooked perfectly. Both pizzas were good but I've always heard how great the pizza was here so I was expecting more I guess. It was good but it didn't blow my mind or anything. I'd eat here again if I was in the area. I wouldn't go around telling all my friends they have to try this place though.
I liked the look of the restaurant, the pizza oven is pretty cool and the large glass bottle chandelier is great.

Had a nice sunday brunch here
Submitted Sunday, October 23, 2011 - 4:30pm [Dine in]

I came here for sunday brunch with my wife. It's a cute place and staff are friendly. The service was quick here also. We ate...
TAGLIATELLE CARBONARA for $16 - Dish looked nice and tasted good.
YARROW MEADOWS DUCK LEG CONFIT for $17 - The duck was cooked perfectly and tasted great.
For dessert we had the ESPRESSO CRÈME BRÛLÉE for $7 and that was yummy also.
With a glass each of pinot gris it was an overall good meal. Portions were between average and on the smaller side. Good thing they brought bread, butter, croissants and jam to our table with the meal!
Would I return? Sure if it was close by or a friend wanted to go. Menu seemed a little small.

I've been here once before a few years ago and wanted to try it out again so I went for dinner with my father. We showed up at 8pm on a saturday night without a reso and there happened to be one open table for 2 so we were in luck. Nice little place with very friendly staff.
Food - for an appetizer we shared the Vongole a la marinara (clams in sauce) and dipped our bread into the sauce. Sauce was a bit watery and thin. Wish it had some texture, onions, something.. was average, 2.5 out of 5.
For my entree I had the Risotto a la bascaio (risotto with mushrooms & prosciutto) Very good and had good sized pieces of mushroom and prosciutto. I would eat this dish again and give it a 4 out of 5. My father had a spaghetti with meatballs and was very happy with what he ate. The place is very good priced as well. His pasta was $15 and my risotto was $14. We both would come here again in the future.

Ragazzi Pizza Co.2996 East 22nd Ave, Vancouver
Best Pizza I've ordered in Vancouver
Submitted Saturday, October 22, 2011 - 11:38am [Delivery]

I was told about Ragazzi Pizza Co. by some family members and they enjoyed it so I decided to try them out.
I checked out their website (great site) and it has pictures and descriptions of their pizzas. I also like that they have the option to get whole wheat crust.
The 2 pizzas I ordered were..
SPACCANAPOLI - Sausage, Spinach, Ricotta - 17″ for $19.95
Excellent and the ricotta on a pizza is awesome!
MARGHERITA ORIGINALE - Bocconcini, Fresh Basil, Italian Tomato, Olive Oil - 17" for $19.45
Very good as well =)
The total came to about $50.50 including tax and an out of area delivery charge. It's a little expensive but this is good pizza, light and tasty. It's thin, like when I was in Italy and had to eat my pizza with a fork.
This is the best pizza that I've ever ordered to my door and will order it again the next time we want good real Italian pizza!

Beautiful Italian restaurant on Burrard, food is a 3.5 out of 5 for me
Submitted Monday, October 17, 2011 - 7:30pm [Dine in]

Went here for lunch with a friend, it's a beautiful restaurant.
Appetizer I had was - BEEF CARPACCIO A LA ROMAGNOLA CON ARUGULA E PINOLI $16.95
Was good but different then the usual carpaccio I would eat. It had mustard and capers on it. It was tasty but I prefer it without the extras added.
My pasta was - RIGATONI A LA BOLOGNESE $19.95
Once again, good pasta.. nothing special that I would tell all my friends about or anything but I had a good meal.
Overall the place is very nice, the staff were nice and the food was good. I'd give the food a 3.5 out of 5.

Would I return.. well I don't think I would recommend this place, it's good but not "awesome" to me.. I would return here if someone else wanted me to come along with them though.

Submitted Sunday, October 16, 2011 - 1:40pm [Dine in]

We had a saturday night 7pm reso here for my 30th birthday. They gave us 3 tables each seating 10 right at center stage. My first impressions of the place.. Nice looking and good feeling to it. I liked how they had the large flat screens on the walls that had beautiful pictures on a slide show to look at, nice touch..

For food the wife and I ordered the 4 course supper club menu for $55 a person and we ordered different food so we could split each course in half and try both.

Appetizer #1 - Bufala Mozzarella e Peperone alla Genovese - The cheese was perfect and delicious, the rest was good but the cheese really stood out to me.
Appetizer #2 - Carpaccio - one of the best I've ever had. Excellent.
Pasta #1 - Risotto d'Anatra (duck risotto) - Was very good
Pasta #2 - Pappardelle con Coniglio (rabbit & pasta) - This was very tasty and had a great sauce.
I also sampled someone's gnocchi and it was so light and delicate. Melted in your mouth. The best gnocchi I've even eaten.
Main #1 - Rombo (halibut) - The fish was good/ok but nothing to recommend or try or have next time.
Main #2 - Bistecca (flat iron steak) - was very good and would definitely try this next time.
Dessert #1 - Creme Brulee - yummy, ok but I've had better.
Dessert #2 - Panna Cotta - was ok but nothing special and won't have it next time.

Dinner music started at 8pm with a guitarist on stage that was awesome and got the dinner crowd happy.
At 10pm Federico was singing with a back up singer and drummer. It was very enjoyable and people were jumping out of their seats to dance. I had a great time just watching and the music was good! This lasted from 10:00 until midnight.

Overall the food was all good and 4 out of 5 for me. I enjoyed the food more then the desserts. I would for sure return to this place as well as recommend it to friends. This is the place to go for great food as well as entertainment.

Best French restaurant in Vancouver
Submitted Saturday, October 15, 2011 - 8:32am [Dine in]

Went here with my wife on a friday night for dinner. The place was very nice looking inside and our waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. On their menu they have $25 crushed ice mojitos that are topped up with champagne instead of soda so we had to try one and they were delicious!

Next was dinner.. We ordered the $75 per person chef's menu which came with 6 courses.
First was a foie gras creme brule spead that spread onto bread nicely and it was delicious.
Second was small french onion soup.
Third was a piece of sea bass on top of black linguine with mushrooms and sauce. The fish was cooked perfect and was excellent.
Fourth was steak that just melted in your mouth that had a little piece of lobster on top of it.
Fifth was a scoop of melon sorbet sitting in port wine. It was cantaloupe flavored and when mixed with the port wine it was perfect!
Sixth was a scoop of strawberry gelato sitting on some meringue and a small souffle, delicious.

After dinner my wife wanted to try another dessert that she saw someone else eating so we also ordered the chocolate mousse to share and that had a perfect cocoa taste. Everything we ate was delicious and there is really nothing bad I can say about this place. I tried to find some criticism to mention here but there really isn't any. Would come back here for sure on a special occasion when we feel like eating a perfect meal!

Good Pizza but...
Submitted Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - 8:39pm [Dine in]

Ok so I've had the pizza here a few times & it's great.. I would recommend the pizza. I've never dined inside however so finally I went to eat here with my father for dinner to try out some other menu items.

First impressions.. Place is nice, I don't like the open layout but nice place. Our server was very polite and friendly, service a little on the slower side (not her fault as she was the only server on the floor)
We ordered appies, my father had the caesar salad and said it was just average. I had the new zealand mussels in sauce. They were very big and tasty, sauce was good as well. Also I was thinking it was weird being in an italian restaurant with no bread on the table.. but after 10 minutes it came (was warming in the oven) so it was worth waiting.

Next we had our entrees. My father had veal parmigiana with potato and veggies. The portion was HUGE, two large pieces of veal, one would have been plenty so there were left overs. The meat was tough and overall not that good he said. I had the veal with mushrooms with pesto pasta on the side. The veal was a large portion and also tough. The sauce that it was in wasn't very good, kind of like a gravy. The pasta however was very nice.

Final thoughts...
Will order pizza from them in the future.
Will not return to dine-in.
The pasta and pasta sauce here are yummy.
Stay away from any veal dish here.

Had an excellent lunch here
Submitted Monday, August 29, 2011 - 1:19pm [Dine in]

The wife and I were walking down Alberni Street and decided to stop here for lunch and sit outside on the patio. We had just left a wedding and felt like some champagne. Lucky for us they offer it by the glass! Two glasses of champagne arrived. It wasn't cold enough for my liking but tasted great. We ordered off the brunch menu..
Appies were next, we ordered two to share. The Beef Carpaccio with soft gorgonzola polenta, asiago cheese - delicious! Also the Bruschetta Sampler - chick pea, tomato basil, pesto, burrata.. Very good.

After that we each had a pizza which were both good and a decent size. I had the Quattro Formaggio “Bianco” (4 white cheese) caciocavallo, fontina, asiago, mozzarella. This was tasty but only for cheese lovers! Very rich and I could only eat half. Would have been better if I added fresh tomato on it I think. My wife ordered the Tartufo Funghi - portobello mushroom, truffle cheese and it was good as well. The waitress asked if we wanted more champagne and I said I did but I wanted it to be ice cold. She smiled said no problem and our next glasses were chilled perfectly. At the end we had to take some pizza to go -) Overall we had great food and service and we will return!

I've driven by here countless times but never thought to try it out until a few people recommended the place. The wife and I went the other night. The outside looks a little old, the inside is nice and has a relaxing feel to it. We shared the saganaki, it was good but I've had better. I ate the arni psito (roast lamb) and the lamb was excellent. The rice and other stuff was just ok. We has a phyllo pastry kind of dessert and it was very good too. Overall it was a nice place, knowledgeable staff and my food was good. We would go back for a nice quiet dinner.

A good Italian Restaurant in Vancouver
Submitted Sunday, June 12, 2011 - 8:10am [Dine in]

I've heard mixed reviews of this place but I just had to try it out for myself. My wife & I ate there last night. We were seated in the garden (outdoor seating) at a table that was sitting on an weird angle. We asked if we could switch to one of the 2 tables beside us & it seemed like a bit of a chore for them, then the hostess who sat us said that they were both reserved.. ok no problem. During dinner an older couple sitting near by didn't like their seats, I guess the sun was in their eyes so they moved them to the table that we weren't allowed to sit at, hmmm weird!
ok ok on to the dinner now.. Appies, the wife ordered the seared ahi tuna & I ordered a softshell crab & avocado salad. Both were very good. For the entree's I had the lobster, mushroom agnolotti & my wife had the duck. She loved the duck! It looked a little dry to me but she was happy. My pasta was very good, fresh & delicate. For dessert we had the Pecorino cheese with pear & truffle honey. Yummy as well. Overall everything I consumed was great, even the bread was good! It's a little pricy but I would give this place another try in the future, the food was great & the restaurant is beautiful inside.

Nothing Special and no need to return
Submitted Sunday, April 24, 2011 - 12:13pm [Dine in]

Driving by, the restaurant name was quite catchy so I stopped in with my father to have lunch one day. My impressions of the place.. NIce looking inside & out, polite & professional staff. Menu is a little pricy but that's ok if the food matches the price. We split an appy, the calamari.. was ok. I ordered the risotto al barolo & the waiter suggested that I don't get that & that I should try the risotto ai funghi (mushroom risotto) instead. He said the one I ordered wasn't that good.. Why is it on the menu then?? So I tried a plate of both risotto's, half & half. He was right, the mushroom version was much better. My father ordered a simple italian dish, spaghetti with meat balls. He said he could have made it the same at home & he's no chef.. So after a $50 lunch for 2 I wasn't impressed with the food. It was ok but I've had much better for less price. When returning home I checked out the restaurant's website, nice site! Looked over their menu & noticed they had a bigger dinner menu to choose from so decided to give it one more try.

Round 2: I took the wife for dinner on a saturday night. Our server was very friendly, professional & knowledgeable. We shared a half litre of pinot grigio & she had the prosciutto wrapped chicken breast for $26. I had the Ossobuco with butternut squash risotto for $35. My dish once again was just ok, nothing special or memorable. In the end I decided that I will not return to this restaurant. The price is high but the food is average. I gave the food a 3 out of 5 but if there was an option for a 2.5 rating that is what it would have received.

Best bang for your buck sushi place in Burnaby
Submitted Sunday, April 17, 2011 - 12:36pm [Take-out]

My brother told me about this place. At first it didn't sound very good to me but I gave it a try & I've been going back ever since. This is the best bang for your buck sushi place I've ever been to! The place is kind of small & I've never eaten inside nor would I ever want to. I always get take out here. The food is great & the prices are greater. They have some good deals like the sushi combo, 18 pieces & miso soup for $6 taxes in. Or the teriyaki chicken bento box for $7 taxes in. You get 6 pieces on california roll, salad, chicken on top of rice & 2 pieces of nigiri sushi, 1 salmon, 1 tuna. This little place is always quick & easy, CHEAP and the food is great.
