Awesome wings, pho soup a bit oily.
Submitted Monday, December 9, 2013 - 3:55pm [Dine in]

Not bad for another pho place. Prices are on par with others in the area. Service is decent (same gentleman served us the two times we've been there). Newly opened so it still feels pretty clean. The appetizer deep fried chicken wings tastes really good. Nice and crisp batter with juicy wings and drumettes along with a generous side of plum dipping sauce. $4 Grilled subs are pretty good as well.

Only complaint is the oiliness of the pho soup. I'm not sure if all pho places are as oily like this and I just noticed it, or if it's just this restaurant. The oil in the soup that was spilt on the table and also left in your bowl after you finish the contents of the noodle soup actually solidified within the time span of our meal. It wasn't a very pleasant sight to see white lard spots forming on the table while we ate.

Will return for the yummy wings though.

Great tasting desserts, o-k service and everything else

Judging from the previous reviews, I guess I went on a good day because it wasn't TOO busy and there was ONE friendly girl that helped me out there. I knew about the weird ordering system from other reviewers so I was prepared for it, and found that indeed, it was kind of awkward and inefficient.

It wasn't a busy day when I went (no lineups), though the place was small and I was lucky to find one empty table. It was my first time there so I naturally hung around the counter checking out each piece of dessert longer than usual customers. There was this REALLY impatient lady with attitude there at first, and I'm guessing that was what other reviewers were referring to when they got bad service. She asked whether we were ready to order and when I said no I'm still looking, she gave me such an impatient look and kept looking behind me to see if I was getting in the way of other people that might be ready (which there was not because I knew I would take longer to decide so I was keeping an eye out for other people behind me). I also noticed that there were a few desserts sold out but the name signs were still up and they sounded really delicious. So I asked the same lady whether they were making more or had some ready to come out and she answered 'No they're sold out' quite abruptly. She made it sound like I was stupid for not noticing the missing cakes behind the sign. If your dessert is sold out then don't leave the signs out! Or at least have a "sold out" sticker or something. I work in customer service and if something is sold out, I would never just rudely say NO we have no more. I know I'm new at this but isn't that the reason why you should be nicer to me so I'd come back?

Anyway, she figured we was probably wasting her time so when we finally decided what to order, another girl was there to help us out. This time, she was friendly and actually SMILED. Wow, it was the first smile I saw from the staff since I came in. I ordered, I sat down like she told me to, literally 5 seconds later she called me back up to get my desserts and coffee and to pay. Behold! The weird ordering system!

I ordered the Lemon cheesecake and Raspberry Chocolate Hazelnut desserts and they were REALLY good. I don't understand why the chocolates were so expensive, but then again I haven't tried them yet (and probably wouldn't pay to try them - 3+ bucks a pop are you kidding me?). It would be nice if the shop was a bit bigger so it wouldn't feel like a regular tiny Starbucks with dirty tables and napkins on the floor. Felt a little too cramped in there for the delicacies they were serving.

Too bad Thomas Haas is only opened in Vancouver. I live in Coquitlam and the closest thing to this is Cumparis across Lougheed town centre and that place is terrible and over-priced. Overall, I probably wouldn't mind coming back here, as long as I'm in the area.

Acacia Fillo Bar & Cafe1103 Denman Street, Vancouver
Favourite place on Denman!
Submitted Monday, January 23, 2012 - 2:05am [Dine in]

Everytime I go to Denman I eat from this restaurant! I've always told myself I should try something new but once I'm there I'm craving their food so I don't end up being adventurous but who cares?

First time I ordered take out because the place was so small I thought it was take out only. But the visits after that I sat in, mostly because it was raining, but it's rather cozy inside as well.

I usually order the fillo, either duck and orange or the roast lamb and onions. Previous reviews seem to price this place lower than what it costs now, but that's just inflation probably. Though I was disappointed when I went today because they said they have to charge $4 extra for the duck now because duck has been expensive in the market lately (really?? Is that true?). So I got the lamb instead no problem it's still really good and filling for one person. I am absolutely in love with their yams that come on the side! I was even pig enough once to order an extra side of it for only a buck something. But I realized after it was plain gluttony and I couldn't finish haha. It usually comes with potatoes and yams mixed but you can get them with just yams instead (or just potato if you prefer, I'm guessing).

Their service is great as well. There's always a friendly girl helping you out at the register which is usually also the server. They answered a lot of my questions about the menu nicely during my first couple visits and gave suggestions to my liking (like the yam only option) when I wasn't sure what to do. Today's visit was no exception! I decided to order and pay/tip at the same time before I settled down to sit. The waitress knew I wanted the window seat from my conversation with my boyfriend but someone just came in the restaurant and took up those seats while I was paying. The waitress was kind enough to ask the new customer to sit somewhere else because I came first and wanted them. This might be something really simple or expected from a restaurant, but you'd be surprised how little people care elsewhere sometimes! Especially at small cafes such as this which seems take out oriented.

They also have this dessert freezer display case that makes me drool everytime I check out what's inside. But I never have enough room after the meal for them! I'm definitely trying dessert first next time!

NO service given unless you are Korean. Apparently no food given either this time.

The ratings for value and food are based on PREVIOUS visits where I actually received food. Service is and always will be horrible in this place but this time I didn't even get what I ordered. Literally nothing but tea and side dish on the table.

I visited this place on a Sunday afternoon with my boyfriend and we were pretty much the first table there for lunch. Therefore I assumed that service will be quick and we will receive our food orders first before other customers that come in after us.

First of all, the tea they gave was cold. This was still tolerable, though I wished I had at least warm tea served, but I thought I could just ask for a hotter pot.

Right after we sat down and started studying their crazy mess of special deals and combos pasted next to your table, people started pouring in. We decided to quickly flag down a waiter so we could place our order. After we did so, the waiter returned with our plates and ONE side dish. This, so far, was still reasonable. I've been here before with 3 people and we got 3 side dishes so I reasoned that less people would entitle us to less side dishes. WRONG. I noticed quickly that other parties of two received at least 3 side dishes. Fine, I'm patient and still thought this was tolerable since I could ASK for some more and reason with the waiter.

It eventually got busier and a large Korean family came in and sat near us, and later on another party consisting of Korean individuals sat behind them. Basically everyone around us has also ordered, and are starting to receive their food. Where was ours? The Korean tables practically got what they ordered immediately. Others around us eventually got their food as well and we were there long enough to have watched them order AND eat. Later on another group of koreans came and the same thing happened.

During this whole ordeal, we've asked the waiter a couple times for more tea, more side dishes, which never came. Hot tea, side dish refills, attention, service, food, everything ALWAYS went to the tables consisting of Koreans. We obviously got frustrated when everyone was eating and we were not and that was when the servers started to ignore us when we tried to call for them. My boyfriend managed to flag a waiter down and asked howcome everyone is eating already when we ordered and got here first? The waiter said 'just a moment' and ran off. When another waiter finally came with something that resembled our food, he placed it down and ASKED US if this was what we ordered. It was not. So I pointed onto the picture and said THAT is what we ordered. He got all pissed and took it away while the waiter that took our order yelled something in Korean which I assumed meant "that's not for them and it's not what they ordered".

We watched them serve food to several other tables and finally got fed up and left. We should have left a long time ago.

Service here has always been the worse I've ever been treated and now I wonder why I returned. Maybe for the portions I used to get for the price which is pretty much the ONLY good thing I can say about this restaurant. That is if you receive your food.

Minoas Greek Taverna3823 Kingsway, Burnaby
Kind of expensive and unfriendly waitress
Submitted Thursday, December 22, 2011 - 1:01am [Dine in]

We visited as a party of 9 and chose this place because it was the closest Greek restaurant to the majority of our group. We called before to make a reservation and asked if they charge a mandatory tip because of a larger party and they replied that there wasn't such an obligation (and was not written on the menu). However, when the bill arrived the waitress added onto the bill with a pen by hand a mandatory 15% tip and told us that because we had a large group that this was required. She crossed out the total on the printed bill and wrote the new total herself with a 15% tip. I thought that was a bit awkward.

We would have glady tipped properly anyway if the service wasn't so bad and plus, they had told us over the phone that there wasn't supposed to be a mandatory tip. As soon as we pulled out the entertainment coupon I could see the frown on the waitress' face as if they disliked their own promotions. She hardly checked on us at all and it wasn't even a busy night, it was a weeknight and there were 2 other tables to serve. She didn't smile at all and was not friendly.

I ordered the greek ribs and my boyfriend had the mousaka and calamari appetizer. The calamari was awfully small for its price. Overall, the entree portions were ok and the food was not horrible. We've had better taste elsewhere though, and for a lower price and bigger portions as well. This was rather expensive even with the entertainment coupon. I didn't think I got what I paid for even with the discount.

We will not be returning as we didn't really feel welcome by both the waitress and the owner (older lady always by the counter). The bus boy cleaning up tables was friendler than them.
