Disappointed
Submitted Saturday, January 29, 2011 - 3:35am [Dine in]

So after driving by this place many times since it opened, I decided to finally give it a try. My friends and I tried the Dine Out 2011 Menu.

For my appetizer, I ordered two chicken skewers with some kind of peanut sauce....that one dish took over an hour to come out! I was surprised at how long it took to cook two small chicken skewers! I could have cooked that myself on my BBQ! The chicken wasn't even marinated.

My main dish was the snapper with brown rice and veggies that consisted of string beans and red peppers. The snapper was suppose to be crispy, but came out soggy. The brown rice was just brown rice, no flavour. The veggies were quite disappointing....no butter or salt.....and no salt or pepper on the tables....I could have microwaved some Uncle Ben's Rice, grilled my own snapper and added some lemon to it....and made my veggies flavourful....my entree reminded me of the days at my high school cafeteria!

Dessert was okay, not the best...the pudding could have been more firm, it tasted like soggy melted jello or something.....

Overall, I was quite disappointed....our waitress was really slow and the restaurant wasn't even packed....even more surprised because the kitchen had really young cooks...I don't think they really cared about the "quality"....not even sure how such a packed restaurant full of staff could offer such slow service....you would think an Asian themed restaurant would be quick to serve out food...but this was the complete opposite.

If you are looking for a nice ambience, then this place would do...but don't expect fast efficient service or your food to come out within 30 minutes....I would recommend taking your money somewhere else for Dine Out.

P.S. If you want your hair and clothes to reek of oil and garlic smells, you have been warned...the ventilation system is horrible...my eyes even started getting dry and stingy because of the fumes!! Parking is a pain, you need to pay, even though they have their own lot in the back.

Full of MSG!
Submitted Sunday, November 14, 2010 - 5:45pm [Dine in]

I really like the BB tea here, but please don't order the food! I ordered the Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodle Soup, and the next morning I felt sick. I swear my soup was laced with tons and tons of MSG. If you google symptons of MSG poisoning, I had every single thing on the checklist! I'm Asian myself and I've ate Chinese food all my life, but never had I experienced this before! There were young teenagers cooking the food in the kitchen, so you can just imagine the experience....just add MSG to make everything taste better!

The service is really bad too! Good luck on getting the bill! There were at least 7 servers for a restaurant that sat less than 100, how can they give such slow service? I've worked in restaurants before, I'm just assuming they are plain lazy! And who let's their service staff wear UGGS and short skirts to work?! Seriously!

The bathroom is also cheaply decorated...no door handle for the ladies entrance washroom, you just push it? The inside door handle was a handle that is meant for the handicapp "handle" bars you find in a handicapp stall.

I would go somewhere else!

Gone downhill...

I dined here with my little sister. We liked it better when the place wasn't renovated. Ever since renovations, portions seem to be getting smaller and smaller. I've been there about 10 times ever since the renovations, but this will be my last time. The portions were not filling, and there wasn't much taste to the food. I wished I would have cooked some instant noodles at home instead! I'm not a big girl by any means, I'm pretty petite for my size, and a health nut, so to say the portions were small is no joke.

The prices have gone up too. I would not recommend coming here unless you have a dire craving for quick Chinese food and can't get it elsewhere. Save your money and eat at the many other places along Kingsway.

Horrible Experience
Submitted Monday, February 8, 2010 - 2:33pm [Dine in]

Walked in here on a Friday night after watching a movie at Metropolis...The place was new and looked pretty modern and inviting. However, our server did not understand English very well. My friend ordered a fresh taro slush, but they were sold out, so she ordered a taro coconut slush, instead they bought over a mango coconut slush 30 minutes later.

My second friend ordered grass jelly for her drink, but instead got cocnut jelly. The server gave us a stare, and bought it back to get it changed. How hard was it to change cocnut jelly to grass jelly? It was on the side anyways! It wasn't like they had to make a new drink.

Finally, for my drink, I ordered a honey lemon green tea HOT. First time around, they bought it to me COLD, the server said I heard you say "COLD", I said no, and my friends heard my order too. Second time around, she bought it to me HOT but with coconut jelly, I had made it very clear I wanted grass jelly on the side. The server said "I heard you say JELLY." I said "Yes, but I asked for grass jelly, you can't just assume I wanted coconut jelly." She told me that the owner was getting mad. I told her it's not my fault you keep screwing up the orders. She should be mad at you, not the customer. She said I had to have my drink the way it was, they refused to change it and just left the drink in front of me! Never in my life had I had to go through such a hassel just to get one bubble tea!

She semi apologized and offered us 20% off the bill. But what's the point? Why should I have to pay for a drink that I didn't order, it's like having to be forced fed peanuts when you're allergic to them! If she was a really good server, she would have repeated the orders back to us and corrected the order.

I would never visit this place again, and I don't recommend this place. It took them over 30 minutes to make 3 drinks and made a mistake on each of them! Please save yourself and visit another bubble tea place instead, there are plenty of awesome bubble tea places on Kingsway in the Burnaby area.

I would have to say the service is great, the decor is nice, but this clearly reflects on your bill! The portion size is okay, flavours are not bad, but $13 for a stir fry?! You are better off eating at Hons, at least you can take the leftovers for lunch, but at Noodle Box, I would say it's ovepriced.

I only come here for pickup/takeout orders and each time, all their staff greeted me with a smile. On Halloween, they even offered candy to their patrons and lots of it! That's what I call service and all the staff seemed very happy to be there. Portions are huge, and I recommend their party trays for potlucks, get togethers, birthdays etc...you can't beat the price, service and portion size!

Horrible Experience
Submitted Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - 9:45pm [Dine in]

I have tried HKYK before, and it now seems to be going downhill, it's a shame. I didn't have problems with them before until today.

From the beginning, the hostess never greeted us properly, never made eye contact, and didn't care who came in the door first. She just handed numbers to people whoever was pushing their way through, and I was clearly there before the crowd of people who rushed through.

I had a party of five, the dim sum ordering is through the pencil and paper method. After 30 minutes of trying to flag someone down to take our order, we had to take our own order to the cashier!

We spent 3 hours waiting for 12 plates of dim sum, I have never waited so long in my life for dim sum. The food was cold, dry, and full of msg. The only thing was they kept refilling our tea, but we found out later they CHARGE for tea. haha, what a joke. We asked for hot sauce 4 times, but it never came. The other patrons around us also waited just as long as we did, we all kept staring at one another to see if our food came!

In the end, we had to chase the waitress down for our bill, and they charged us extra for something that never came. This is the first time in my life I didn't leave a TIP!! Horrible food, horrible service, do not eat at this place, you would be lucky if your food came in less than 3 hours!!!
